I always want to look at our national team rosters since 2000. I tried to form a team that can win gold in FIBA-Asia. After looking back, these are the players that I think that can win the us gold:

Guards:

- Jimmy Alapag
- Jason Castro
- Mark Caguioa
- Cyrus Baguio
- Chris Newsome

Forwards:

- Dwight Ramos
- Gabe Norwood
- RDO
- Marc Pingris
- Kelly Williams

Bigs:

- Andray Blatche
- Kai Sotto/AJ Edu

I picked Cyrus Baguio for a very good reason. Per Seigle, I doubt if he can translate his game in international. Pingris was already proven. He and RDO gave the intangibles during their Gilas runs.

Well, Carl Tamayo is more like a facing-the-basket type of a "four" which is the skill set of most fours in modern day basketball.

I think Carl's a bit of both, actually. He can play with his back to the basket, and while facing the basket.

I picked Cyrus Baguio for a very good reason. Per Seigle, I doubt if he can translate his game in international. Pingris was already proven. He and RDO gave the intangibles during their Gilas runs.

Danny Seigle was the Phi team's most consistent scorer in the Selecta-Euro Cup in 2002 where the RP-Selecta team played the national teams of Latvia, Italy & Ukraine as part of our team's preparation for the 2003 Busan Asian Games. Unfortunately for Seigle, he injured his Achilles Heel in RP team's last tune up game prior to the 2002 Asian Games.

The thing about Seigle is that at 6-foot-6, he's the tallest natural small forward to have ever played in the PBA prior to Gabe Norwood. I say natural small forward kasi yung iba na yan eh more of a tweener or a combo forward. I remember he is being called a walking mismatch in the PBA during his time becoz if you put a 6-foot-2/6-foot-3 defender on him, he will just overpower or shot over such small defender. If you put a 6-foot-5/6-foot-6 defender on him, chances are such big defender won't be able to keep in step with him.

I honestly think, if Seigle wasn't injured during the 2002 Asian Games, RP team would have beaten South Korea in the semis & that wus have been a sure silver medal for us. I think no Korean player can guard him at that time.

The key to our success in the next 10 years is Kouame's exemption. Him being classified as a local will give the Gilas coach a wider range of choice for naturalized players, making Gilas more versatile.

An exemption of Kouame or QMB (both will be better) will definitely solve our frontline woes in the next 10 years.

​Agree with the bigman exemption takes. Mike, Ange, and maybe QMB provide backup and future options in the interior defense department, which frankly, we have in short supply (which is why we keep calling up Japeth, and a big reason why I think the next first-choice NP should be, at the minimum, a decent interior defender in case AJ gets hurt, and a 4 who can play alongside Kai).

And like sir live_evil said, exemption for Ange (which I will extend to Mike, and maybe QMB) widens our options for naturalized players. We won't have to worry about interior defense as much, so we can pick a more offensive-minded player, even if he has weaknesses on defense (like JC and Bennie).

I just feel Baguio's impressive performance with the RP team in the 2009 FIBA Asia Championship was just small a sample size to really assess a player's performance in the FIBA game & other international competition.

Wasn't CJ Perez so impressive playing for Gilas in the 2019 FIBA World Cup? But in the succeeding FIBA or international competitions, he has his share of struggles. But I think overall, CJ Perez is really a vital component of Gilas.

Would Cyrus Baguio be that impressive had he played for the RP team for 2 more FIBA Asia tournaments or other international competitions?

Because he was no longer called up after that since we went Gilas-route. We went amateur after 2009 with PBA players, mostly from TNT, serves as reinforcements. A prime Cyrus Baguio will be a staple to dribble drive of Chot.

Makes me wonder why Baguio wasn't in the RP team pool of coach Chot Reyes in the 2007 FIBA Asia Championship? Baguio was already 27 at that time so he was already at the peak of his career. 2006-07 season was not his peak although he was on his way up. 2007-08, the season after our dismal finish in FIBA-Asia, was his breakout season.

Picking Dondon, MC, Renren and James over him during the 2006-07 season was obvious - those 4 were already the more established players in 2006. The players for SMC-Pilipinas were selected around January or February in 2007.

Now, had Chot handled our national team in 2009, Cyrus will be surely picked.

Maybe Big Game James needed more FIBA or international games for him to really get comfortable with it. But for me, Yap's downside is his defense. When compared to the likes of Hontiveros, Lassiter & Newsome in terms of defensive skills, Yap is obviously inferior.

Also, Yap is a volume shooter in which in a national team set up in which madami ang scorers, such characteristic by a player won't be good for the team.

Hontiveros, lassiter and caguioa. DH and marcio are good 2 way players..

Maybe Big Game James needed more FIBA or international games for him to really get comfortable with it. But for me, Yap's downside is his defense. When compared to the likes of Hontiveros, Lassiter & Newsome in terms of defensive skills, Yap is obviously inferior.

That's actually part of the rationale as to why I don't think it would be wise to add a guy like Arvin Tolentino to the Gilas pool right now. He's a volume scorer. I dunno how he would perform with lower volume. Another big part is that his defense isn't the best, especially in a position (the wing) where I think defense should be a priority.

Speaking of Caguioa, I think in our 2007 RP team, he & Danny Seigle were the team's go-to-guys. It was just unfortunate that Seigle was always stymied by injuries at that time. Caguioa can deliver 15 to 20 pts in a game for the RP team during that time. At walang kahirap-hirap para sa kanya yun eh.

Caguioa's downside is his tendency to freelance at times which would be detrimental to the team.

I feel Oftana & Malonzo can do a better job on defense at the 3 spot than Arvin Tolentino.
