Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Remy's stats in Greece are far from impressive though. Considering he is part of a weak team, he only gets 13min a game.

Putting things into perspective, if he can be considered a local...we've never had a local win a D1 championship as a key player and we barely have locals playing in euro leagues. Even papa Dwight never sniffed those accomplishments and he is doing well in Gilas.

Sir Jams,

Yup.

as for Remy Martin, if indeed he obtained his docs a few weeks or a few months after his 16th birthday but not yet on his 17th birthday, I think he has a very strong chance to be exempted much earlier compared to others who only gotten their respective passport when they are already in the 20's.

I think RM are in the same situation with Jayden Harper who also obtained(?) his PH Passport after a few weeks after his 16th birthday but was already exempted as per FIBA's official website.

same issue with Chris Koon, Sean Alter, Zav Lucero, Michael Philips, Kai Ballugay among others who also obtained their respective docs after their 16th birthday but not yet on their 20's but also had a strong chance to be exempted much faster hopefully it could in the next cycle from 2027 to 2032 WC.

as for the likes of Perkins(?),BGR, Barefiled, Datu, Luis Villegas, Laput among others well who only obtained when they've already in their early 20's but hopefully it's very much possible for the next cycle as well FOR AS LONG AS THEY ARE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN THE DOMESTIC LEAGUE, had a permanent address, a business, a family, votes here among others for the next 8 to 10 years. that's the key.

Is it really already certain or almost certain that Jayden Harper is FIBA eligible? The way I see it seems everything is still a bit blurred about Jayden Harper's FIBA eligibility.

He'd be a good candidate as Newsome's successor. Sacrifices some defense (though he defended well man-to-man in the Dubai tournament), but can shoot well and provides another ballhandler and initiator.

Heading's defense isn't in the same level as Newsome but he is obviously a better shooter than Newsome I'm actually impressed with how Heading performed in Dubai. I mean for someone who was out of competitive basketball for quite some time, I think he did better than everyone expected. He also did good enough playing some point guard role.

Yes he is a different player from Newsome. His best skill is outside shooting. But he is fundamentally sound everywhere else that he can a lot of things. Decent defender. Decent initiator.

I have both abando and tuffin over heading as newsome replacement. Abando has the physical tools and motor to be a defender on the same level of newsome while tuffin is a similar shooter to heading but taller (higher release point = harder to close out on, better rebounder) and more willing and versatile as a defender.

The fajardo replacement is trickier, in my opinion. For me, best candidates are chiu and balti. Decision between the 2 would probably depend on the brownlee replacement, which in turn could depend on the development of our wing guys (ramos, tamayo, quiambao, malonzo, oftana).

Speaking of Ken Tuffin, how do U rate his defensive skills? Is his defense within the level that of a Gabe Norwood? I like to use Gabe as a benchmark becoz obviously he is the most successful wing defender of our national team in more than 10 years.

I think offensively when compared to Gabe, Tuffin has better offensive skills & is more confident of his offensive capabilities. Gabe however is quicker, more athletic & has better handles than Tuffin.

Sir Jams,

I just rely on the official FIBA website and a few legit sources wherein I'm a regular viewer unless you can provide me another official link.

kindly share it to us.

I always stand to be corrected.

thank you.

Ah ok. I saw that link before. I've been thinking maybe its just an error made by FIBA. Of course I hope it isn't an error & Jayden Harper is really 100% FIBA eligible.

Gabe definitely is a far better defender. What i like about the limited footage i've seen of tuffin is that he is a willing defender (fights on screens, keeps his man in front, etc) but has limited physical tools. Tuffin with his height (6'4, 6'5) is better suited for a switching defense compared to the smaller Heading who can only defend small guards.

JB's replacement should also depend on how Kai develops defensively, and AJ's and Kai's health. If AJ or Kai still has issues with health by 2025, we will need either Ange (even as Kai's backup) or a two-way PF who can play the 5.

If we have three centers (or three players who can play center in FIBA), Kai develops into an anchor, and AJ and Kai are good health-wise, we could go for a two-way go-to guy at the 3/4.

If there is anyone heading will replace in gilas, its perez. Its hard to replace anyone in this lineup barring any injuries or dip in performance due to old age. Any replacement must duplicate or surpass what these 12 of CTC can give.

Can balti be better in skills than tamayo or kq?
Can heading be a better energy guy off the bench than perez?
Can bolick be a better defender and hustle guy than scottie?
Can kouame be a better 3 level scorer and a go to guy than brownlee?

This CTC 12 is the best we have right now collectively

I used the term "successor" because I think Newsome will be replaced only upon injury or NT retirement. I'll use that as a term for anyone on this group except maybe Perez, who still has value in his hustle and energy, even when he's off. Still useful, just need a wing defender and rim protector alongside him when he gambles on steals or gets lost on D.

And I agree, no one here can be easily replaced. Injury or NT retirement lang.

I can think of a different team that can be better than this team. It is moot though. In any case this team is dependent on the development of one person and that is Kai. JB will probably not be our NP 4 years from now. Perez has been a nonentity in the high levels after his first WC. Scottie has not been impressive in the high levels as well. Edu we all know can only be reiled upon in limited minutes. It is up to Kai to man the middle against the high levels. That is actually the main question that the answer will tell if TCs main 12 will be kept or have drastic changes like an addition of a center NP.

Agree with all your points. Imo, best candidate for our next NP is a 3-4 wing with solid shooting who can play small ball 5 on defense. Unfortunately, we dont have a prospect under this archetype.

We have that kind in our team right now in JB. It's hard to find someone else with that skillset.

ron harper jr or even dylan harper if they can pry him away from usa basketball. i could be wrong but they apparently have philippine passports already but got them after they turned 16.

imaging if those 2 were eligible as locals

Jimmy Butler

And there’s your problem. JB's quality is basically NBA level and it’s hard to find that without deep pockets.
