His problem is on the defensive end.

On offense, he has good enough bbiq/skills to imitate the role of Johnny A. The triangle takes a while to get used to.

Yes it something he must learn too. TC is really known to be a defensive coach. But the clash of style might be an issue for me

Yeah it's not the most optimal fit.

The system does not require his best trait while it emphasizes his weak trait. The system doesn't really need a dynamic floor general while at the same time it requires an excellent defender.

On the bright side, now he has no choice but to become a better defender (hopefully that is the plan of CTC).

If RJ Abarrientos is a deadweight on defense, then maybe we should rather have a taller & better defender point guard for Gilas as Iskati Thompson's reliever. I'm thinking that maybe either Alec Stockton or Schonny Winston of Converge is the better option. Stockton is around 6-foot-2 (about 3 to 4 inches taller than RJ), is a decent defender & has decent offensive game as well. Winston on the other hand is around 6-foot-1, is also a pretty decent defender & of course is a threat in offense. In short, both Stockton & Winston are good size point guards who won't be of any liability in defense. Aren't most of us here been clamoring for good size point guards for the national team?

I remember some poster here expressing their aversion on RJ Abarrientos & SJ Belangel a few years ago when these 2 point guards played for the all-amateur Gilas team of coach Tab Baldwin in 2021, saying Abarrientos & Belangel being midget point guards will only be targets for exploitation by opposing teams, especially in world level basketball.

IRC Johnny was a decent defender. Also, at that time TC did not have a playmaking big SF. They played a lot off Hawkins in the post but they still needed Johnny to break down defense. This RJ pick this early looks like a bad pick. He did not pan out in JP, maybe because of his defense? SJ meanwhile is still going strong, I guess because partly he gives effort on defense. Tenorio when he was younger was able to keep up with the taller PGs. But laterals and effort seem to have been RJ's problem since college.

Yes, uncle Johnny was really a decent defender. he was good at stealing & deflecting the ball. I remember PBA coaches & players at that time saying like "If you have the ball, always watch out for Johnny because he may just steal that ball from you like a candy".

Not only was Johnny a decent defender, he was among the best before old age and injuries caught up. He was All-defensive team for many years. Apart from using his quickness, he was deceptively strong. Despite his small size, it was hard to take advantage of him in post ups because he was hard to move.

It's all about effort. Caram despite being shorter works really hard on defense compared to RJ. And he's really well conditioned. Maybe he needs to work on his conditioning too?

Tab definitely did good for PH basketball. Not a fan of the guy but obviously he has changed things for the better basketball tactics wise. That being said the story looks far from certain but this plus rumored Indonesia interest makes me guess Tab wants to move on from Ateneo.

The biggest impact he made is not necessarily in terms of tactics, but more the importance of the coach in a team. Noticed that ever since he arrived, there has been a lot more scrutiny (and praise) on a team's coach.

Why do I have this feeling that if coach Tab Baldwin agrees to coach the Tall Blacks anew, the more na mahihirapan tayong talunin ang New Zealand? I mean, we had difficulty beating the Tall Blacks before & I think mas lalo tayong mahihirapan with coach Tab on their side.

I just hope coach Tim Cone & our Gilas team prove me wrong.

Tab affected our roster construction as well, at least in the Gilas level. He brought in tall wings like Navarro and Oftana, and tried to convert Balti to a wing. Brought in Ange Kouame as a defensive NP big, and Carl and Balti as potentially versatile tweener forwards.

Showed the importance of defense in tactics and size and balance in roster construction. Reinforced my view that we compete internationally through defense.

So Gilas beating Tall Blacks will only be a dream for years to come with Tab possibly coaching. I mean there are better coaches than Tab and his coaching style is now readable more than ever. But he still a good coach and, with Tall Blacks, he has the tools - size, physicality, skills and support.

I had the feeling he was done in the PH when Chot took over. He likely won't get another high profile job in there again seeing how unpopular he is with the other empire. It's better for him to move on and NZ is still a decent team rather than rot in our collegiate leagues.

How many times Tim cone proved us wrong.. from beating China and legendary coach Djorkevic and beat world rank number 6 Latvia led by FIBA World cup best coach Luca Banchi.. those coaches are in same level or maybe better than Tab.. but he prove that he can be on the same level as those legendary international coaches...

I still feel we will beat NZL, as good as coach Tab is, Tim cone is not that pushover, he is also a very good coach.. his resume speaks for himself.. he also beat high profile coaches such as Djorkevic, Banchi and Goorjian... We have size already to match up with Tall blacks...Junmar alone can bully those NZL bigs, Brownlee will be a matchup nightmare for NZL.. and our defense is very good under Cone.. and I'm sure CTC already studied Baldwin style of coaching.. As long as CTC is with Gilas, I'm not worried even Tab goes to his native land...

If I were coach Tab, I would rather coach Qatar or Indonesia, both was rumored to be next destination for Tab.. Both likely give better salary for him and prove that he can coach not so good teams..

if indeed CTB accepts his return stints at NZL

then the match-up between the Tall Blacks and Gilas for the coming windows

will be a battle between two defensive minded coaches

for this, Gilas had a big advantage as far as system familiarity are concern

and Tall Blacks had only a few weeks of familiarity unless the players and the rest of the coaching staff

decided to come over a few months before their window games @ MOA considering CTB ie still preoccupied with ADMU at that time

no Jamie for the rest of the year and expect Mason to occupy that slot

Scotty is not yet on his hotty level so expects a limited work rate

same thing with AJ

Baldwin and cone are okay because we have seen a nightmare coach like "bahala na kayo indoctrinator" choke seyer.

Cone is competent, but is still very vulnerable as an employee of the sanmig group in the pba. He will only form a team that the pba and san mig will allow to be financed.

Thus, abando who is overeager in prioritizing the nice compensation from korean and japanese teams may never be seen in a sanmig funded nt. Qmb and gani will be welcomed as they are okay with pba employment. Some tab favorites like kouame and other ateneo players i feel will be low priority in a cone team.

Maganda sistema ng up maroons. There are rich sponsors, but they dont have a beef against each other. These wealthy sponsors also trust the competence of team selection officers, and their selection process and criteria. Dlsu also has a good selection group too.

Considering that only very lucky events like kai and aj being present in youth and senior teams can save seyer and cone nt's, the pbs hardly improved on the diabolical bap.

All top world teams have 6-8 talented and strong players 2 meters and taller AS A MATTER OF PRINCIPLE. Why??? Because with big and quick players, you can take out the inside game of any team that doesnt have monsters like prime shaq and jabbar. You can force then the hostiles to try and kill you in the perimeter, knowing that not many countries have steph currys or jordans. You also need 6-8 bigs because injuries are a given not a gamble in the nt milieu.

The cone team was too undersized and untalented to break even the top world 30. You need good players like kai, fajardo and aj for that (aguilar is okay, but really too old). Then, you need something like qmb, mphillips, gani and kouame too. If not these four, something with size and abilities like them.

The team doesnt need asean-class players like amos and the guy he replaced. Kailangang mahinog pa sila. Cone clearly ignored common-sense in getting these two. Even oftana and quiambao are asian-grade at best. They havent shown the capabilities we have seen in australian, new zealander, and some arab 2-3s in their nts.

Work in progress din ang national team ni cone, and without big upgrades, will also amount to nothing. Lima singko naman ang guards within and outside the pba. Thus, if cone gets the best four 2-way guards available, plus a proven good distance scoring machine like heading, it should be enough.

That win against China was mostly due to Brownleee going nuclear.

Let’s not overexcite ourselves.

We need to beat NZ this November.
