Sir Lurks,

I won't argue with that particular word you've posted.

my retired mother a former kasambahay is a Bingo enthusiast.

she've won a decent prize from the recently concluded "Pa Bingo ni Gov".

Assuming Boatwright gets his passport on time for next year's Asia Cup, do you think the coaching staff will go with him or Brownlee? I think they'll go with JB for the Asia Cup and transition to BB for the WCQ 2027.

If they choose Boatwright for the Asia Cup, how will our rotation look assuming everyone is healthy?

Our starting 5 in the recent ACQ:

Scottie - 1
Dwight - 2-3-4
Oftana - 2-3-4
Brownlee - 2-3-4
Kai - 5

Bench:
KQ
Tamayo
Newsome
Perez
Japeth
Malonzo

The only difference I see is:
  • Bennie becoming the starting 4 instead of JB.
  • Junemar replaces Japeth as the backup 5
  • Edu or Kai starts as the 5
  • Abando and Amos included

Bennie's defense is suspect, so he needs protection from AJ and hopefully Kai. He and June Mar should NEVER play together in FIBA games against Jordan, Iran, Lebanon, SoKor, China, and Japan. That would be a defensive disaster.

Speaking of the frontline, after JB retires, only AJ's our reliable defender at 4/5. Kai's not there yet, and Carl's better off next to a defender, although he's improved on switching and is a good post defender. Mason's a defensive liability right now. Thus, with Bennie pegged to replace JB, we need a good defender at 4 or even 5 alongside him.

I think CTC is already set w/ JB for 2025 FIBA Asia cup... He's still on his prime next year, Maybe Boatwright will play for 2025 SEAG... As CTC might rest Brownlee for that event...

I'm seeing Oftana making mistakes and getting blown by on defense in the PBA. Probably a negative effect of him being a go-to guy for TNT.

This worries me. We need him to be good on defense for Gilas, especially since he plays the 3, where defense is especially important. Challenge is balancing offensive responsibility with effectiveness on defense.

No problem for that... He knows his role in Gilas and w/ TNT... He has to help scoring wise there after Mikey left the team...

I agree Oftana has not been known as a good perimeter defender. Actually in Gilas he has been a bit disappointing. He has been ineffective both defensively and offensively. But we'll see. But this is the reason why I think more defensive oriented guys like Navarro should still be considered. Well bad as Navarro may be but I think he is still better defensively than say Arvin Tolentino.

If we're going with Bennie Boatwright as JB's successor at NP, we need as many good perimeter defenders at 1, 2, and 3 as possible, like Will Navarro at the 3, so that we can limit dribble penetration, especially when AJ's not around. Kai has to improve on D as well by November 2025.

I'm going to repeat, I may have a 'defense wins championships' mindset, but historically, when we did well defensively, we did well in meets up to the continental level (FIBA Asia silvers, Asiad gold). When we had a poor defense, we did poorly (2017 and 2021 FIBA Asia Cups, 2021 SEA Games). Heck we gave up 13-31 from three to Indonesia in 2022, and 118 points on 44-66 shooting (16-21 from 3) to SoKor in 2017.

At least for now, we have JB to cover for anyone not named Newsome, Dwight, Scottie, or AJ.

Now as for wings, it's my opinion that if the heavy-minutes wing can't defend, he has to be on the level of at least Samad Nikkah Bahrami in FIBA. Basically, a star. If you're not a star, you have to be able to defend your position (mainly the 3) in at least the continental level; otherwise, that wing should come off the bench or be a situational player. Right now, the only players we have in the pool fitting the defensive wing description are Dwight Ramos and Justin Brownlee. Newsome sana, but I consider him a combo guard who can defend 1-3 at the continental level.

You gonna put every undersize player in big man's role?Dwight is effective as a 2 and can play short minutes at 3 small ball lineup, banging with bigger bodies at a very physical FIBA nowadays will be noth healthy.AJ should always be the starter in 4,and how are they really sure Kai would play if he pursues the NBA dream? Now what put an AJ who's probably maybe around 70% coming off an injury?Junemar and Japeth will be a PNR defense nightmare for Gilas. If not gonna use Ange anymore they should have an NP at least 6'11 or above that can play the perimeter on offense and that can play the 5 whenever Kai is faltering on offense or defense.A young fit Blatche would have been good and better than JB or Boatwright someone similar,no need to naturalize a player that plays the 2/3 position the local and overseas talent and skills are already there and there's plenty nowadays, better to have a natural 4/5 player instead. Both Kai and Aj won't always be available from commitments and health wise.

