Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Japan has an NP center right? NZ also has a tall center? Kai seems to have improved. But yes 6’5-6’6 centers are not a true test.

It's like Junmar Fajardo registering 25 pts. & 15 rebounds against 6-foot-6 local centers of a PBA team. There's not much to brag about.

Kai is getting tbis numbers innthe same number of touches in yokohama and judging with hawkinson.. he can be handy but kai can be productive if he post up alaska man..we just need browblee or edu handle him in box out on offensive end..

al dwairi already outplayed kai like 2 years ago, chot had to put ange & japeth on dwairi instead

I imagine already Kai playing in the PBA, those Taiwanese and HK bigs are same level as Belga, Erram, Sanggalang, etc… and we saw Kai dominates them… If he plays here, he can match easily Junmar’s achievements since no one in the PBA can match his size, skills and he’s better defender than Junmar… He might average 28 pts, 16 rebs, 7 assist and 5 blocks per game in the PBA… That’s too easy for Kai…

For Saudi Arabia its 6-foot-11 Mohammed Alsuwailem, for Jordan its 7-foot Ahmad Al Dwairi (whom Ange Kouame outplayed in the championship game of last year's Asian Games).

The 4 best local Asian bigs as of today are Zhou Qi , Wang Zhelin, Muhammad Al Suwailem and Ahmed Al Dwairi… Zhou Qi is fragile and always injured, Wang Zhelin is a bust in FIBA competitions, Al Suwailem is slow defending faster bigs, Sometimes Nestor Garcia pull him out when he is facing faster players… Al Dwairi is the legit opponent of Kai here in Asia… other notable bigs are Kim Jung Kyu of Korea, Jakrawan of Thailand, Al Khafaji of Iraq, Hu Juqiu and Yang Hansen of China….

Can't really say they're better than Belga etc but I remember Billymams holding Douthit's injured wrist, tall guys getting roughed up and definitely more physical than the NBL. They'd make it hard for Kai or at least make him think twice about humiliating them. Even JF had to bulk up to be more effective in the PBA

The problem will be how will Belga, Erram or Sanggalang defend Kai when he taking perimeter shots… Kai has also face up game, Junmar just only develop his midrange lately…. He can just out shoot Belga and east two points… Of course they can be physical on Kai to erase the discrepancy on height advantage… but the thing Kai has basketball IQ when he will attack or outsmarting his opponent…

Its a commonly used strategy to get the opposing big out in the perimeter because more often than not, guards can always blow by bigs gurading them in the perimeter. When kai was matched up against HK guards in the perimeter, I actually blame our defensive strategy. Kai should not be in the position to be outside the paint in defense

That's not his strong point in defense, just too slow to recover and once the guards, got his rhytmn down on the paint they start attacking the rim successfully. It will be interesting too in the Olympic Qualifier how he's gonna fare against real big men that are mobile and will get in his face, would he wilt if he gets dunked on and yelled at after a few times or just take the beating and make the best of it.

The olympics require only that players are philippine passport holders. So aside from our local pinoy bigs who didnt play in the asian cup qualifiers, we can use, maybe, 4 current nba players during the oqt. Can anyone clarify the player eligibility requirements for the oqt -- which technically is above the fiba tournaments -- in july 2024? Thanks.

Btw, there should be no big issue with local/np players being replaced by proven nba talents. There will also be no shortage of fiba and other tournaments where local nt candidates can sharpen their saws.

I think PBA bigs like Belga, Tautuaa, Sanggalang, Almazan, BGR, etc. play more physical basketball than those Taiwanese bigs. Skills-wise, maybe its just about even between the PBA bigs & the Taiwanese bigs, but a difference in physicality can make a significant difference.

Yes… but Kai has more experience playing bigger than them, especially the final match of Yokohama against Chiba that has 3 world imports but Kai still doing double double … It’s a barbecue chicken for him playing against those players

Theoretically who ar ethe passport players

Ron harper jr,, Jalen Green , Jordan Clarkson.. what we need is a pount guard.. Jalen's transition to pg isnt in full swing yet

Assuming this is true...

For now Remy Martin, Barefield and even Brickman could audition.

Bakits with the Billy Manzano breakdown.

At first I was really confused why just 12 players.. why not at least 15 players so that we could have options, whether because of injuries or bad plays or fit.. but now I get it and it is really the genius of Tim Cone... remember this is a 4 year journey.. it is not just a tournament by tournament thing.. this is a 4 YEAR THING let me emphasize that...

with only 12 players (of course there can be exemptions whether injury or really bad fit), they will learn to like each other and play with each other every single tournament.. and with that way, each player can learn and know what to do and improve on in FIBA play because they will have the opportunity to play again.. eh if we have a pool of players tapos palit ng palit every single tournament, how will you apply what you learned if next tournament you will be replaced dba? in this way, continuity talaga.. they will learn to be a team for 4 years.. pagdating ng 2027 World Cup team na team na sila of course with a much better naturalized player..

BUT, I think SBP needs to develop another team.. a much younger team with just a sprinkle or splash of veterans.. this will be the definitive TEAM B for the other tournaments of importance as well e.g. SEA Games, Jones Cup, heck even Asian Games.. this will make sure these Team B players will have the proper exposure to FIBA Play and this is where TEAM A will get the replacement if NEEDED..

iba pa ang Under 19, 17, etc age group... ibang handler and team yan... ung Team B will be Seniors pa ren just Team B..

Short of having nba players, kouame for any injured edu/ aguilar/ fajardo, and, abando/ amos for malonzo or any unavailable regular nt players, will be more than fine in battles against any top20 fiba teams.

Getting m phillips and sean alter as local younger power forwards will add both power and stability to the frontline in all fiba tournaments. Getting laput as a local and a serviceable asian battle center is also possible, as his sister really looks like a pinay, though an oversized one.

But at the end of the day, it is always about quality coaching. You get a great pinoy nt coach like cone if he has very good common sense, and refuses to be st*pid.

The mean core is the 12 guys the team will build into..they will plug ins but definitely just role players.(pangumpleto).

The team B will be led by Tamayo Quiambao, Kouame and the final cuts (amos). Tim already envisioned for Kai to be not available all the time..

The SGA will do their dubai thing and they will be supplanted b our top upung prospects who have no pro contract..

Believe it or not 2019-2023 windows was really for rebuilding as due to the suspension the Blatche jason Castro, Romeo, ,matthew wright, Pogoy, fajardo, Aguilar, jalalaon, Ravena(2 years) core was disbanded unexpectedly resulting on that disastrous 2019 fiba world cup..
