Why cone and chot dislike kiefer's game but foreign coaches (shiga coaches, tab and dickel) loves his game?

is it because MVP likes him?

to answer the question. some pinoy coaches preference to scoring guard than a traditional PG.. shiga loves kiefer..

To be fair, Cone runs the triangle, which doesn't need a "traditional PG," just someone to bring up the ball and make the initiating pass.

The issue is, in the current pool, Dwight and JB are the only non-guards capable of bringing up the ball. And we don't usually train non-guards to bring up the ball and facilitate. Cone's trying it with Malonzo, Gabe's a good secondary handler, and Oftana and Navarro are bringing it up in transition situations. Quiambao's training to do it too. However, we might need to train more non-guards to bring up the ball.

Kiefer is good naman in defense.. but anyway tim should take a look on bolick..

Bolick's defense will be a concern, but it's easier to hide a guard on defense. Thing is, only Dwight and Newsome are the off-guards in the pool that can competently defend in the international level.

In my own personal observation, I think Gabe Norwood would be a good defensive coach someday.

starting in the youth level I think he would be decent as an AC for now specifically on skills training specializes on defense minus his tentativeness in offense.

I think he is fully aware of that chink in his armor.

oh dear..I also miss coach Freddie Abuda, he could also be a good AC for the youth squad with the same philosophy of Gabe

his nose for the ball, those not in the stats thing(the in-betweens) during his SMB days are one of the best I've seen as a young basketball fan during that time.

That's for sure... "SIPSIP" kumbaga... MVP also knows that volleyball is now hot commodity, so he will also use this for his brand exposure... But FIVB is not as popular as FIBA worldwide...

I hope our Womens Volleyball team doesn't experience the same faith as the Azkals because just to be honest our womens team has a very low percentage as far as international tourney(s) are concern.

at least our Mens team are low profiled and less toxic and can compete toe to toe against the region's powerhouse like THA and INA despite getting less attention they've won a Silver in the 2019 SEA Games.

our Volleyball national teams badly needs a very competitive MiddleBlockers to compete mano a mano against the World Best.

and as far as finances, our Volleyball landscape had a lot of those nowadays thus naturalizing top class MB's are not a big problem anymore.

just let our domestic leagues be at par with the other top-notch tourneys abroad thus we could lure talents all over because those local volleyball fan boys and girls are one of the best audience according to FIVB.

And they want Filipino coaches to run the team.. They didn't knew how International competition works... De Brito is former Olympic coach... They hate him because their idols were not pick or just bench... Although i would want a Japanese or Korean coach to handle our national team... Also the real challenge for popularity of volleyball is that who will be the next "superstar" after Allysa Valdez? Her game dropped already and already near retirement... Azkals losing popularity after Younghusband Bros retirement and consistently losing international tournaments every year... Well, I think Bella Belen might be push by PNVF to be the "Next" face of volleyball... Like Valdez, She is also admirable...

I couldn't agree with U more bro about the PBA. To be blunt, PBA isn't really a national team friendly league. I mean if you compare the PBA to other pro basketball leagues in Asia like the B-league, CBA, KBL, as well as the pro leagues of Iran & Lebanon, you will realize how national team friendly those leagues are & how disimilar our beloved PBA is. For one, yung PBA calendar isn't synchronized with the FIBA calendar which is something that the pro leagues of China, Japan, Iran, Korea, Lebanon are. I have tackled this subject countless of times na in this forum.

About AJ Edu, I just hope he doesn't end up in the PBA. I feel that players like Kai Sotto, AJ Edu, Dwight Ramos, who are vital components of Gilas should never play in the PBA. They are better off playing elsewhere.

Ang No. 1 problem dyan if AJ Edu plays in the PBA is his availability with the national team.

The PBA just declared a 3-conference format for the next season, in one of the worst timings possible. We have a FIBA tournament coming up in August 2025. August is the starting month of the season.

Let's see if the PBA can compress the season to last until mid-June, because the PBA did a June to April season last 2022-23 with a 3-conference format, plus 12 additional games in the Commissioner's Cup and window adjustments for July/August 2022, November 2022, and February 2023. Thing is, though, that season ended too close to the SEA Games (2 and a half weeks before the SEA Games, to be exact). Good thing we were good enough to win that gold thanks to JB, Newsome, CStand, BGR.

As far as availability is concerned, it wouldn't have been an issue if Brownlee as an all-around NP, Newsome as a defensive combo guard, a possible FIBA-sized 3&D wing in Malonzo, and one of June Mar and Japeth as extra bodies at center were easily replaceable (although Ange can fill the NP and the extra body at center, he's a defensive role guy, not a go-to guy which a lot of people want). A wing defender like Navarro and another extra big like Carino as well, although they're not named to Cone's pool. I would have counted Oftana, but his defense looks like it has regressed and he still needs some good offense in FIBA.

It's just a few players, but those few are or could be big for us.

It seems not all sports Australia is powerhouse, In volleyball they are not that good… Philippine volleyball did what Philippine basketball can’t do against Australia… So we (All Asians) have no right that why Australia is moving to Asian competitions.. in volleyball, Philippines is way better than Australia… atleast for womens… I have no idea about the mens… it just unlucky for Philippines that we are in ASEAN region in volleyball competitions, whereas Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia are tough teams… volleyball competition is tougher in ASEAN than basketball in ASEAN region…

While Gilas is going to prepare briefly for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament (no more than 12 days preparation I think), after the OQT, Gilas team would become idle & would wait for several months before it assembles again to train briefly for the 2nd window of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. On the other hand, most (if not alll) of the national teams all over the world, Asian teams in particular, are going to train, practice & play in international tournaments & pocket tournaments during the June, July & August period.

