Guys, is point guard Alec Stockton of Converge worth a consideration for Gilas, maybe not now but perhaps next year?

He has been scoring well for Converge so far this conference. But how is Stockton's playmaking?

At 6-foot-2, he obviously is a good size point guard & he's athletic. I think he was known as a decent defender in college playing for FEU.

Yes. A is 6'2 PG is rare for us and he has good mobility on offense and defense. However, his handles are iffy. It was his consecutive turnovers that lost a game for them where they led by 20.

That's a red flag right there. A point guard with shaky handles won't be a good national team prospect. Kung sa PBA level shaky na yung handles nya, then what more in the higher level FIBA game.

It would be somewhat tolerable if Stockton is just 21 or 22 yrs of age (there is time/chance to improve his handles), problem is he is about to turn 26 already.

If coach Tim Cone described Mason Amos as a 6-foot-7 Allan Caidic, maybe if he sees Alex Konov's game, coach Tim will describe Konov as a 6-foot-7 Bogs Adornado.

Konov seems to have a quick release on his shots.

He does have a quick release and shoots in one motion. Hard to close out on that. Idk about his shooting percentages, but in time I believe he’s poised to be an elite shooter. I hope he gets a call up for the Gilas pool sooner than later.

Guys, is Bolick really a good playmaker or he is just a point guard with such a lethal offensive game? Becoz if Bolick isn't really a good playmaker then I think he's not the point guard we are looking for for Gilas.

There are point guards kasi who are/were excellent playmakers but isn't/wasn't really scoring threats (Hector Calma, Dindo Pumaren). And there are those who are excellent playmakers & legit scoring threats like Johnny Abarrientos & Jimmy Alapag.

I think it's really a great luxury having a point guard who is a very good playmaker & dangerous scoring threat as well. It has a synergistic effect.

He's an underrated playmaker IMO. He attracts defenses which often leads to an open teammate even if he doesn't get credited for the assist. Ideally he comes off the bench. Well ideally Scottie too moves to the bench but we don't have anyone better so he's starting by default

Panopio's stats at Cal State-Bakersfield isn't impressive. But since he's young, I want to give him a try. There are players who are late bloomers. Hope Panopio would be one of them.

IRC he had some problems with the physicality of the Fiba game in the U16 (U18?). It might have been the reason a shorter and less talented Abadiano eventually had more minutes than him IRC.

Didn't he joined the team late and had sporadic minutes, couldn't get into rhythm? To be honest our shoot first PGs annoyed the hell out of me in the both youth tournaments

if you check the current gilas “12” 4 players are from the same youth batch (kai, edu, carl and kquiam) though kquiam didn’t play sa youth team with them.. that batch could be our golden generation.. once dave ildefonso and panopio got called up in the future it will be half from that age group..

I just wish that grassroots development will focus on conditioning, laterals, handles, dribbling and shooting at a young age regardless of the height. Sad that the tallest kid in the community is the de facto center and is taught how to play the post.

“Pwede sana siya, but it never panned out,” Reyes said.

This isn't accurate as the 'Hagop Rule" (passport before 16th birthday rule) was imposed during the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship in which Gilas players Marcio Lassiter & Chris Lutz were bared from playing for Gilas in the 1st few games of that tournament. Lassiter & Lutz were later allowed to play in the Gilas next games due to the intervention of the late FIBA Sec. General Patrick Bauman.

that's the challenge of those hafus like Holt, QMB, the Harpers among others during that time they don't have the time, the patience(???) to process the docs personally because they also had other priorities just like any other pinoy family in the states.

paperworks and legworks will certainly eat some time, money and lot's of patience to be able to secure one.

if only Fil Nation Select was establish much earlier, maybe just maybe Clarkson, Jalen Green and Hepa may had a chance to be eligible locally.

Well prior to the 16th birthdays of Holt & Clarkson, "Hagop Rule" was not yet implemented.

But I think when Melora-Brown, Jalen Green, Hepa. Remy Martin were in their 15 or 14 yrs, Hagop Rule was already there. From what I heard Martin obtained his Philippine passport after he just turned 16, so sayang talaga.

But I think we have gotten things done na as far as securing Philippine passports for foreign based Pinoy players prior to their 16th birthday in recent years.

As I've mentioned in the other thread, I feel future looks bright for our young foreign based or half-breed Pinoy players with the likes of Femi Edu, Patrick Perez, Caelum Harris, Chase Robertson & Tyler Bailey being FIBA eligible players for Gilas. These kids are natural wingmen and are in the 6-foot-5/6-foot-6 category. If these players will turn out to be serviceable for our senior Gilas team in 4 to 5 years time, then I think it would be unprecedented for a Phlippine national team having these many good size wingmen.

I don't think that was the problem he played in Euro type basketball against rough Italian players,it was a matter of training time,he's almost always late coming in from Europe.He has good handles and the ball doesn't stay in his hands long,as soon as he crosses the line he's either going to shoot or make those quick pass to the cutting guy,that's his bread and butter,initiate the play as soon as possible.

This is kind of what is happening with him in his current team. Their best player is also a PG and has high usage. Panopio has only been getting chances when the guy is out or in foul trouble.

I think Panopio needs to work on his aggressiveness (too unselfish). He tends to give way to more aggressive (even if they're lower quality) teammates.

The bright side is, even with limited touches, he has been shooting 3s well (47% for the season).

Yup.

as for Remy Martin, if indeed he obtained his docs a few weeks or a few months after his 16th birthday but not yet on his 17th birthday, I think he has a very strong chance to be exempted much earlier compared to others who only gotten their respective passport when they are already in the 20's.

I think RM are in the same situation with Jayden Harper who also obtained(?) his PH Passport after a few weeks after his 16th birthday but was already exempted as per FIBA's official website.

same issue with Chris Koon, Sean Alter, Zav Lucero, Michael Philips, Kai Ballugay among others who also obtained their respective docs after their 16th birthday but not yet on their 20's but also had a strong chance to be exempted much faster hopefully it could in the next cycle from 2027 to 2032 WC.

as for the likes of Perkins(?),BGR, Barefiled, Datu, Luis Villegas, Laput among others well who only obtained when they've already in their early 20's but hopefully it's very much possible for the next cycle as well FOR AS LONG AS THEY ARE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN THE DOMESTIC LEAGUE, had a permanent address, a business, a family, votes here among others for the next 8 to 10 years. that's the key.

Remy should really have a strong case for exemption. Up to now, he has been showing a strong bond with his Pinoy roots. He recently set-up a foundation and a basketball training program for Pinoy youth.

Remy's stats in Greece are far from impressive though. Considering he is part of a weak team, he only gets 13min a game.
