In your opinion, besides Abando and maybe Mike Phillips (if he gets that exemption), who do you guys think Gilas should get to improve the team for the next World Cup and the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup.

Naz Reid as Naturalized Player

The dream for Gilas is for somehow the SBP secures the exemptions of Ange Kouame, Mike Phillips and Kai Baluggay. And if that happens imagine a pool of Sotto, Edu, Kouame, Phillips and Balunggay that Gilas can choose from. In the last Asian Games just think if Sotto was available and he was on the floor together with Kouame, I think that would be the best possible front court duo Gilas could have.

Cones analytic guy Patrick Partosa was already with Gials since 2023 world cup...Rhenz Abando was a great spark plug for us

If Geo Chiu all of the sudden performs in the Jones Cup..... Maybe, just maybe he deserves a second look.

This is a bad decision imho. We've had so many bigs waived in the B-League without seeing playing time in favor of better foreign forwards and centers. Only Kai has had a break there as a pinoy bigman because of the number of viewers and clout he brought with him. Quite a misstep, Tamayo and Baltazar's developments have been bottlenecked for signing contracts there, no idea why they thought this was a good idea, going to the PBA would've been better

Hmm, I would disagree for the sake of discussion. But fair point. I believe it's a wise decision for Geo. In the Philippines he already has the reputation of "bonjing," and "malambot". In fact, his batchmates in Ateneo (as in students) apparently collectively thinks he's bano. Like he's only with the Blue Eagles because of his height. I doubt he can change that perception of PBA coaches as well. He'll end up being benched then demoted to the MPBL. Filipino coaches aren't necessarily patient when it comes to developing players, especially our bigs, they want finished products right away. Geo's not built like that. He's Filipino-Chinese. Studied in Xavier. Came from a well-off family. Sheltered. Doesn't have that killer instinct as he'll be ok whether he plays basketball or not. Not his fault he's a softy in a 6'10 frame.

Maanwhile in Japan, scouts and coaches there believe they can develop Geo. Can't teach height after all. They see something in him. He's a champion. Part of Tab's Blue Eagle and Gilas Cadets program. He'll have a year learning what it takes to be a pro. He'll lift weights do skill work and learn team-centric concepts. He'll also earn huge money in the process. Whether he becomes a key contributor to his team or get sent back to the Philippines, he'll come out a better player which is a win-win for him and the PBA team that will pick him up. Also a win for our NT if something clicks. His confidence after that BLeague stint will be different as well. Sometimes all a player needs is confidence and swagger. As what happened with Kai, he might also get that in Japan.

After their BLeague stints, Tamayo is KBL bound. Not much improvements in his game but his conditioning is significantly better. His IQ also improved a bit as well. Moving forward in his pro career he can always say he's won on all levels. A UAAP champ and a BLeague champ.

Meanwhile Balti, yes very disappointing BLeague stint but what's worse is he breached his KBL contract and listened to Delta Pineda to play in the MPBL. He regressed instead of looking for the next best option. Well, can't blame him because he's a first-time parent and needs to provide for his family, his presence as a father is needed as well, but basketball wise not very smart to go from arguably the best league in Asia to a second-tier pro league in the Phils.

That wasn’t a bad roster.

walang kwenta lang talaga and preps.

Not a bad roster for FIBA Asia Cup. Lee, Bolick, Perez and Blatche is a problem for defenses in Asia.

But for Worlds? vs Bogdanovich, Belinelli, Jokic and Mejri? We all saw how that played out.

Yeah, we need to add in case of injury (AJ, Scottie) or age retirement (JB, June Mar, Newsome). Expand the pool. I expect Japeth to retire again, so that shrinks the pool to 13. We will need another big, hopefully one who plays D. Malonzo's now injury-prone, so we need someone to sub for him at the wing. As for Scottie, sub at the guard too, or maybe a wing, since Cone's putting Oftana at 2.

The only that is FIBA ready at the OQT level that could be a replacement for Scottie is Bolick, they gotta have Heading too, just in case they feel like Perez is not a good matchup on teams they have to face in a tournament,as for the bigs, heck Balti,Geo,Carino could be a good backup for AJ even if AJ is on the team,he has to have limited minutes not at 30+mins per game, for Oftana and Malonzo, the two that comes to mind are Lopez and Navarro.

KBL is the better option for our bigger players as they can go side to side with the World Import there.

Sir C2,

we could never tell.

in an imperfect and filthy world of ours, money talks so loud.

in fairness to Rutgers Univ. it is considered as one of the best schools in the US inside top 50.

they are known academically for courses like IT, Nursing, Biological Science, Sports Science, Finance, Law among others

but on sports specifically on mens and womens basketball, well I considered them in the lower-mid tier team(In my own personal opinion.)

yup he is in the top 5 class of 2025, many thanks to his MVP like performance in a recently concluded Jordan Classic.

if he somehow decided to enter the transfer portal to play in a much higher ranked team chances are his stock may rise significantly

and where talking about 6'4sh to 6'5 ceiling here, there's a lot out there in the pond maybe if he had a growth spurts(many thanks to his Afro genes) to make it to the 6'8 to 6'9 level then that's another story.

amongst the pinoy hafus 6'4 1/2 -6'5 Jalen Green is still the gold standard but we all know he can't crack even the 12th spots of Team Uncle Sam because as I said there's a lot of big fish in the 6'3 to 6'6 category.

he is a one and done prospect. he was the number [NODE="1"]Home[/NODE] player in his class prior to Flagg reclassifying up and Ace Bailey suddenly going Tmac on everybody. why would a 1 and done player go to a transfer portal if he can go to the NBA after his 1 year or play as an import in another country?

look, if he suddenly suits up for Gilas, than yay! a big yay. but career wise, i dont see any advantage of going to the Philippines to play college ball. how will dominating UAAP\NCAA (RP) make his market value above where he is right now?
you are right, money talks the loudest. going to the NBA after 1 year in college will give him that. are you saying a college school in the Philippines can give him NBA level salary to study in the country?

It was probably SBP which never invited Balti, not Chua, because the PLDT group and Converge are corporate rivals

Nope.. Balti, like Heading, Abando and other overseas players are not priority.. and if this is the case then why Bolick not invited despite he is already under MVP group?

Ange should be classified as a local.

pero wala eh. Mataas masyado pride ni Panlilio. To him, Ange is part of Tab’s circle and that’s an automatic disregard.

Panlilio or PBA not putting him to play even just a regular import in every conference? PBA rules on naturalized players sucks... Even Blatche can't play here despite he's a naturalized Filipino

It has been a problem since the Douthit days.

It makes no sense for him. Precedents of highly ranked american hs players who went overseas are Jennings, Lamelo and Mudiay. But they went to pro leagues in China and Australia. If money is the motivation, that makes more sense.

In terms of basketball, scouts will take it against him and his stock will drop. Then you add the element of injury, very high risk low reward.

To be an nba lottery pick, timing is very important. Right now he is nba lottery level, he can't make moves that will derail that.

With JB's success as our NP, I think that should be rewarded with a permanent roster spot. Not just for him, but for all NP's.

JB is a Ginebra player. Boatwright is SMB. Kouame is under MVP umbrella. is someone willing to pay Blatche? Douthit looks to be focusing with coaching. i mentioned this months ago. i would like to see the NPs play as local in PBA but we know these players will go and play with the already strong teams. there isnt enough to go around.