That's becoz after the OQT, PBA Gilas players are not going to be available kasi ongoing pa din ang PBA. On the other hand the rest of professional basketball leagues all over the world would be in their off season beginning mid-June to mid-September. And this is going to happen in a yearly basis.

You bet that beginning this June up to perhaps August, the national teams of China, Iran, Korea, Lebanon, Japan, Jordan, are going to assemble to train, practice & play international basketball. Yun talaga ang magigung disadvantage natin against the top teams in Asian basketball unless our beloved PBA changes its calendar & synchronize it with the FIBA calendar.

Some national teams are going to play in the 2024 Jones Cup while we aren't sending the Gilas team in that tournament. Strong Group Athletics ang ipapadala natin sa Jones Cup eh.

PBA starts in August. We'll just have to rely on built-in chemistry which we will build in the training time and the windows.

Ngayon, as for availability, I wouldn't complain if the PBA doesn't have our coach or key players for us. Kaso, Cone, a PBA coach, is our head coach, so definitely he'll look to PBA players outside of Kai and AJ (our best FIBA bigs), Dwight (our best FIBA wing), and Quiambao and Tamayo (our best FIBA fours outside of AJ). In addition, although I think Scottie (who is a good point-of-attack defender) and CJ are easily replaceable by the Japan/SoKor guards (in terms of talent, not in skillset; it's close in FIBA), the PBA still has a lot of key pieces we need. A point-of-attack defender in Newsome, bigs in Japeth, June Mar, and Carino, and big wings in Oftana, Malonzo, and especially Navarro.

Who are the guys locally 6’4+ that are great man to man and can guard the perimeter?

I haven't been watching pba much but Navarro and Tuffin.

College is where a few have potential (and big FSAs certainly helps in their development), guys like Koon, Belmonte, Briones, Lazaro and maybe even Puno.

Yeah, these should be the guys we should be focusing on in considering replacements at the wing. We need at least one wing not named Dwight Ramos who can defend in the perimeter. Defense is more valuable than offense at 3 and 5 if you're not a FIBA star at those positions.

Koon, Belmonte, and Chicco are/could be good 3&D players, and they can also handle the ball. Lazaro can handle, but his shooting needs work. I might include Torculas, he could stay in front of perimeter guys.

Malonzo's up-and-down in the defensive end, Oftana's regressed to the point where he gets blown by, Arvin's a defensive liability. Lopez and Policarpio were mentioned to have trouble staying in front of perimeter players too.

Puno's playing like a wing, I saw flashes last season. He might need more reps guarding man-to-man in the perimeter.

I think tagging Boatwright as a defensive liability is a bit too exaggerated. He's definitely not someone who can defend on POA or against wing scorers with his less than ideal athleticism and length (compared to Brownlee and Kouame). But from the limited footage I've seen from his g league stint and on the Mexican league, he has solid feel for the game and has always been wiling to improve defensively and execute schemes. I think he can thrive as a helper or a drop big and will fit nicely with Sotto. If he gets familiar with CTC's defensive schemes, I think he'll be fine and can help us. Not to mention the immense addition he provides offensively.

Instead of a rim protector, what I'd like to see with him are wing defenders with solid length and who can rotate effectively in the perimeter and can defend in transition. We have those on Malonzo, Oftana, Ramos and Newsome. Hopefully Quiambao as well in the future.

My concern for Boatwright however lies more on his rebounding and health as he had consistently dealt with knee injuries since his college days under USC. His rebounding needs to be more consistent although he showed good numbers during his time with SMB. Not really versed in sports medicine so I can't comment much on his injury issues.

When I saw Panathinaikos and Olympiacos clips in this Euroleague, they also had poor defenders at 4 in Konstantinos Mitoglou, Alec Peters, and Filip Petrusev. But they had the best defensive ratings in the Euroleague too. I thought of Bennie's future fit and how to hide him.

Panathinaikos had guards Jerian Grant, Luka Vildoza, Kendrick Nunn, wings in Ioannis Papapetrou and Panagiotis Kalaitzakis, and bigs in Mathias Lessort, Juancho Hernangomez, and Kostas Antetokounmpo to help out. Olympiacos had Thomas Walkup (their best defender), Isaiah Caanan, Kostas Papanikoulau, Giannoulis Larentzakis in the perimeter, and bigs in Moustapha Fall, Nikola Milutinov, and Moses Wright to protect Peters and Petrusev. I did see Mitoglou contribute in blitzing as well.

Basing from them, we need Scottie, Newsome, and Dwight to fight picks like Walkup, Grant, and Vildoza when Bennie's involved in screen plays. Either that, or Bennie helps in blitzing the screen, and others get ready to help him out. Then, we need AJ or Kai next to him. Surrond him with good defenders, and have him execute the scheme.

I should watch more Koon and Briones. Policarpio is interesting, in the filoil he’s showing some playmaking, athleticism. Can’t ignore his wingspan\length but his perimeter defense is bad same with shooting from 3
