Reuben Terrado

Tim Cone on the possibility of bringing RJ Abarrientos to Gilas: "That’s a long ways away."

I really hope he doesnt stick with the 12, Amos honestly doesnt bring alot to the team right now, id rather give it to someone who can actually compete for a playing spot.

I think if Zav Lucero is able to fully recover and get back to the way he plays while in UP pre injury, SBP should consider applying his exemption from FIBA.

That'll be a long list of players we'd love to be provided exemptions :
Lucero 6'6
Ballungay 6'6
Holt 6'3
Barefield 6'1
Koon 6'5
M. Philipps 6'7
QMB 6'9
Christian David 6'6
Kouame 6'10

We could send these guys during SEA & Asian Games along with Boatwright.

The games (& size) of Christian David, Lucero & Ballungay, Rosario at first glance look similar. Last time we had these dept and skill was during the days of D.Seigle, Jay Washington, Mike Holper, Devance, Norwood

Amos was Malonzo’s replacement. Japeth was Edu’s. Japeth will probably retire again. Who will be Edus replacement if he gets injured?

that's why we need to seek exemption of Brandon Ganuelas Rosser or Mike Philips.

Mike Philips is more feasible since he studied in La Salle. We need an agile rim protector outside of Kai.

Japeth will remain as an alternate unless he's injured again. Which leaves:

Ange if he gets exemption

Geo Chiu --> he improved and not a bad way to get exposure as a backup.

What's the update on Boatwright's naturalization?

What's the update on Boatwright's naturalization?

in the Senate. Should be done deal by Q4 this year maybe before November window. Real question is when do we replace Brownlee with Boatwright and who's gonna fill JB's shoes as our top perimeter player.

Wishful thinking but Holt exemption and Abbarientos learning the triangle as early as now will change the whole dynamic of Gilas moving forward. In OQT, we had a solid system but lacked star power we could turn to during the last few seconds of the shot clock.

An ideal transition would be:

Brownlee --> Holt (if exempted)
Scottie (if still injured) --> Abbarientos
Japeth --> Edu
Junemar --> Boatwright
Oftana --> Malonzo
Amos --> Abando

We go younger and more athletic with this lineup.

After FIBA Asia Cup 2025 honestly we should phase out Brownlee and Junemar already. They're too old. and also Scottie if his injury will affect his effectiveness on the court. Slipped disc is no joke especially if his game relies on explosiveness and finishing around the rim.

Newsome should also be replaced after 2025. Too old for 2027 and beyond. Worthy replacement? Wishful thinking again but 27-year-old Sedrick Barefield. If not possible then take a closer look at Dalph Panopio. Can't go wrong also with a tall and shifty point guard like Juan Gomez de Liano.

All in their primes this is a scary sight to see:

PG - Barefield, Abbarientos, Perez
SG - Dwight, Abando
SF - Holt, Malonzo, Quiambao
PF - Edu, Tamayo
C - Kai, Boatwright

Schonny Winston is worth looking into as a Newsome replacement.

JB32 will mostly likely be our NP till Asia Cup.

Bennie will be paraded starting from the SEA Games 2025 and WCQ 2027.

For me, the possibility of Mike Philipps getting a FIBA exemption will have a significant impact on Gilas. The guy is really a workhorse in rebounding. At 6-foot-8 & athletic at that, Mike P. can play both the 4 & 5 positions. I think in Asian level basketball, having an athletic & tough 6-foot-8 big guy to play the center position won''t be a mismatch. Lebanon's stretch big 6-foot-8 Ali Haidar sometimes plays the center spot & hindi naman sya nadedehado sa match up.

Agree about Schonny Winston. Unlike Newsome who is a natural wing, Winston is a natural point guard. I think Winstom played as point guard during his college days in the US.

yep. Winston also. Watch him turn into a superstar with Converge. his game reminds me so much of Myles Powell

Exemption of Mike Philips means we have the luxury to cut Kevin Quiambao or Carl Tamayo from the lineup if they don't improve. Both showed promise in Asian windows but their OQT showing were dismal. Philips is an intimidating presence on both ends of the floor. Size, hustle, energy, not afraid of physicality. We'll be a tougher team with him. He's like a taller Mark Pingris who's actually really skilled.

I feel both KQ and Tamayo are gonna struggle at the world level. Their skillset simply doesn’t bode well against the lengthier Euro players.

Against Asian and Latino teams, they can still contribute.

why do we want a lot of players to be exempted? are we not confident our locals (and aplayers who got their passport prior to the 16th bday) can help our NP?
i have nothing against exemption but, as it implies, this will not be normally given to countries. so there is a possibility none of them gets exempted, or 1 or 2 would. Erika Dy should handle this, but the coaching staff and the fans shouldnt even think about these players as part of Gilas unless cleared.
i think another question to be asked is:, out of the list, if we can only exempt 1, who should be it?

For me, Mike or Ange. They could solve a lot of interior defense problems if AJ goes down, and thus, help put less pressure on our perimeter players. They have a safety net inside, e.

Ange should be priority with Phillips next. He is our Rodman. Tireless workhorse.

It's possible as Gilas is now primarily an SMC-backed team. Chualay and Marcial work in tandem so the latter should have no issues cooperating.

I hope CTC reconsiders expanding the pool to at least 16 for the Asia Cup. It's a longer tournament and we need to have some depth.

A 12-team pool works for the windows as those are only two-games.

this can work until FIBA Asia Cup 2025. Beyond that Cone must make major adjustments in the pool. He needs to replace 6-7 players if we want to be competitive in WC 2027.

I don't think CTC will replace half of his line up.. I see only 2 or 3 players will be replaced.. his triangle is hard to learn.. it takes years to learn the system.. or actually I don't see he will replace his current roster.. maybe additional players.. but that's Tim cone, who are we to decide his strategy for Gilas? I just hope that Baltazar and Abando should be there.. I know CTC wants a two way players, these two are good 2 way players... Although RJ and Go have a legit chance now since they are now playing in Ginebra and will learn the system of CTC moving forward...

Here's the ages of the 14 after the Asia Cup:

Japeth (reserve): 38
JB: 37
June Mar: 35
Newsome: 35
Scottie: 32
CJ: 31
Oftana: 29
Malonzo: 29
Dwight: 26
AJ: 25
Carl: 24
Quiambao: 24
Kai: 23
Mason (reserve): 20

By the time of the World Cup, here are the ages of the players:

Japeth (reserve): 40
JB: 39
June Mar: 37
Newsome: 37
Scottie: 34
CJ: 33
Oftana: 31
Malonzo: 31
Dwight: 28
AJ: 27
Carl: 26
Quiambao: 26
Kai: 25
Mason (reserve): 22

We need someone who can take the place of June Mar and Newsome in case they decide to retire. JB might retire too.

After AJ, Carl, KQ, and Mason, our pool at four is just Balti, and the naturalized players JB and Bennie. Maybe Carino. Troy is 32, has a history of poor performances in FIBA, and is a defensive liability. Arana exclusively plays center in the PBA.
