We have that kind in our team right now in JB. It's hard to find someone else with that skillset.

On Asian level he might be that guy. They can but it's going to he expensive. Having JB is just so convenient for us as not only is he got the skill set but he's also Cone's resident import making his transition a lot easier.

Would a Blatche type of player fit in with this team?

absolutely yes… especially the 2014 Blatche version… he has that height, skills, shooting and can defend … he’s still our barometer for a naturalization spot.. he can be fit alongside Edu, Kai and Junmar.. he’s fit whenever who will be his tandem… he’s a top tier naturalized, not just in Asia, but in the world of basketball overall… his impact make us competitive even at world level…

sadly, after that 2014 WC, slowly, Andray Blatche became so complacent(?) about himself and thought that he is very much indispensable(?) in the program that he doesn't care about his in-take thus making him the walking overload value meal until now. theirs no doubt about his skillset no argument there but the very big question is his desire, dedication and that dawg that we were expecting for our naturalized guy, an anchor both in offense and most importantly in defense.

we badly needed those qualities, that Triple D's.

We can see the difference in terms of dribbling skills between these young players Patrick Perez, Alex Pachuki, Femi Edu and the likes of Francis Lopez & Jamie Malonzo. Its obvious that Perez & his fellow young ballers have better handles than Lopez & Malonzo. I think much factor could be the different orientation of the two groups - Perez, Pachuki & Femi Edu have played as wingmen from the onset while Lopez & Malonzo played as 4 since they started playing the sport. You can see from the way Malonzo & Lopez dribble the basketball na merong awkwardness eh, especially dribbling thru traffic. On the other hand, with F. Edu, Pachuki & Perez, smooth talaga when they dribble the ball even in traffic.

You can see that Femi Edu & company handle the ball like 6-foot-1/6-foot-2 PBA wings. To think that Edu, Perez & Pachuki are 6-foot-5/6-foot-6 wings.

A lot of our lineup problems will be solved if SBP lobbied for local status for Ange Kouame. Him being a local opens up so many possibilities for tweaking the lineup, making Gilas more versatile. But we all know Al Panlilio is an imbecile.

1st step is for the PBA to consider him a local. jusmio SBP and PBA wont do this. (in essence why would FIBA consider him as a local if his own domestic league counts him as a foreigner)

Exactly. If Ange is a local, we won't need to worry too much about our center position once June Mar retires, or our defensive anchor if AJ is injured, and we can focus on getting a go-to guy as our NP.

It could be argued that Ange could even be an upgrade, if ever

Yeah, becoz he & AJ Edu (who is injury prone) are the only 6-foot-10 & above players we have who are mobile & good rim protectors. We all know that Kai Sotto has suspect laterals.

Kai has slow laterals, and we do not have enough mobile defensive fours to protect him. We need a four in the mold of AJ or Ping, or even 2021 Justine Baltazar.

I think it’s dependent on the competition, for some teams in Asia and Europe, the slow laterals I think won’t be so bad since teams might not have the fast twitch personnel to take advantage but it does become a problem against American and Africa teams.

I say Heading should be with the current Gilas team handled by coach Tim Cone. I say, he's the best shooting guard in Philippine basketball right now. Though this is just NBL-1 he's playing which is actually the division 2 pro league of Australia, I think the level of competition in this league isn't below par. The good thing about Heading is that, though he is a natural shooter, he can also slash to the basket & can also finish the break. Also, he can also play as a combo guard as what he had displayed playing with Strong Group Athletics in Dubai last January.

Once Newsome retires, Heading should be one of the first names in consideration to replace him. Showed decent man-to-man D in Dubai, though he's not the same defender that Newsome is (let's be real, no one outside of prime Chris Ross is).

Or at the very least, put Heading in as a reserve.

Speaking of Newsome, I kinda a feel panghihinayang that Newsome is already 34. How I wish he is only 27 or 28. He is definitely our best defender at the 2-guard spot.

played decent defense last night.. thought he assist more last night but manage to register 4 assists as he leads the scoring for the defending NBL-1 central champs

*Note: NBL1 is semi pro league here in australia

Obviously, Heading will play a different role in team Pinas. Newsome’s best skill at the highest level is his defense. Heading’s is his shooting. Two entirely different roles. Heading’s second best trait is he is basically a decent all around player. Decent handles to be a 1 for a bit. Decent vision. Even decent defense for 1 and 2 and at times even against SF. If there is a hole in his game it his bad FTs. For a high 3 FG shooter he is a bad FT shooter. It worked against him in the Dubai finals. He missed 2 FTs IRC in the end game. Although he made a 3, he was reluctant to drive it in the end game. Maybe because he just missed 2 FTs earlier.

Took us a while i guess to realise the process of making a once ineligible player, eligible. Newsome for his part kinda just settled on his level on the PBA, took a couple of stints in FIBA for him to increase his level of play

Newsome’s exemption took a long time to be granted. Same as Greg. So it’s a fools errand to rely our program on exemptions when it only has come when our players are past 30. Fiba is already gettinh flak from some countries for NPs. They won’t be handing out exemptions easily for in-prime players. The direction is clear. Have your home growns develop or make sure your foreign growns or NPs have a passport early, before they are 16.

Bennie Boatwright has agreed to be a naturalization candidate.

https://www.spin.ph/basketball/fiba...rt-to-be-naturalized-for-gilas-a1374-20240330

When I saw him play in the PBA, he looked like a defensive liability. He was getting blown by and scored on by Tony Bishop, and isn't much of a defensive presence near the basket. That's the biggest concern I have, our defense.

If Boatwright's our NP, we need a good defensive center or 4 to pair with him, considering that he's a defensive liability. That means AJ's the only reasonable big we have that can pair with the guy. Kai's not there yet on defense, neither are Carl and Quiambao.

Either that, or we hope his and our team's offense compensates to the point where his defensive concerns (especially when paired with Kai and Carl) are negligible.
