Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

But I have a question... Justin Young of Vietnam, Lamb, Lish and Morgan of Thailand, Jawato of Indonesia getting a pass while Pringle and Cstand are not? Is there limitations of taking exemptions? Or because of "developing basketball nation" criteria? We are talking this long time ago.. now even Thon Maker will switch from Australia to South Sudan as a local player and before Eric Gordon of Bahamas... If the rules that FIBA applied you said then those players should not allowed too.. or just we need to pay big for their exemptions...

How many exemptions do Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia have? How many exemptions are in people’s fantasy here? That would be at least 10. We already have exemptions in Greg and Newsome. I forgot who else. We each have our exemptions. There is no fast rule there. We are not victims here. It’s weird to hear us complain everytime we do not get an exemption for a 20 year old as if every country gets it all the time.

Thailand has 3, Vietnam and Indonesia have only 1.. Philippines already have Lassiter, Lutz, Slaughter, Newsome and Ahamnisi.. but we just only used Newsome out of 5 players were exempted... We waste other players due to availability and politics...

Yeah, Newsome's the only exemption that truly panned out for us, but even he's a short-term player due to his age.

We need to choose who to exempt. Someone that fills pressing needs, and someone who's stayed here for a while.

With RJ Abarrientos getting drafted into Ginebra I think its about time he gets a Gilas call up. Im pretty sure with RJ's ball handling, shot making and vision he will no doubt impress CTC and at least earn himself a spot on that rumored extended player pool.

If he is good I think he gets called up. He plays like Mav Ahanmisi then he doesn't.

I think in Asian level competition RJ Abarrientos is a good point guard prospect for Gilas. Coach Tim & Al Chua must have seen something on RJ for them to make him 3rd overall draft pick over guys like Kai Balungay & Caelan Tiongson.

Having Abarrientos for Ginebra would serve Gilas in good stead since the young point guard will get used to coach Tim's triangle offense which is the same system coach Tim is running with Gilas. So when you got an Iskati Thompson & RJ Abarrientos as your point guards at Gilas, you have point guards who are very much acccustomed to the triangle offense which is Gilas' bread & butter.

We also have a reliable shooter at the point.

Scottie is okay. Just isn’t his bread and butter.

I am just asking

Why did Thailand List, Morgan and Lamb can play all together while Pringle can't.

Thailand, in FIBA's viewpoint, is a developing nation in basketball the same way they are looking at Indonesia, South Sudan and Bahamas.

I think we can still get the exemption as the developed basketball nation by producing players. I mean, a Nigerian, who is studying in the Philippines, playing basketball in our high school competition (probably ages 13-16) and for our domestic league (MPBL, PBA, Asiabasket), import or otherwise, has a very good chance to be classified as a local once naturalized and got his PH passport later on.

i agree that it might be easier to defend exempting someone who spent a long time in the country than do what Bahamas or Thailand did. i mean, how can we say to Fiba, we want a Jalen Green or Clarkson to be exempted when we beat [NODE="6"]Special[/NODE] Latvia with neither player? it means, what we have now, we have a developed basketball system to compete with higher ranked countries.

so that college Gilas team that beat SK and did a good showing against Serbia, are mostly in the PBA now? I think only SJ and Geo havent gone. Dwight was injured if im not mistaken and AJ was still in the US that time. kind nice that that core is still around.

i saw rumours that Magnolia is trying to get Navarro, Tolentino, and Flores. for Jalalon and Abueva. if that pushes though, then Navarro might become an option too for CTC. i think thats a win for Gilas.

I read that SMB is the team trying to get Navarro.

The rumor came after I read the Mags one.

as long as its with SMC, I guess its ok. I dont think Balti will go to an SMC team but i dont see why Delta wont lend him IF long hair ask for him only for Gilas. then again, he has to make CTC want him knowing he has a set of bigs already and wings are ok specially if Malonzo is back. some fans want Oftana to be replaced and sometimes Perez as well. but Balti isnt really the player to replace them anyway.

depends if Navarro doesnt want to sign a long term contract, though for him nursing post ACL it might be better to settle for a year or so.

Navarro has a year left on his contract extension. He better play well if he wants an overseas contract.