I actually don't like the idea of playing Dwight Ramos at the 4 spot even for token minutes. For me Dwight is a natural wingman who should be playing mostly at the 3 spot & some minimal minutes at the 2 spot (mejo nababagalan ako sa kanya at the 2-guard spot).

For me, Oftana is the best natural small forward in the current Gilas offense wise. I think Oftana's 3-pt shooting is better than Dwight, though Oftana has yet to demonstrate such capability against high tier opponents in Asian basketball.

Kevin Quiambao had exhibited impressive games playing for Strong Group Athletics in Dubai early this year & it looks like he has very good potential for the national team with his versatility. Offense wise, I think Quiambao is good enough in Asian level basketball playing at both the 3 & 4 positions, but he has to show promise in defending against wingmen.

We would be better suited getting a defensive-minded or two-way 4/5 that can play alongside Kai or AJ, or man the middle when both are out as the NP in my view. Unless we call up Kemark Carino or develop some other bigman who can defend the 4 and 5 at the FIBA continental level, or Kai develops into a big that can defend at a high level (he still has time, but given Boatwright's the successor, he needs to improve quickly on defense), we need a big who can help out on defense.

If PBA knows how to market players to be stars, Bolick is the prime candidate to be the "FACE OF THE LEAGUE" Material... Nevermind if he's not playing for popular teams... As long as PBA knows how to market him, He will be popular.. Make more updates, highlights for him.. He has that swag, impact and can idolize by younger generations...

Dude can't even get a Gilas invite. I'd be very surprised if he ever wins a league award.

He doesnt toe the line. He plays to win. It was obvious he hated it when they were losing games in NP even after starting strong. SMC doesnt like guys who dont toe the line.

Bolick could have been go-to guy material for Gilas, and freed our NP spot for a good interior defender who can play both 4 and 5, can play alongside Kai and AJ. Pero, he's 29 by September, not far off from the ages of Scottie and CJ.

As for his lack of defense, it's easier to hide perimeter players than bigs on defense, especially in our context.

As for lineups, I think our best lineup for the OQT and hopefully the Asia Cup is a lineup with JB, AJ, and Kai on the floor at the same time, and then in stretches, we can play any two of them, stagger their minutes.

Tbh Quiambao is slow defensively, I don’t think he’d be able to guard even European wings.

Why SBP doesn't tap Bolick? Is Bolick burning bridges to the PBA Grandpas before?

It might be time to start considering Javi for Gilas... And maaybe Go if theres not enough big bodies

Go is slow for the 4-spot. Javi GDL, while he has improved significantly in offense in the PBA may not be as good a defender at the wings as compared to Dwight, Oftana or Malonzo.

I agree on Javi's recall to at least the pool. Although he's a bit of a liability on on-ball defense at 3/2, he'll be a 3-point specialist anyway. With a good defender next to him at 2 or 3, Javi will be fine, and we can hide him. He's done this before, although against just Indonesia and Thailand.

Pero if Javi gets recalled, so should a guy like Will Navarro. We need a good defender at 3.

Kung big naman, I think Kemark Carino should be the guy. Averaging over a block per game in the PBA, and has good timing and instincts on defense, which we desperately need in case AJ Edu gets hurt. Can play 4 and 5 too.

What about 6-foot-5 Ken Tuffin as another Gilas prospect at the 3 spot? I think Tuffin's defense is decent. Though offense wise he's not as good as a Dwight Ramos, or Oftana or a Quiambao, I think he could still be a theat offensively for Gilas at least in the Asian level. And I think Tuffin hasn't reached his peak yet. Mag e improve pa yan.

I forgot about Tuffin, sorry. He's a decent defender, and just his shooting and hustle is enough for our offense. We have JB and hopefully Kai for the offensive load, e.

Sakto, kasi we'll be without Malonzo for a while. He'll miss the OQT, but might be back for the November window.

The good thing is that we now have some depth at the 3 spot or the small forward position with Dwight, Oftana, Quiambao, Navarro, Tuffin & Javi GDL.

Then in the pipeline are Mark Belmonte, Chico Briones, Jonel Policarpio, Justin Sanchez & maybe Francis Lopez (I actually have doubts about the potential of this guy).

I think never in the history of Philippine basketball that we had as many good size small forwards (6-foot-5/6-foot-6) as we have right now at our disposal.

What we need now is a top local wing. Our top wing has to be a star in the level of at least Samad Nikkah Bahrami or Fadi El-Khatib, or a good man-to-man defender like what Gabe Norwood was for us.

So far, we just have the man-to-man defenders like Dwight, Navarro, and Tuffin. Hopefully Belmonte, Chicco, Policarpio, Sanchez, and Lopez can become good man-to-man defenders. Don't forget Jacob Bayla, Caelum Harris, and maybe Alex Konov too.
