Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

If there is an opportunity for change, what can we add or replace in this team to make it better?

An additional interior defender after June Mar retires. Let's hope QMB's eligibility is confirmed by FIBA, and work on exemptions for Mike Phillips and Ange.

Otherwise, I think we'll need a two-way NP at 4/5 after JB retires. 4, so that he can play alongside Kai, and 5, so that he can at least spell Kai in case AJ gets hurt in big windows.

Ray Parks now nearing on his final years of his prime... Better tap younger players for long term... Alec Stockton or Winston likely better option..

Stop your over-exaggeration. BRP Jr. is 31 years old. In his physical prime and he is already a Gilas vet. Has tons of reps guarding taller and world level players. Barring major injuries, his style of play makes him Gilas serviceable for at least the next 5 years. Even Chris Newsome was 31 years old in his first tour of duty for Gilas. And yeah, we get it that you're still hating on Bobby Ray's guts for ditching and ghosting your TNT.

About Stockton and Winston, I strongly agree that SBP must include them in the pool ASAP. They fit the template of Tim Cone's preference of guard play for his version of Gilas. Tall, good motor, hard-nosed defender and can score some if needed. Stockton, Winston, Heading and BRP Jr., just in case injuries hit anyone from Scottie, Newsome or Dwight.

Heading for CJ. Yes, I acknowledge that CJ is our most athletic guard out there and he also plays hard on defense. But up to this time he is erratic and I still can't see him creating opportunities for his teammates whenever he is on the floor. I would prefer Heading who can provide consistent threat from the perimeter, drawing out defenders and providing better spacing. His three point shooting is more beneficial for the triangle. Provides more space for the offense to drive, cut and post-up.

Obviously, Edu for Aguilar and Malonzo or QMB in lieu of Mason.

Excited on how well can Oftana, KQ and Tamayo plays on Sunday. Hoping that Coach Tim will give them and Mason at least 25 minutes of playing time.

Ray Parks does not defend like newsome.
He's the better offensive player for sure, but he is soft as hell on defense.

Ill get some flack for this but I think its time to maybe stop treating AJ Edu as part of the core group of 12, yes he is probably the best defender in the country but how many times has he been available for Gilas and is not sidelined by injury? Tim always says that this isn't Gilas' final form then till when shall we wait? Instead of just dancing around Edu's spot with Japeth perhaps its time we find a proper Edu replacement.

Yeah, Ray Parks is younger and taller than Chris Newsome...

What I like about Justin Brownlee is that, while he is a natural wingman (can play both the 3 & 2 spots), he has the upper body strength of a natural "four" or power forward. He's just so versatile.

not to mention his very long wingspan

It seems my my expectation of Edu’s unavailability came true. Hopefully QMB is really eligible. If not we might really need Kouame. Bennie is not much of a defender.

With Ange as NP, we will need a good shot creator when the offense breaks down.

With Bennie, we will need a good interior defender behind him or a solid perimeter defense in front of him. When Kai's not beside him, we will need our 1, 2, and 3 positions to be solid in preventing dribble penetration.

And Heading can stay in front of his man, he's not a defensive liability.

But I think he will replace Newsome (after New's retirement), not CJ. Newsome's closer to Gilas retirement.

Dunno about that as we’ve seen Bobby Ray as the designated import stopper of San Miguel in his ABL days. He went toe to toe with those ABL imports and the likes of Tyler Lamb. Though I will agree with you, Newsome is the tougher defender. BRP Jr. is just slightly taller/longer.

Did I hear it right from the New Zealand head coach describing Gilas as playing physical against his NZ team? I think that's very positive development. I really want our team to be very physical. Physical but not dirty. We would need such physicality against Middle East teams, NZ & Australia. We can also use such physicality to stymie finesse teams like Japan, Taiwan & even China.

I want that physical identity for our team as well. We pride ourselves and our brand of basketball on being physical, we just need to have that in FIBA, especially our national teams. Of course, not dirty, like you said, and not too much to put us in early foul trouble.

Agreed. That’s also why Tim Cone needs to find a better combo guard over CJ. Somebody who can replicate Newsome’s role.

Newnew was a hungrier defender, while ray is just putting minimal effort out there and just contending on getting his paycheck..

hope QMB will be considered to replace Fajardo. i think Fajardo will retire from gilas after this qualifiers.

yeah this is my biggest concern, passion for the game is probably not there anymore for ray after a couple of unfortunate circumstances.

I just stating facts.. many here agree that Parks is not we needed at this point... We need long term players, You said it Parks is 31 already, so how many years left for him to be serviceable? So better pick much younger players who can use for more than 5 years or more... And we all know CTC, he will not pick more players and he will stick to his current players even that he should expand it atleast 16 to 18 players in case that most of those players are not available ...
