Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

  • Thread starter Thread starter IPC2

Here's my take on who should be considered first per position:

Guards: Bolick, Heading
Wings: Navarro, Lopez, Bayla, Harris
Big: Carino

Bolick and Heading are the best options at guard, and Heading's no slouch on defense.

As for the wings, defense should be the priority, so it's Navarro, Lopez, Bayla, and Harris. Same rationale for bigs, that's why Carino should come first in my opinion.

I'll add Schonny to the list. He's a good defender, and he's 26.

Bro, do you think that if a player is a decent defender in the PBA, there's a very good chance he will carry that over in the FIBA game, especially in the Asian level?

Not necessarily. Pogoy's known for his defense in the PBA but was a liability on that end in FIBA. June Mar's a multiple-time All-Defense Team member, but he struggles defending in FIBA without a helper behind him. Barroca is a good PBA defender, but it didn't amount to much in FIBA.

I just look at tools (length, lateral quickness), commitment on that end, awareness, and for bigs, timing too. That's why I think a guy like Carino can translate in the Asian level because of his length and timing. With Schonny, he has good lateral quickness and has commitment on defense.

Pba players defend with their hands which usually gets called foul in FIBA. Hence the disaster that was the 2019 Gilas under Yeng.

we need to learn how to defend using our bodies and positioning.

about time Dwight was assigned his true position.

Like him or not, Dwight is a guard. Not a small forward that Chot kept playing him as.

coaches in RP should teach papa dweet’s height as guard..

this may sound a broken record but we should not pigeonhole kids.. teach them guard skills irregardless what height they may end up with

With Stephen Holt and most likely Kai Balunggay under Tim Cone, it would be crazy if the SBP somehow manages to get them FIBA exemptions.

That makes Go a Gilas candidate then, I don't really care about ginebra rigging anymore at least the national team might benefit from this

Go only flourished in the national team because of Tab. He is an undersized center who is a weak finisher underneath the basket.

Too small to be a center while too slow to be a forward... No benefit of getting him in fibay

If I want a big, I'd rather go for Mike Phillips or even Kemark Carino rather than Go. If the big is not June Mar, Kai, and AJ, we need someone who can protect the paint in FIBA, or has the potential to, or someone who can play the 4 in that stage. We already have Carl, AJ, Mason, Quiambao, JB, and potentially Boatwright in the 4 position, so that leaves a candidate for the 5.

While Go is smart in rotations, he's undersized for a center, and has neither length nor leaping ability to protect the paint as a 5.

Dwight could not dribble or pass properly once a top opponents is guardian him like Brazil. Even in BLeague he loses the ball against smaller guards.

Everything he does can be done by Tamayo and Amos who are younger.

meant develop a player like him. i didn’t say about playmaking..

With Boss Al and SMC anything is possible hehe
If Ginebra ends up with Holt and Barefield, they'd be filed for exemptions as Gilas replacement for Newsome/Perez

Holt and barefield are too old for exemptions..

FIBA is just like any other private corp and SMC knows a thing or two about getting deals done. Anything is possible w/ Chua and boss RSA

They tried to apply for local with pringle. many times denied.. besides holt is what? 32? they’ll consider the number of years of players played in local league and the associated with the country.. on that part pringle failed. Pringle like barefield are same age when they enter the league..

for reference

PH passport before 16 years old is possible for foreign-born players. Based on my understanding, there are two ways to do so:

1. Derivative citizenship - where the PH citizenship of the person naturalized is passed to his children in accordance with the conditions provided under the law.
2. Legislative naturalization - where the person has been naturalized through the act of Congress. you don't have to be 21 years old or older to undergo this process. case in point: Favour Onoh, 18 years old.

Exemption is still possible for other cases even if our naturalization process, judicial or administrative, has a minimum age requirement:

1. Years of residence;
2. The fact that one studied here in the Philippines;
3. Basketball heritage (has the Philippines contributed to the basketball development of the player?);
4. Number of years that one played basketball in our domestic leagues (this does not state whether one should be classified as local).

Note: this is just my legal theory based on our laws as well as the FIBA eligibility rules.

barefield, holt failed on this categories

unlike newsome who studied in ateneo and played number of years from college to pros..
