Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Qatar getting a pass via host, 2 of them will not make it... But I hope FIBA will also give Qatar same treatment as Indonesia.. their rankings are too low and for sure they can't handle the strengths of world level teams... Look at Bahrain, they were massacred last OQT, and Qatar is more weaker than them.. it will be more bigger than what Bahrain experience... They can host sure but make them work hard to get that spot as host...

They might not even qualify for the Asia Cup.

OK, after this OQT, I like the defense, fight, and effort from this squad. Newsome, CJ, Dwight, and JB defended the perimeter well. Scottie will add to that.

We need AJ back. We got killed on PnR's when June Mar was around, it's great that Cone minimized that threat though our perimeter defenders.

We need an outlet other than our NP. Dwight's a secondary scorer, so are the likes of CJ. June Mar's a role player, although an effective one at that on offense.

Coach Tim needs to trust his bench a bit more these qualifiers, especially in non-bearing games. We need them to get into a rhythm to help our starters. Our bench played only 145 out of 600 minutes. I understand that you need your best players there as much as possible, but when you're out of options, like in Brazil, time to unleash the bench, they can do something with it.

Again, some pieces of our roster are aging. Newsome will be 34 in a few weeks, and 37 by the time of the World Cup. June Mar will turn 35 in November, and will be 37 by the WC. JB is 37 next year. We have JB's successor in Bennie or Ange (although Bennie's the first option). We will need to find options for Newsome (a combo guard, better if two-way) and June Mar (a big, better if he can defend, although Mason might have a shot). I think CJ and Scottie can still play at a high level at 33 and 34.

CTC already said that they will not replace any of those players... He will stick with those players no matter what... His system is hard to learn.. if we change many players then our progeiwill be back to scratch again... So pabayaan nalang natin how will CTC likes in our program... Even I like the likes of JC, Abando and Baltazar, he will not tap them on foreseen future...

Not really change but add on to the team,so that way he could have a pick of players according to the matchup so he won't be limited to what he have,he could have a pool of no more than 16 players,he's not too concerned with avialability and injuries since he would just pick someone from any of the SMC teams, just like the 3x retired Japeth for example.I don't think its just that it concerns that learning his system is hard, heck the Brazilians figure it out soon enough according to their coach, its politics again, you can see and smell it a mile away.

Yeah, we need to add in case of injury (AJ, Scottie) or age retirement (JB, June Mar, Newsome). Expand the pool. I expect Japeth to retire again, so that shrinks the pool to 13. We will need another big, hopefully one who plays D. Malonzo's now injury-prone, so we need someone to sub for him at the wing. As for Scottie, sub at the guard too, or maybe a wing, since Cone's putting Oftana at 2.

Baltazar is the answer… I hope that now Baltazar enters the PBA, the management should now consider him.. he’s a PBA representative too… diba gusto ng PBA is having many PBA representatives in Gilas, then Baltazar is a best choice.. he’s incoming PBA rookie this upcoming season…

Dweet is solid secondary against non athletic teams but a 3rd option at best..the explosiveness against the likes of dr and brazil is where cj perez or a aggressive brp was desired

LeBron Lopez and Callum Harris will fare better.

Our run in last OQT is like Slam dunk anime... Shohoku beat the best team on the tournament (Sannoh), but their next game the lost because they are exhausted beating top team... Same with Gilas.. we beat Latvia but after that we were physical and emotional tired on the next game... What a great run... NZL is next!!! It's time now to beat them...

Didnt help that Shohoku have a 6 man rotation, well in the manga Anzai fielded 7 players as Kakuta was given spot minutes when Sakuragi got a nosebleed, also Rukawa was given a rest in the last few mins of the 1st half.

Feels like brp is no longer aggressive these days

Sir Dotch,
cc: Sir Ja.he,

we do hope that the Harper bros may be Gilas bound

I had a gut feeling that Dylan and Sage will be UAAP bound somewhere down the road.
--snip--
Wait, you mean the consensus top 5 pick for 2025, and the player every major scout says as second coming of james harden will go to UAAP? Did I miss anything?

Sir C2,

we could never tell.

in an imperfect and filthy world of ours, money talks so loud.

in fairness to Rutgers Univ. it is considered as one of the best schools in the US inside top 50.

they are known academically for courses like IT, Nursing, Biological Science, Sports Science, Finance, Law among others

but on sports specifically on mens and womens basketball, well I considered them in the lower-mid tier team(In my own personal opinion.)

yup he is in the top 5 class of 2025, many thanks to his MVP like performance in a recently concluded Jordan Classic.

if he somehow decided to enter the transfer portal to play in a much higher ranked team chances are his stock may rise significantly

and where talking about 6'4sh to 6'5 ceiling here, there's a lot out there in the pond maybe if he had a growth spurts(many thanks to his Afro genes) to make it to the 6'8 to 6'9 level then that's another story.

amongst the pinoy hafus 6'4 1/2 -6'5 Jalen Green is still the gold standard but we all know he can't crack even the 12th spots of Team Uncle Sam because as I said there's a lot of big fish in the 6'3 to 6'6 category.

Based on Naveen Ganglani's podcast, there are rumors that Lucero, Galinato, Harper, Jr. and QMB might get their eligibility as locals in FIBA. I don't know if it's true. But if it is indeed true, this will be big for us, especially the addition of Lucero and Harper, Jr. QMB's game is still untested in pros so I have resevations on him but Lucero and Harper, Jr.'s addition is big.

i hope we can sneak in Brandon Bates there, cant offer much offensively but he more than held his own agaist junemar and was a key player on their defense

Ange is the key to a versatile lineup. Him being classified as a local will open a multitude of options for Tim Cone both offensively and defensively. He should be the successor to Japeth. A frontline of Sotto, Edu, Fajardo, and Kouame with two of them inside the court will do wonders for us.

I dont think Dylan will prioritize NT duties especially since he's ranked in the tier only below prospective No.1 Cooper Flagg, and even if he does, it would be hard because USAB already capped him, albeit in the USA U19 NT.

LeBron Lopez and Callum Harris will fare better.

Lebron Lopez, Rhenz Abando and Caelum Harris World Level

Kevin Quiambao, Calvin Oftana and Carl Tamayo Asian Level

There's gotta be tiers to our pool. We can't expect someone na pang-Asia lang then all of the sudden perform at World Level. We also have to consider that there's a lot of moving parts. Injuries, contracts, availability.

BRP went downhill since he started dating zeinab ha ha

BRP didnt really push himself to be better, right? Or was it the weight of the nation that burned him. He at least tried the GLeague and Summer League circuits, but yeah, i guess he already peaked and plateau'd and just settled to be a rotation player in Japan.

Scottie —> Asian level

We have always known that JMF at this point would be lacking in the highest comp. This is the best Ive seen him but its a bit late. Starting 2014 they should have prioritized his defensive quickness but no. It was only Tab who asked him to lose weight to be quicker. But SMC never supported this as it was his heavier weight that made him dominant in the PBA. It is like seeing Kai and forcing Kai to gain more weight to be more dominant offensively when we need his defense and quickness more.

Why are we so fixated in exempting Kouame. Thats close to impossible. We dont even give our NPs opportunity to play in the PBA. The question should be is can we continue to deny Kouame the NP slot? JB is aging and can be limited by more athletic teams. Boatwright is just a one dimensional shooter with a wingspan just equal to his height of 6’9.5. Edu is often injured. If we hope to reach higher comp we need a center NP. Kai is good but he wont be as strong as JF nor even Kouame. He is best as a stretch 5 and not a post player. We need Kouame for that.
