what I don’t like about Heading is his handle and inability to take care of the ball, he accumulated a few turnovers in the Dubai tournament as the pg

yep! you can sag off from Scottie but you can't leave Heading wide open. we don't need Heading to break the press, we have Perez and Newsome already, we just need him to sit in the corner, flare, come off ball screens, use as decoy... Scottie is not a threat in FIBA, Heading opens up the floor.

Agree.
Among the below 6-foor-4 Gilas guards/wings, Heading obviously has the best 3-point shooting. His 3-pt shooting is clearly way better than anyone among Iskati Thompson, CJ Perez & Chris Newsome. In fact I see Heading as the best 3-pt shooter in Phi basketball at present.

I see Heading as the finest 3-pt shooting wingman in Phi basketball since Allan Caidic & Jeff Chan. Heading is that good. Its unfortunate that he hasn't played enough games for the national team in the last 4 years or so.

Yes, and he's another Gilas prospect being a good size wing (6-foot-5). I feel if Oftana continues to struggle with Gilas (I hope not), then maybe Tuffin could be a good replacement.

It's mind boggling how Oftana plays like Jayson Tatum in the PBA but in FIBA setting he's like a saling kit kit. He settles for highly contested fade aways, doesn't attempt a layup, misses wide open threes, i mean, c'mon bro. You're supposed to be the Philippines' next star.

I wonder if he just needs more burn/experience or his game just can't translate to World-level. I think Tim Cone is trying to be patient with this guy. At least have a decent showing next year otherwise he needs to be replaced

idk what's in NBL1 that makes him wanna stay there. I get it Australia is Australia. you're with your family but salary's not as good as PBA. Maybe if an NBL team picks him up his decision will finally make sense but he has to play in a more competitive league if he wants Tim Cone to notice.

Wouldn't this impressive performance of Heading (especially in that game vs. Ukraine) in the Jones Cup earn him offers from B-league or from pro teams in Taiwan? I mean, the money is I think better in either Japan or Taiwan basketball than in the Australian NBL-1.

What I noticed was that even without Mackenzie Moore the offense of SGA flowed decently in the Finals with Heading as PG. His main weakness though reared in the end game. He is not a high FT shooter. He missed 2 FTs I think in the last 2 minutes. In the second time around he was not aggressive in driving in the 2 man game with Dwight and passed it too early. It’s really weird for a high 3 FG shooter I think he is just 60-70% FT shooter.

I think Oftana is just bothered by those tall players in world level basketball. I think in the Asian level, he will be serviceable for Gilas.

Oftana is a good system defender, but we need him to be decent in man as well for Gilas. That's the minimum, be a good defender, especially at SF, although he has played 2 under Cone. If he can't shoot, at least defend well.

I think we need a good defender as our full-time SF. Someone who can stick with his man at the minimum. Malonzo and Oftana have to develop into those sooner or later.

He is comfy when his guards are 6’1-6’2 or slow footed 6’5s. He is not comfortable shooting and driving against same sized guys who are quick. He gave effort on defense. But Navarro is taller and a better defender.

With all the nitpicking going on with Oftana I think he still is a better shooter than Malonzo in FIBA and has proven to be a capable 3 and D wing in the last Asian Games. But I do hope that coach Jong develops Jonel Policarpio who is a quicker and more athletic version of Oftana.

I decided to look at his career stats, his free throw shooting overall with Gilas is at 71%. Which is on the lower side for a guard. I agree with paliganibossalfrancis that he works best as an offscreen or movement shooter type.

Sir r1ck,

on the coming Gov. Cup, I'm looking for Ken Tuffin and Will Navarro's work rate, if they are still one of the few candidates for that possible 3 and D wing.

for sometime those dudes was always mentioned on several discussions but due to some events esp. to WillNav who only played several games from the previous conferences after his full recovery from ACL.

as for Ken, well I hope this time he is well adjusted to the PBA games after his stint in NZL.

let's see.

Im just happy that the current gilas regime puts premium on height

Now we need to train versatility to go with that height. 6'5"+ wings and 6'7"+ fours who can switch, and even some 6'4"-6'5" wings who can defend 2 and 3. Can complement Kai and AJ. Puerto Rico, Brazil.

As for Arana, yeah, Cone's correct. With his size, he should be a four at most. However, his skillset and maybe quickness is that of a 5.

i laugh at all those who suggest Arana to be serviceable for Gilas in international competitions. Good thing Cone, realizes that PBA bigs have to be BIG if they want to be competitive. Anyone not named Pingris or De Ocampo will not be acceptable if they are around just 6'5-6'6.

And the local leagues arent helping either take for example in the MPBL Baltazar was played mainly as a center/power forward but during his time with Gilas he became a servicable wing player. And we always see it in the PBA as well, Northport had Lucero a natural wing playing center and Navarro who was played as a wing in FIBA being used exclusively as a powerforward.

Navarro did push the ball and bring it up in transition. And PF can sometimes be occupied by a wing. Kawhi, Tatum, Shane Battier. The problem will lie if the wing is used like a traditional 4 instead of a wing.
