Well, we have more choices now as far as good size small forwards are concerned. Gone are the days when we had 6-foot-2 & 6-foot-3 small forwards in the national like Allan Caidic, Vergel Meneses, Kenneth Duremdes, Dondon Hontiveros, Marcio Lassiter, Chris Lutz.

As brilliant a college player JD Cagulangan is, I don't think he has a high ceiling as a potential national team point guard mainly becoz of his height. At 5-foot-9, he is simply an undersized point guard at the FIBA level. Plus he isn't that quick nor athletic. He is not a pass-first point guard as well. He's no Johnny Abarrientos nor a Jayson Castro in terms of speed & athleticism.

Schonny Winston and Stockton are better alternatives than Cagulangan, baka for PBA level only..

Off topic? but I was watching the 2011FIBA asia bronze game Gilas vs SK...We've come a long way, we had Barocca,Casio, Tiu and Alapag with Lassiter and Lutz as our 3 guys...defensively we had no chance(backcourt)!
politics did it as well, we could've had Dillinger &Norwood. But it was a necessary phase (growing pains) for us

We'll never know bro unless they are tested playing for Gilas in Asian level basketball.

We actually have a No. of national team players whom prior to their stints with the national team, a lot of people doubted of their usefulness. I remember not too many fans were convinced that Calvin Abueva would be serviceable for Gilas in 2015 becoz he is an undersized small forward whose outside shooting is suspect. Abueva proved us wrong. Some people doubted Paul Lee for Gilas in 2014 becoz he's slow & unathletic. Likewise people also doubted Mark Pingris' usefulness to Gilas becoz he was an undersized big man without any outside or even mid-range game.

Yet both Paul Lee & Pingris proved us wrong.

Of course there are also a No. of national team players who didn't live up to most people's expectations - Garry David, Danny Ildefonso, Arwind Santos.

Calvin Oftana isn't living up to most people's expectation, so far. But I'm hoping Oftana will startt to find his groove in his next stint with Gilas.

I think Schonny and Stockton can translate, at least on the defensive end. They're quick enough to stay in front of guards, and they show good effort, Stockton moreso. It's the shooting that we need to see first.

Although, of the two, I think only Schonny is known to be eligible.

Oftana needs consistent decent outings, maybe at least shoot 35% across the next two windows. He's a good team defender, but his shooting hasn't been the most consistent lately. In addition, his man defense took a massive step back in the past PBA season. Got blown by more easily. I dunno if he recovered, though. I hope his man defense improves, because we will need that from his position.

Defense & ability to orchestrate are for me Stockton & Winton's most significant characteristics that might make them Gilas prospects. I think compared to CJ Perez & Chris Newsome, Winston & Stockton have better playmaking skills.

Agree with U. We still have to see if Stockton & Winston can carryover the shooting or scoring that they are demonstrating in the PBA to the FIBA game or the international game. That's what we want to find out.

For some reason I always thought Stockton was a homegrown. Maybe because his athleticism and skills were not at the level we usually expect from Filfors. I don't really know how much he improved here but he must've developed his handles in the US because I always heard he was a tall PG. Too bad if he is not eligible.

Hey, Id still welcome an Allan Caidic, but maybe as a shooting guard

Of course! Who doesn't like an Allan Caidic? He's the best shooter to have ever played for the Philippine national team. But of course Caidic's natural position is the shooting guard spot. I think he played the 3 spot most of the time during the 80's with the NCC-RP team becoz it was Samboy Lim who played shooting guard. Then in the 1990 Asian Games, Caidic once again played mostly the 3 spot becoz it was Samboy who played the 2 spot. In the 1994 Asian Games, Caidic once again played mostly as small forward becoz it was Ato Agustin who played the 2-guard spot.

But in this modern times, I think a 6-foot-2 small forward like Caidic once was would be too small in which opposing teams would only exploit.

I would add Lazaro to that list. He's always been good on defense and rebounding but now his offense especially his mid-range jumper has really improved.

Lazaro has played a lot of 4 for Ateneo, though. That's his primary position there.

I have seen the midrange jumper, last year or the year before. Good touch from there. Hope Ateneo gets the players to enable him to play more 3.

If PBA ineligibles are included for the next SEA and Asian games might as well use Christian David, Lucero, Balunggay, Winston and Stockton to get tested

I asked about stockton's fiba eligibility here weeks or months ago but no one answered. This answers my question awhile back..

Now will sbp, tim apply for stockton to become fiba local knowing the amount of better players ahead of him?

I worded it that way because I don't know if Stockton's eligible. All there is to it.

I have watched Allan play in the 80s up to his retirement. He did play most of the time as a Shooting guard in Presto as the likes of Tuadles, Jao, Co, and others can play SF. It's true that he played most of the 1990 RP alongside Samboy and Caidic was more of a Shooting Guard. While in defense Samboy was the defender of the opponent's top scorer guard. At that time Allan has the guard skills to play that position. When injuries and age caught up with him, he slowed down and played more in the SF position.

Mike Philipps should turn pro next year. I think he's outgrowing the level of competition in the UAAP so in order to maximize his potential & enhance his development/improvement, he needs to play in the higher level ASAP. Though Philipps is not FIBA-eligible, I'm hoping that SBP will apply for his exemption & FIBA will grant it in a few years. I mean, hope Mike Philipps would be declared FIBA eligible in 3 years time.

At this rate, we might not see 18-25 yo players donning the Gilas jersey at the senior level unless they're really above and beyond (e.g. Kai, Tamayo, Dwight, etc.)

CTC prefers experienced players with size and majority of those are in the 27-34 age bracket.

Of the youth players since 2022, I only see Caelum Harris, Konov, Gemao, Alas, Bayla, and Zain having a shot.

That's the 1990-1997 bracket if we're using this year. I don't think a lot are qualified so far.

1995: Arvin
1996: Heading, Boatwright (NP)
1997: Navarro, Ange (NP)

All I can think of.
