Brownlee taken out of the game with NLEX due to injury

update,
said it was cramps

It's just cramps which would sideline Brownlee for a few days to at most a week depending on how bad the cramps is. It may jeopardize Ginebra quarterfinal game though.

The 3 needs to be a bit taller and stockier in the world level. You can have a 6’5 guy but should be beefy like Dwight. I agree Belmonte’s body type fits more a 2. He’s like a taller Abando. But he needs to work a lot on his shooting.

He's longer/taller than locals we've been using as 3s and body type/strength can be improved (not to mention he's still young). Skills and natural instincts is why I'm pegging him at 3. Wingspan (which he has) is more important in perimeter defenders than height, They have to cover space laterally.

His teammate Bayla is the natural 2 when it comes to instincts, skills and physical profile.

Cramps even at his age should only take a few hours.

To be realistic, I'm hoping that Gilas will have 6-foot-3/6-foot-4 natural shooting guards some 5 to 6 years from now. Of course I'm hoping that 6-3/6-4 natural 2-guards will proliferate in Philippine basketball. I think expecting 6-foot-5/6-foot-6 natural shooting guards to proliferate in Philippine basketball in 5 to 6 years time would be unrealistic.

Right now, it is 6-foot-5/6-foot-6 small forwards who are proliferating in Philippine basketball.

Yah, proliferation isn't happening soon. For this to happen, we would need to have really tall centers (FSAs) in the youth stages (HS and younger).

Bayla who is our closest to a 6'5 natural SG, grew up in the US (same thing with similarly developing prospects like Morales and hafus).

Either that or someone growing up short and playing as a guard and then getting a late big growth spurt. Unfortunately, most of the time we don't grow like that (we usually grow early and in increments).

The next option is to train all young players perimeter skills (which has been happening). Unfortunately, even if our tall players have the skills, they are only able to use it when they reach situations like in UP and DLSU. Even KQ had to be a big man growing up.

Hope Bayla would be the next 6-foot-4 or above natural shooting guard to join another 6-foot-4 natural shooting guard in Dwight Ramos who is already considered a veteran Gilas player (4 years being a Gilas member). Perhaps that will happen 4 to 5 years from now, depending on how fast Bayla's development would be. Bayla really has to develop his ball handling, shooting & defense to make it to Gilas senior team. Right now, his upsides are his athleticism & size.

At 18, he's already starting and contributing in a stacked UP in the uaap where there are a lot of guys near their mid-20s. He's definitely ahead of schedule compared to homegrowns.

His guard skills are ahead for his age and size, and his defensive effort is what's giving him playing time compared to other young filams. He just needs more experience and hopefully he keeps playing at higher levels.

I actually saw lineups with three perimeter players at 3-4-5 in the NCAA.

Lyceum: 6'4" Jonathan Daileg-6'3" Gyle Montano (who looks to have a combo guard's skillset)-6'2" John Barba
Perps: 6'2" Christian Pagaran-6'4" JP Boral-6'4" Angelo Gelsano

Problem is, the height range in those lineups is between 6'2" to 6'4". Would be better if the ranges are 6'4"-6'7", and 6'4" guys can play the 2 as well as the 3.

Nice to see AJ Edu back playing for his new B-league team Nagasaki Velca (Jordan Heading's former team) in the Emperor's Cup which serves as the B-league's pre season tournament. Despite those injuries he had suffered in his young career, Edu remains quick, agile, mobile & athletic as ever.

I can't help but be excited on the trio of Kai Sotto, Junmar Fajardo & AJ Edu at the center position with Gilas in the coming 2nd window of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup qualifier this November. That would be a formidable frontline.

emperor’s cup is japan’s version of FA cup not a pre season tournament..

Would guys still consider Japeth to be part of Gilas if he continues his stellar offensive plays this year? I don't know what happened to him, maybe fatherhood, but his offensive game has been phenomenal this comm cup. Unfortunately, it took him almost 15 years to have this kind of a season. Could have been the face of Ph basketball and our version of KG/TD/CB.
It's Japeth's defensive contribution that's needed, since we're short on defensive bigs bar AJ, Kai, and Ange (who's an NP). Japeth's still good defensively. He doesn't have a lot of time, though. In fact, he had already retired, but Cone just called him up as a reserve.

no need for japs.. aj edu will take that spot.. japs is just a place holder for edu..

Yep, size matters. A 6'2 Anthony Davis (before his growth spurt) wasn't anyone special.

There's plenty of barangay teams that can have 1-5 lineups where all players have guard skills, the catch...they're all about 5'8.

Conditions in our country make it difficult for 6'4 and above guys to be natural guards.

Since we probably will have AJ Edu in the November window (I hope I won't jinx him), we won't be needing Japeth anymore in Gilas jersey. Japeth was just a "band-aid" solution last February window becoz we didn't have Edu at that time. Its time we move forward by picking players who are going to be serviceable for Gilas in at least 2 years time instead of players who are just mere "band-aids".

We will need to get good defensive bigs. In the pool, only Kai (who has improved on D) and AJ are decent in the defensive bigs department. Carl has a ways to go, and he's probably a system defender at best. Best candidates I can find so far are Kemark Carino and maybe Clifford Jopia.

If we can't find a defensive big, we need a good defensive wing like Will Navarro or even guys like Jacob Bayla so that we don't allow easy penetration whenever we have a lineup that has neither Kai nor AJ on the floor. In the pool, Dwight and JB are the only wings that have shown to be able to guard their man. I don't know if Oftana and Malonzo can stop dribble penetration on their own, although they can rotate when needed. Whenever Oftana, Malonzo, or Quiambao is the 3, I think we'll need Kai and/or AJ on the floor.

Those are the two holes I'm seeing on defense. An extra defensive big and/or wing in case neither Kai nor AJ are on the floor. Yes, we'll defend on scheme, but we need the personnel. Otherwise, easy baskets for the opponent.

Kenmark should be fast tracked somewhere, just poach him already SMB/Ginebra. a waste on Terrafirma right now

SBP should move heaven and earth to make QMB local. A young frontline of Kai, Edu, QMB and Tamayo is servieable for at least 10 years.
