Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

That's the 1990-1997 bracket if we're using this year. I don't think a lot are qualified so far.

1995: Arvin
1996: Heading, Boatwright (NP)
1997: Navarro, Ange (NP)

All I can think of.

There’s also Tuffin.

plus the guys below 27 will be in that age bracket by the time the WCQ starts in Q4 2025.

if hes eligible, stockton is inviting a bleague stint with his play

With the way Stockton has been playing so far in the Governor's Cup & even from last year, he really deserves a Gilas call up. That is of course if he is FIBA eligible which has been the multi-million dollar question in this forum lately. Of course it remains to be seen if he's able to carryover his PBA offensive game to the FIBA game or the international game. Eh kaya nga he needs to be tested in the FIBA or international game. Too bad that coach Tim has no plan to expand the current Gilas pool & as of now we don't have a cadet/developmental pool. Maybe we'll have to wait 3 to 4 years from now before we'll see Stockton (that is if he's FIBA eligible) & Schonny Winston (I think we have not yet seen his true potential) in Gilas jersey.

What about the following PBA players who are currently in their mid-20's:

Schonny Winston (I think he's FIBA eligible)
Alec Stockton (if he is FIBA-eligible)
CJ Cansino (showing some signs of promise & he's barely 25 years old so he is still developing)
RJ Abarrientos (though his weakness on the defensive end is a significant downside)
Jonel Policarpio (a 6-foot-4/6-foot-5 natural small forward. I think he's only 23 or 24)

Thanks for adding Tuffin. Forgot about him again.

So, adding the 1998-2000 guys (the players who turn 27 over the World Cup qualifiers), here:

1998 (27 in 2025): Schonny, Carino, Javi
1999 (27 in 2026): Mamuyac, SJ, RJ

Can't think of a guy born in 2000 other than Dave and AJ. AJ's already in the team.

Lazaro has played a lot of 4 for Ateneo, though. That's his primary position there.

I have seen the midrange jumper, last year or the year before. Good touch from there. Hope Ateneo gets the players to enable him to play more 3.

4 and 5 (sometimes against FSAs) but because of necessity though. On switches, he's shown the ability to defend 1 to 5. A plus for him is his rebounding, which translates to higher levels well.

I'm not sure if Koon is born 2000 or 2001. I believe he got his passport at 16. Another 6'5 guard who can defend, handle and shoot.

Is Baltazar out of the radar? He's as tall as Carino (6'6.5"). Can play 4 especially in Asian setting.

Baltazar is obviously being left out by SMC/SBP. Come to think of it, Baltazar & Carl Tamayo are the best natural fours in Philippine basketball right now, Tamayo is easily in the current Gilas pool of coach Tim but Balti isn't.

I think Baltazar's case is similar to Robert Bolick. Obviously Bolick deserves to be in the Gilas team/pool. I think he is even better than Iskati Thompson in the point guard position, yet he is being left out.

So that's after his 16th birthday which won't make him FIBA-eligible, unless of course he gets an exemption.

Sir Jams,

I think same case with Remy Martin who obtained there respective docs a few months(?) after their 16th birthday

CK has a strong chance to get exempted quickly because of his strong domestic connection alongside Kai Ballunggay and Mike Philips

unless RM decided to join any domestic leagues anytime soon to fasten the process of his exemption.

the bottomline is, does the SBP are interested enough to send a formal request to FIBA moving forward

Jason Perkins also had a strong chance as well "matagal na dapat" but unfortunately they are not interested(?)

it ain't wise to send a formal request to a 30-plus yr. old prospects, unless they are eager to do that

and include Stephen Holt and soon to be draftee DJ Fenner whose also in their 30's.

Stockton is a tantalizing prospect. I would wait for the playoffs but the height and defense are a sore need. That and CTC prefers tall PGs.

he is def a prototypical Cone PG, he'll id say hes a more offensive oriented scotty thompson thats taller.

Stockton's 3pt shooting is better than Iskati. I agree with Sikatrix, we need to see how Stockton plays in the playoffs & perhaps in the semis if ever Converge goes that far (which I doubt) to be able to really assess Stockton's potential. Nag iiba kasi ang level ng competition during the playoffs, semis & moreso in the finals.

Guys, who do U think are Gilas potential 2-guard or shooting guards that will replace Chris Newsome & CJ Perez a few years from now? It doesn't look like we have promising prospects as of now.

What do U think is the potential of CJ Cansino to be that player?

About 3 to 4 years ago, I thought Dave Ildefonso has the potential to be a Gilas quality prospect at the 2-guard spot. And he looked promising back then especially since he is around 6-foot-3/6-foot-4. Buy judging from his performance in the KBL, he doesn't look like that promising. He seemes to have stagnated in South Korea.

Mark Belmonte :-)
Schonny Winston
Nic Cabanero
and yes Thirdy Ravena

What's on Stockton's debate here? Is he really that good? He's too raw for discussion here... His decision making is not yet develop, Too much foul proned guy.. let him develop first in PBA before having conversations with him.. he's not yet on the level of current, past prime Jayson Castro's of all people...
