Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Tamayo, KQ and Kai's development within the triangle and positionless basketball must be really fast-tracked. But having at least one point guard with the height and skillset of Dalph Panopio won't hurt either. Excellent and unselfish facilitator with a decent three-ball, who is also comfortable playing against taller guards. For the longest time I really want Dalph to have an opportunity to ply his wares in the seniors. Sotto and Boatwright will greatly benefit from a point guard like Dalph, even in a hybrid triangle offense.

We already saw how it looks like vs inferior Asian opponents. Hopefully by November we see it again vs a legitimate continental contender New zealand.

2027 WCQ contenders:

Australia
NZ
China
Korea
Iran
Philippines
Japan
Lebanon
Jordan

This is gonna be tough. The two oceania teams are already sure contenders despite NZ being vulnerable.

Iran and Jordan are 50-50 with the former banking on their new gen and the latter’s stars getting old.

No, Bahrain and Saudi are not contenders despite what one poster here keeps on harping.

I think China, Iran, Korea, New Zealand and Jordan are heading for a rebuild. One of them will not make it to World Cup 2027.

Not sure if Thompson could have survived that Latvia press. He'll be clueless in halfcourt sets as well vs Lat-am teams. We have so many options at 1. Newnew should be a lock. Perez proved his worth. Our future bigs are secured as well. Top priority should be to develop wings. Outside of Dwight Ramos, we need another reliable slasher and shot creator who can attract the defense and create opportunities for our bigs and shooters

I hope it's not too late for Abando. He has bad handles though and relies only on beeline drives towards the basket.

I agree bro... if we had Abando in Asian Games no need for Justin Brownlee heroics.

Now if we had AJ Edu, Rhenz Abando, Scottie and Jamie Malonzo this OQT we could've went all the way to Paris. Imagine that type of offense with that kind of athleticism.

Even though we defeated them.I think Tim can learn a thing or two on how latvia shuffle his men, I see zagars only go on spurths in this game almost every change of possesion they change players..

Maybe in motor, tenacity and stamina, yes. Thirdy is relentless on defense plus he has the strength to finish strong consistently around the rim. Aside from that, not even close. He doesn't have the poise, handles, creativity and the bag of Newnew. If only Thompson has the ball control and shiftiness of Newsome, ayos na sana.

I agree he doesn’t have the handle but I’m looking at it from a defensive standpoint, from what I’ve watched of Newsome some pba and Gilas, his handle is limited, he also lacks the athleticism to blow past defenders consistently or create separation. He has a two motion shot that slows his release and also limits his range. He however is able to defensively navigate through screens and has great stamina and motor. He does have poise and is more reliable with the ball than Thirdy but his value comes from defense, Thirdy has developed his playmaking in the bleague though his decision making under pressure in the recent playoffs didn’t look good with some TO and his shot isn’t good either and his ball control is worse than Newsome but he is crafty with the ball

I'd add that we might need another good defensive big in case AJ goes down. Maybe Kemark Carino, even if he's still raw at 26?

The only disagreement I have here is Wright. Not exactly the best FIBA performer (he shot 34.7% from the field, 32% from 3 in the 2019 WC qualifiers), is 33, and is not a good defender, although he can be a secondary playmaker.

It's imperative to have another 1 or 2 international size bigs with the impending retirement of Aguilar and soon with JMF. SBP should work with the exemption of Hepa, QMB or Tolentino.

For me, guys like Lopez and Gemao should be brought on now. I was initially excited with Gemao because at Letran he had the shot creation and ability to create separation with his handle and athleticism but, watching his US stuff and he needs more reps against higher comp since his processing speed seems a little slow and he needs to develop his perimeter scoring more

I'm ok with Lopez in lieu of Oftana in Gilas next iteration but I would prefer Panopio instead of Gemao. Gemao needs more experience and there's the U18 in line.

Bolick or Panopio they both alot of upsides and experience,Lopez over Oftana and Navarro over Malonzo.

Start with the exemption of AK,his upside is he's used to playing Euros now and can handle their physicality,he's the best defensive anchor for CTC's system.Long Hair really has to eat some humble pie and extend a truce to Mr Lao to get some of his prize players now and in the future for Gilas.

Based on Naveen Ganglani's podcast, there are rumors that Lucero, Galinato, Harper, Jr. and QMB might get their eligibility as locals in FIBA. I don't know if it's true. But if it is indeed true, this will be big for us, especially the addition of Lucero and Harper, Jr. QMB's game is still untested in pros so I have resevations on him but Lucero and Harper, Jr.'s addition is big.

This is why I'm not a fan of having Thirdy in the lineup. With his height, 6'2 at most, he must play combo guard. However, his shooting and ball handling are inadequate. He is too small naman to play the 3 spot. But we will see if Tim invites or consider him. Thirdy's work ethic is admirable though. I hope he can improve those weaknesses soon enough.

Honestly we should have kept the core of Ange, Kmark, Balti ,Lopez , Chiu, Bolick, Abando, Navarro etc and gave them more reps or at least include them in practices. Now they're older , raw and have picked up bad habits. Our BB program was going nowhere and we wasted development time.

A team B,where CTC can pick a replacement for injuries or for a better player matchup.

Maybe he meant 6'8 Jayden Harper , not related to Ron Harper. But good if Ron Jr or even Dylan who is Team USA bound

It's Ron Harper, Jr. daw.

Imagine Ron Harper, Jr. (F-6'6), Zav Lucero (F-6'6) and QMB (C-6'10). That lengthens Gilas.

Qatar getting a pass via host, 2 of them will not make it... But I hope FIBA will also give Qatar same treatment as Indonesia.. their rankings are too low and for sure they can't handle the strengths of world level teams... Look at Bahrain, they were massacred last OQT, and Qatar is more weaker than them.. it will be more bigger than what Bahrain experience... They can host sure but make them work hard to get that spot as host...

Our run in last OQT is like Slam dunk anime... Shohoku beat the best team on the tournament (Sannoh), but their next game the lost because they are exhausted beating top team... Same with Gilas.. we beat Latvia but after that we were physical and emotional tired on the next game... What a great run... NZL is next!!! It's time now to beat them...

Sir Dotch,
cc: Sir Ja.he,

we do hope that the Harper bros may be Gilas bound

I had a gut feeling that Dylan and Sage will be UAAP bound somewhere down the road.

the buzzing and murmuring are a little bit subtle now because S87 is within stone throw away.

expect some boombastic agreements in the coming season

allegedly, Mason had an initial bonus of Php 4M(?) on his big decision..meaning it's not yet the icing of the cake.

indeed money in the collegiate level are literally raining during Rainy Season.

we all know that at Uncle Sam's own backyard there's a lot of existing big fish and upcoming big fish from the East Coast, Midwest and up to the West Coast

and they only had 12 available slots on every tourney..mahirap makipag siksikan, it's not comfy.
