Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

We may have depth advantage against that Iran team, but that team had the added advantage of cohesion and chemistry. That team played together from teenage years until their retirement.

I've been stressing this forever, the next batch after this current Gilas batch where there are guys still in their teenage years can be special. Our 17-23 year old (which will have Kai, Edu, KQ and Carl as their leaders and probably throw in Dwight as the veteran) has the potential to be our golden generation.

There should be a parallel program to develop this batch with a 10-year plan. That's how you build a golden generation team like Iran.

Agreed. At least put guys like Bahay, Mason, Lopez, Caelum, Konov, Panopio (who's 24), Demisana, Gagate, and Pablo in a reserve team, whether B or C, or a separate U23 team to compete in Jones Cup like tournaments if invited.

Or alternatively, have a plan to slowly integrate younger players with high upside into the seniors.

I'm more for having a U23 team playing together asap. Throw them into the fire against vastly superior teams and let them lose now...it is a 10-year plan. The key is have them continuously developing together asap.

Have this in parallel with the current Gilas team.

Im actually intrigued at the possibility of Christian David being eligible for the national team. He is a tall 3 and D wing that could really fortify our wing rotation. And his recent play shows that he is legit and seems to have recovered from his injuries.

Only period we can call up our best U23 players to llay together is in the June to August period, which is Jones Cup season or FIBA tournament season in odd-numbered years. We will need to synchronize their sked.

Question my bros: Who will sponsor your proposed Gilas U-23 cadet team/pool?

No doubt about that, having a U-23 developmental team is a brilliant idea. I like it as much as most posters here do.

Logistics will be difficult as always. But that's supposed to be how golden generations are, it's not something you can pull off anytime. If it's a 10-year plan, just having the team together once in a while (one short tournament a year) is okay. Just look at the chemistry between Kai and Edu. They've just been together for a short time as teenagers, but the chemistry is there. Other countries have pulled it off, study how they did it.

For funding, it's same story as always, we will always be lacking. But again, there are ways if guys will be willing to put the effort to figure it out. Just look at SGA and how they bankroll their team. Then you have the amount spent for Clarkson, that type of spending could go a long way. There's also many youth teams who use crowd funding and are able to travel the world to compete. Then there is merchandising. There are many ways.

Kai's impact will be immense on young local bigs. Not just gilas. No local center has ever intimidated like him on both offense and defense. He need not even dominate like rhe prime jabbar -- 3/4 of what young jabbar contributes is definitely within kaiju's territory.

Now, you can tell and challenge the likes of gagate or demisana that they are mere 6'8-6'9 players, so how come they cannot move, dribble and jump quicker, faster and more explosively than kai? In the nba, even muscled bigs like giannis and shaq can go coast to coast on a dribble drive attack if they want to.

The true value of kai is he comoletely redefined the best qualities of a pinoy big. He has none of the international weaknesses of fajardo, aguilar and slaughter.

Speaking of which, that once in a while & one short tournament a year that you're referring to would be during the FIBA or international tournament season which is during the June, July, August & September, guess who would be the available national team prospects during that period?

Of course its obvious they our players playing in the B-league, KBL & the college players. With regards to our beloved PBA players' availability in that period, let's just pray nalang that they would be available.

This I say, if our Gilas team/pool gets to train/practice & play FIBA or international tournaments (like Jones Cup, others) every year during the June to September period, then I'm confident we can gain or achieve the needed cohesion/chemistry for a national team in a 4-year cycle. If Gilas can hold a 3-week or better a 1-month training camp every year (during the June to September period), then that is good enough already for the program.

The golden batch are aged 17-23...those who are pros are overseas, while majority which is still in school have a high probability of getting overseas offers. That's basically a good litmus test, overseas teams should want the player.

That's why I hope that most of our Gilas potential players now playing college or even high school basketball don't end up playing in the PBA. Play everywhere wag lang sa PBA (Of course I don't want them playing in the MPBL either, which would even be worse. It would be almost like playing in inter-barangay level basketball).

This I say, unless the PBA modifies its calendar, it would really be a hindrance to the progress of our national team. Of course this is not to say that PBA is no help for the national team. We acknowledge that PBA is a good source of our national players ever since.

Any chance for Christian David to Gilas as a local?
Looks legit despite the injuries he had..Noticeably taller than Oftana so the 6'6 listing is spot on. More importantly he moves like a natural wing and in local term "my laro" whenever you see a new player play for the 1st time in person

Hagop ineligible right? IRC the family didn't want to be involved with Gilas when he was still young enough to be part of the team.

Yeah.
And if in case he gets FIBA excemption, I doubt about his willingness to play for flag & country.
I would rather try Kai Balungay instead of him.

And we're not exactly wanting in prospects and players in David's position. We have Navarro, Arvin, Lopez, Harris, Konov, and Bayla waiting in the wings (pun intended). Hopefully, the guys in the U17 and U18 this year have prospects too.

While these players are FIBA ineligible, they elevate the level of game in the PBA - Standhardinger, Tautuaa, BGR, Stephen Holt, Perkins, Datu, Villegas, Lucero, Munzon, Sean Anthony, Christian David, Laput.

arvin is a fools gold player...Tim cant even trust him in asain games lineup..
Well, in FIBA, Oftana and Navarro are better fits at the wing dye to their defense.

At the wing, I feel defense is more important than scoring, unless you're as explosive as a JB.

Pinoy FIBA eligible players falling in the 17-year old to 23-year old category includes Kiefer Alas, Caelum Harris, Alex Konov, Jacob Bayla, Mason Amos, Seven Gagate, Luis Pablo, Andy Gemao, Femi Edu, Tamayo, Kai Sotto, Quiambao, Mark Belmonte, Chico Briones, Lopez, Escamis & other young Fil-foreign players out there waiting to be discovered.
