Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Thais need to upgrade their roster size wise... And I think if they naturalized, they need a role player type of big man.. not a ball dominant guy because Lish and Lamb are already ball dominant players... They just lose to Hamooda less Bahrain team last Asian games...

They need a rim protector to complement Jakrawan.

Chanatip, size-wise, is more of a PF and you can't rely on him to protect the rim.

Positions 1-3: they are okay if the opposition is only Gulf teams but against top Asian teams? Definitely not.

He is like rookie year Troy Rosario... We all know how inconsistent Troy when he plays in FIBA...

Schonny Winston is ready for Gilas i think

How does Winston compare to Iskati Thompson?

I think both are good defenders. But I think Winston is slightly better in offense, his mid-range pull-up jumper is his money move/shot.
But the good thing about Iskati is that nag e improve na rin yung 3-pt shot nya.
I hope in about 2 yrs time, Winston will be integrated to Gilas. Winston is around 4 yrs younger than Iskati so around 4 yrs from now, Iskati is expected to be on the twilight of his career so by that time Winston wud be in the peak of his career.

But honest, it wud be better if Winston gets integrated to Gilas now so that 3 to 4 yrs from now, maganda na experience nya in the FIBA game.

With Newsome aging (he's currently 34), it would be nice to have another guard who can D up.

And Schonny's already 26. Might as well start as soon as Newsome retires.

puno would’ve been nice for gilas.. too bad he’s ineligible though hope in the future he can get a newsome treatment

Yeah. A potential two-way wing.

We really need a defensive wing after JB retires from the NT.

Anyone know where I can a full game vid of the Asiad 2023 finals?

Can’t find it on YouTube.

Despite winning all their games so far I'm still disappointed at the development (or lack thereof) of Francis Lopez. He's at best 6'4 so the SG-SF are his best positions for Gilas and yet he has no handles beyond 2 dribbles, lacks the fluidity as a wing and just physically more mature against younger opponents in UAAP.
I always thought that when he played against/with players on a higher level (Gilas stint) he'll have the awareness on what to do to get even better. And that's not the case for Lopez at all.

For seagames maybe... Need to evaluate him there before tapping for main seniors team... Is he eligible, right?

Even if for instance Winston plays well with Gilas in the SEA Games, I won't be that convinced that he's ready for the Asia & world level basketball. As I've said many times, SEA basketball is such a low level competition with only Indonesia as a decent opponent. Thailand may look competitive but its games in last year's Asian Games & Asia Cup qualifying windows say otherwise.

This also applies to all Gilas aspirants that not becoz maganda performance mo sa SEA Games eh you're ready for the Asian level moreso world level basketball. I say a Gilas player's performance against teams in the Persian Gulf region - Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, would be the better gauge of a certain player whether or not he is ready for the Asian or world level basketball.

not even sure if hes a capable import in B League and Korean League.

There's 2 types of nba slam dunk champions...either they're no names or they are really really good (especially in years past when the very best joined). Not a lot in between.

For international purposes, Lopez is headed for the former.

It's the curse of being bigger, faster, stronger and more athletic than everyone at a young age. You never have the need to develop in other aspects of the game. His aborted move to the US was very bad for his development, he would have been forced to work more on his skills.

they've seen him up close and im sure they're not impress. Another Kobe Paras, buti na lng wala pa showbiz option si Lopez

He would be a good Jamie Malonzo replacement if he can work on his handles and develop an outside shot.

No doubt he's still very young and could develop those esp the outside shot. But I was hoping he'd be alot better now since Gilas 2021.
So for the wing it'll just be Oftana, Jaime, KQ and for 2 years max Brownlee.
I wnder how much it would take for the eligibilities of Philipps, Lucero, QMB and Koon. If we could have those Im Okay getting Barefield as a Naturalized player. Unpopular take but should cost much less
Kai, QMB, Edu, Philipps, Tamayo, KQ,Jaime, Oftana, Ramos,Koon, Winston & Barefield should be good enough

I think we need a wing who can defend the perimeter and prevent dribble penetration, especially after JB retires. That is, unless we can have Mike Phillips and QMB exempted.

Like I said, if we could have those (QMB, Philipps, Lucero & Koon) then Im Okay for Barefield as a NP.
Plus replacing the quality of JB is beyond tough, we got really lucky w/ JB, they call him MJ of PH but he's really our Lebron as he does everything; defend, rebound, as a playmaker and takes the biggest most pressured shots for Gilas. That's a tough ask, we'll never see another NP w/ that kind of talent and humility. JB is 1 of 1.
