Maybe an Andy Gemao with years of playing in US NCAA would be a good replacement. Same skillset, High flyer PGs, known for their defense, and good scorer if given the green light.

I can't see Newsome playing in the 2027 WC at age 37 - 38 yrs old anyway. This Asia Cup might be his last Gilas duty.

Let's see.. maybe if he can play on that level in next 2 years, he can be there too...

I think we are just going to get better from the retirement of JMF, JB.

The GOAT is just literally a backup to Kai right now (although they do play together in court, Kai looks like our main center already). Well, age does matter. QMB might be an upgrade if we are talking right now, obviously career-wise it is not even a debate. As per JB, as magical as he is, we can always find a caliber-import like he has, or maybe even better.

But like I said, it is Newsome who I don't have an idea whom can replace him.

When the time comes (once eligible) Chris Koon can be a good replacement for Newsome. Big guard at 6'5 can play the 1-2 position. Plays tough too

What is Schonny's official PBA measured height? I thought he is 6'3-6'4ish? He can't be shorter than Newsome who is 6'2.

Met the guy twice he's closer to the 6'0-6'1 range. As to why he was listed 6'4 at La Salle was maybe because of the afro that he was sporting back then

The pinoy nt actually played a bad game. They couldn't sustain and convert the 3rd qtr onslaught into a crushing win in the final qtr.

The lack of tuneup games against powerful top-20 national teams shows. But for a pitiful 5-day team practice, the result was okay. You can't argue against a win versus a decent, higher-ranked opponent.

Thats the purpose of New Zealand and Australia to give asian team top 25 level nt (even with their team b's).. especially if you get their competitive side..

I just hope Andy Gemao decides to play college ball in the US & will never entertain the thought of playing college ball in the Philippines. Sayang naman yung skills nya & his level of competitiveness which he has developed playing in the US & Canada lately.

Yes, i refuse to come with the low expectations typical of those raised and imprisoned in barangay mentality. Even within the limits of the 15-man pool, the pinoy nt should be +30 against nz. Well, there really are disappointments in life.

There really are enough pinoy bigs for 3 years. Heading and abando can replace the literal old guards after 2-3 years.

But the explosive locally born super-athletes required at the forward spots are missing. Paras and lopez are it, but only at the asian level. Baltazar and malonzo are also asian level only. Against the top 10-20 or so national teams, more powerful vampires are a must.

The batang gilas program can provide maybe 2 or 3 of those vampires. They have some intriguing players at the 13-16 level. But some young filfor forwards who are us ncaa division 1, and nba ready, will be most ready for short nt prep times.

Are my expectations unrealistically high? No. I am one of the few posters here who saw and knew that kai is way beyond the garbage typically spewed by high school teams. The only ones who can give him problems at 22 are in... the nba. Only old man fajardo can match his reliability against difficult odds.

2 cents, i thought Japeth on the very limited minutes he had played pretty well on defense. Not sure about Tim's apprehension on playing him more as he can switch better than Junemar, is he injured? Is Tim soured on him?

two things that need to improve on moving forward perimeter defense and transition defense

those areas was really a waterloo for us even during the previous games against that Oceania team

even though we can now compete in the 4 and 5 spot now with the possible entry of QMB next year

our 2 and 3 spots needs some fine tuning against the lengthy Tall Blacks and AUS

surely the laterals of JMF, Carl and Kai will be abuse most of the time esp. against there stretch bigs

in fairness to Kai I've noticed he is improving a lot on his permeter D and that's a good sign

esp. if AJ comes back being our best perimeter big guy and somehow hide JMF's weaknesses on that part

as for Carl, he is still a work in progress in that area and kudos to his club team by giving him the repetition

to play the perimeter and sometimes calling their play

hopefully by next Window games against the same team, we could see a much improve CT working on his perimeter D

as for our back court guys despite being schooled by that Webster guy thank goodness his younger bro. was not around

those bros. are really a torn for us since 2016, same narrative with the Bahrami bros. of that IRI golden years.

Scotty 2 Hotty are learning to be cerebral in the international level and the "Baby Beast" must also do his learning as well

despite not having the necessary length as per our expectation, being cerebral is very much important against those Oceanias.

that's one area that needs to be consistent on the part of the newly engage "New New" despite being physically conditioned last night

I've notice in most instances he is out smart by TW in some sequence, he tends to hold back esp. when he has an open lane to attack

we need more "dagger 3 point shot of an attitude" on the part of CN to somehow challenge that dreaded Webster defensively.

I do hope CTC will burn the likes of KQ, MA, CT to the max for the HK games

they badly needs all the necessary repetitions moving forward.

I think it is now evident that international teams have already pin pointed the glaring weakness of Gilas' defense when JMF is on the floor. During last night's game against NZL, they abused Junemar in the high screen pick and roll knowing he will drop down on the ball screen to defend the driving lanes but leave the roll player open for a pull up jump shot. At least with Sotto his length makes up for that distance but imagine against higher level teams, JMF would be a walking liability for Gilas in defense. And so with this in mind I think the importance of enlisting mobile big men (Edu, Phillips and QMB) who can defend the perimeter should be something that GIlas management should put their focus on

And I think with the win against NZL I wouldnt be surprised if they let Brownlee rest and activate Koaume for the game against HK this sunday.

If there is an opportunity for change, what can we add or replace in this team to make it better?

IMO, I don't think we need CJ Perez at this time; I would replace him with Jordan Heading. There were moments in the game last night when his defender wasn't sticking with him in the 3-point area. Had it been Jordan Heading, it's likely that shot would have been a converted three with that much space. CJ Perez is not a strong shooter, which is why he doesn't take those chances from beyond the arc.

Other than that, no changes are necessary. We all know that Japeth and Mason are there due to AJ and Jamie's absence.

However, we might need changes in the next 2-3 years. JMF, Newsome, and JB are 35, 34, and 37 years old, respectively. By the 2027 World Cup, they will all be three years older.

That's when QMB enters the picture for JMF. As for JB, we can always find a naturalized player of his caliber—or better. The only thing that could hold that up is the slow process of citizenship here. As for Newsome, I’d take a bet on a 21-year-old Andy Gemao, if he somehow manages to get into the USNCAA and have some experience.
