Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

I can't wait for Kai to be matched up with the top centers of Asian basketball like Al Dwairi of Jordan (Kai actually had played against him in 2022), Saudi Arabia's Mohammed Alsuwailem, China's Zhou Qi & Wang Zhelin & the centers of New Zealand.

That would be the real test for Kai.

Quinito suggests Baltazar, Heading, Abando and Tolentino as inclusions to the Cone's Gilas core

https://www.philstar.com/sports/2024/02/29/2336868/four-gilas

Arvin can shoot and create his own shot. However, his man defense for the wing is an issue (at SF, man defense is vital in the NBA), although his help defense is good.

Heading and Abando could provide shooting, and both showed competent man defense at 2.

But the real need is at center. Kai, AJ, and June Mar have had issues with health. We need a reserve just in case so we don't have to unretire Japeth. Erram's retired, Almazan and Sangalang are above 30 and underskilled. So, Carino and maybe Greg are the ones we could call up for defensive presence.

PBA draft might schedule after OQT, and new season might schedule after Olympics… So Tamayo needs to play elsewhere before June Gilas session… Even Brownlee had to play overseas just to be in shape in June… If no overseas offers, then playing MPBL is better than being Jobless, just to be in shape… 4 months of not playing competitive basketball will stop his progress…

This is a very uninformed opinion.

The best time for a player to work on aspects (weaknesses) of their game and improve is during the offseason. The most efficient way to develop a specific skill, whether it be ball-handing, shooting or whatever is by training on it exclusively one at a time. European players would practice left-handed bounce passes for a whole week. That is how you master a skill.

It's also the best time to work on your body/athleticism because your body can recover properly and not be stressed by games.

That's why the best NBA players continually evolve, they would suddenly have an added skill every new season or their bodies improve. They worked on it in the offseason.

Pinoy players in general just play games and never devote enough time to training/practice/working out...and it shows.

suddenly we have a scarcity of Centers that are FIBA competitive,

SBP better lobby for that Ange exemption, or naturalize someone on the same caliber as 2014 Blatche. JB wont cut it against Asia's elite (what more against OQT euro-latin am teams)

And also look at how our young centers like Demisana and Gagate are developing, invite them to Gilas practices so they can be taught.

That's why I said it's ridiculous when someone claimed that we have an abundance of international players that we can parade 2-3 teams if we wanted to.

We lack bigs and we lack elite shooters.

In my opinion, only FIBA-level bigs are the following:

PF: Tamayo, AJ
C: Kai, AJ, Ange (NP), June Mar

I didn't count Quiambao, because there's some hope that he can competently transition to the wing. I didn't count Japeth because he's retired.

As for shooters, it's just Heading and Parks so far. I need to see something more from Carl, Oftana, and Malonzo. We need to develop that skill more as well.

In 4 months? I get it if it is 1 month rest, But 4 long months? Even NBA players just doing their off season workouts a month or two before the season started... Even Brownlee will play overseas to continue his conditioning.. Playing competitive basketball is much better than just doing workouts... Kai did this before and it result it negatively...

So the Argument of Adding pool players for Gilas is already settled... Hope no more other arguments of "Where is ______" , Why him" Like that... Those 4 are Best that we can pick for Gilas moving forward....

I want to see Oftana, Quiambao & Malonzo's mettle against teams like Lebanon, Jordan, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Iran. If I remember it correctly, Oftana didn't score well against Jordan in the championship game of last year's Asian Games.

So you honestly believe Kobe, Steph, Giannis, etc just workouts a month or two before the season especially when they were young and still developing? Of course a lot of the average guys treat the offseason mostly as vacation...and that is why they are average.

Kai only had meaningful offseason training before the nba draft he joined. How do we know if he would be better if he just played instead? If he played more games instead of working out... would it have fixed his weaknesses like lateral speed, strength and motor?

So do you believe also that Brownlee just do workouts instead than playing? Tamayo needs more playing reps especially he was just being a benchwarmer in his stint in Ryukyu.. Playing competitive basketball will get his much needed exposure and knowledge playing on the court, especially that his development was stunt in his B League stint.. He was awful against HK, although played decently against Taipei... That says a lot for him, If there is any offers abroad, atleast short term then grab it already... There is time for that workouts.. But for Tamayo, He badly needs playing competitive basketball to feel what he lost during his bench stint w/ Ryukyu... I'm sure even CTC will advise him to play than just do workouts...

Oftana was useful as a rebounder, hustle guy, and defender in the Asiad, which are very desirable in our SF's.

However, we need him to shoot well in FIBA, since Scottie, Newsome, Dwight, and CJ are erratic shooters. The Taiwan game should be a start.

I remember a video featuring Magic Johnson saying how he would work on improving specific skills during the NBA off-season knowing that his rival Larry Bird would be doing the same. I believe that Magic & Bird would just take a one month rest after an NBA season, then afterwards they will spend about a month & a half polishing some specific skills, then the remaining 1 month & a half would be spent joining their respective teams to prepare for the upcoming season. NBA off season is 4 months, right?

I believe that NBA greats like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Hakeem Olajuwon, Lebron James, Step Curry, Kevin Durant, have done or are doing the same.

I understand Metta's sentiment about most Pinoy players not able to improve specific skills as they don't have the luxury of having a long off-season. Well, its common knowledge that PBA off-season is no more than 2 months. Eh parang wala na ngang off season yan because about a month before the opening of the next PBA season, players will back for training camps of their respective teams.

in tim cone things parks handles issue wouldnt be an issue as he will not need to slash just to attract the defense and get out traingel will make him pass on the nearer guy whenever the defense sag him...

Although the issue with Parks is that he has this bebelife..

For the team the issue for me if there is one is guard shooting, a tall pg and a pure pg..because Justin is a cheat code.. he addresses the issue every now and then hehe

Oh, yeah, I forgot JB in the shooters list. Man, he really solves a lot of our needs.

Brownlee is 35 years old, he's not going to develop any more skill. Past-prime guys just need to stay in shape. It is more essential for young and still developing.

Tamayo was playing out of position. This is in fact a good example of how just playing can be detrimental, he needs to refrain from playing center and develop more perimeter skills. Work on his quickness and handles. Using that argument, CJ has been playing plenty of basketball and is reigning MVP, how did that work out for him with Gilas?

But of course you will just continue to use arguments based on your own theoretical self analysis.

NBA have 4 month off season, But they start their training camp a month before NBA season starts... Tamayo badly needs playing reps after stucking at the bench for Ryukyu in his stint in Japan... I understand the role of having off season training but his problem is not his skills, His confidence are not high for now... Not all will just improve by workouts, The feel of game is lack for him.. He needs to get back his confidence.. And the only way is to play competitive basketball... He's already outplayed by his co teammate Kevin Quiambao plus that not good performance vs lowly Hong Kong, suggest that he needs to get his confidence back...

This is not a secret, most of the greats do this. Kobe said he attributes his 81-point game to the offseason work he did prior, mainly on his conditioning. Guys like Kawhi developed shooting in the offseason, Giannis worked on his body and athleticism, Steph strengthened his lower body to fix his ankle problems, and the list goes on. And a lot of these type of guys are champions, because they get rid of their weaknesses.

This is especially the youth hoops culture in Europe...they will practice/train for the whole week and only have one game in the weekend. A reason why Euros are so skilled.
