It sucks as fuck when a team coached by CCR, who still uses the DDO is dominating a system-oriented team coach by the current NT coach. As much as I want Ginebra to have their revenge, this better be done in 4-5 games for Gilas.
Actually nga, TNT did it through defense. Denied Brownlee passing lanes and clean looks. That's the real surprise from Chot, the defensive-oriented identity of TNT. In the past, defense isn't the first thing to come to mind when discussing Chot Reyes in recent years.
Couple that with Chot using actual small ball, using RHJ at the 4, which hasn't changed.
It got me thinking nga, e. What if Chot were this focused on defense and used a more versatile small ball lineup with Gilas, one where he doesn't sacrifice size and defense at the wing?

But I think in the Asian level, Gilas can compete without Brownlee. I remember in a window qualifier of 2023 World Cup, Gilas beat Jordan. Jordan had Dar Tucker as its naturalized player while Gilas had Ange Kouame as its naturalized player. I think Kouame's equivalent player in terms of skills & quality is somewhat that of an AJ Edu. Both players not really high scorers but are effective role players.
Also in 2021 Gilas made up of amateur then amateur players (Kai, Dwight Ramos, Tamayo, Baltazar, Navarro, Belangel, RJ Abarrientos) with Ange Kouame as its naturalized player (Kouame an amateur player back then), & Tab Baldwin as its coach beat a South Korea national team with Ricardo Rattlife as its naturalized player. Gilas beat the Koreans not only once but twice.

In 2017-18, that was the case. No real small ball threats, and not many tall wings who are as good as Gabe.
In 2022-23, he used Malonzo as a small ball 4. I think Dwight (who also saw time at 4) and JC were the only players measuring at least 6'4" that Chot put at the 3. Heck, Oftana had limited playing time too, and Will Navarro wasn't recalled after the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup.

This is my same testament why Gilas beat Jordan in Asian games finals.. Gilas is still atleast top 8 in Asia w/o Brownlee but if you pull out RHJ or any import of Jordan, they are lower than Indonesia or KSA… our locals are good compare to Jordan… if RHJ is still available, I would love to have him as our naturalized player.. he can fit on every single player on the court…

Wala kang itulak kabigin sa mga yun. Eh wala pa nga sa team sina Jordan Heading, Rhenz Abando, William Navarro, Justin Baltazar, Schonny Winston. Those guys I think are serviceable for Gilas especially in the Asian level.
I think in a window qualifier where you got to play only 2 games per window, a shallow bench would still be ok. But in a tournament format where teams get to play 5 to 7 games, bench depth is going to matter a lot.

Korea is definitely on the rise, though many might not sense it yet. They have Yeo Jun Seok, who’s now playing for Gonzaga in the US NCAA, and Hyunjung Lee, currently competing in the NBL. While Gilas managed to beat both of them in those bubble games, they’ve built impressive credentials since. Korea even managed to take a game off Japan’s pre-Olympic team, which was in training for the Paris Olympics.

As far as I can see, Japan, PH, Jordan, Lebanon, China, Korea, and Iran will all remain competitive for the next decade just as they always had since the 00s. The basketball tradition, talent, and infrastructure are already strong.
Australia and NZ will always be up there competing. They are like the Team USA and Canada of FIBA Asia. The former being the indestructible juggernaut and the latter being the so-so juggernaut depending on their roster composition.
For as much as they’ve shown improvements over the decade, the likes of KSA, Kazakhstan, Syria, India, Qatar, and Bahrain aren’t quite there yet. It remains to be seen how they remain consistent in this decade.

NZ should scour for all available talents against Golden Generation Gilas. NZ fanboys here should tell all of NZ bball to bring the best of NZ. They seem to have their supposed excuses prior to the game. In any case, Golden Gen Gilas will be really formidable against NZ even with Adams.

With gilas coming in as big, if not bigger than nz, our nt's chances are quite good, as nz players are not exceptionally skilled over the pinoys. Only china and australia can come in bigger. But only aus is both bigger and more skilled as benchmarked against nba players. Japan is getting big too and has nba-experienced players. However, their nba players are of pba class quality only. I dont see much promise in west asian teams like iran, jordan and lebanon, unless they are playing in their home court. Half of gilas players are used to playing in foreign leagues, so they can considerably reduce the advantages of opponents playing in their home turf.

"The proof of the pudding is in the eating" as they say. We have yet to beat New Zealand. I don't know how many times Gilas had played NZ since Australia & NZ were integrated to FIBA Asia. All I know is that we lost all our games versus the Tall Blacks. May mga games pa nga na tinambakan tayo ng New Zealand. Even a well prepared PBA-select Gilas team with Dray Blatche couldn't beat New Zealand in the 2016 Olympic Qualifying Tournament. That was a NZ team without Steven Adams.
That is why ganoon na lamang ka excited tayong mga fans in the upcoming Gilas-New Zealand encounter on Nov. 21. We are so eager to beat New Zealand.

What happened to Amos? I dont see him playing that much with the La Salle team. I have doubts on whether he is the right person to be in Gilas. Amos, to me, is like Isaac Go. Maybe Isaac Go is better.

His slow laterals in defense concerns me. Good that I heard he has somewhat trimmed himself recently. He was bloated when he played for Ateneo.
He was very impressive playing for Batang Gilas U-18 in 2022.
