Cone says LA Olympics is the ultimate goal and his term is "year to year"

Though SBP has lined up a four-year program, Cone said his term as Gilas coach is year-to-year. He has put together a 12-man team that he intends to keep for the next four years, but is open to minor tweaks throughout the build-up.

Part of the build-up for the long term is the coming first window of the Fiba Asia Cup 2025 qualifiers where Gilas Pilipinas will face Hong Kong on February 22 and Chinese Taipei on February 25.

But ultimately, in the fourth year, we want to be playing in the Qatar World Cup. We have to qualify first but we want to be playing in the Qatar World Cup and we want to be finishing first in Asia, and get that berth in the LA Olympics. That’s been clear to me. That’s the goal of the SBP,” said Cone.

“We are going to the qualifier in July. We have an opportunity to qualify. It’s going to be a tough, tough road with Latvia playing at home. It’s really difficult but not impossible,” said Cone.

Cone intends to build the team up as competitively as possible to be at par with their opponents, most of whom are the world’s best.

“We are not going out there with the idea that we’re just going to show up and try to look good. We are going to go out there and try to win. That’s always going to be our philosophy. That will always be our goal. It won’t be our focus but it will be our goal. Our focus is just to get the process of getting better every day. But the goal is to win,” said Cone.

JB was reason number one for that comeback.

However, lest we forget, Ange was reason number two, or even 1B. JB's explosion wouldn't matter if he didn't anchor our defense. Like sir Rds said, we were giving up baskets with June Mar on the floor, even with JB there. But there.

Kinda frustrating that he's being disregarded by the fans and some media guys, considering that of our pool of NP's right now, he's the next best fit after JB and JC.

Because he doesn't play for Ginebra. Isn't much of an online presence, doesn't have the " pusong Pinoy" vibes that vloggers can milk. Him coming from a posh school doesn't really help.

Sings the national anthem, and can speak Tagalog. I mean, that helps his "pusong Pinoy."

Although, can't disagree with the posh school part.

Let’s hope things materialize for the better.

We don’t want another fuck up like in 2022 when Tab had to be “replaced”.

Consistency is the name of the game.

fans and vloggers were really quiet when it comes to Kouame's big contribution,it even sounds like they're trying to erase his presence on the team, like they won because of China's hubris of letting Gilas have 2 NPs playing.

I like it that coach Tim's Gilas pool is consist of only 12 players as of the present, although coach Tim himself made it clear that there will be some tweaks along the way (remember that this pool would be for a 4-year cycle) & most likely there would be a No. of players that would be added in the pool. Of course there would be a No. of "old" or aging players in the current 12-man pool that are expected to be replaced within the 4-year cycle.

But what I like about this 12-man roster is that they are going to be regular fixtures of the national team in the next 4 years and therefore it would be easier to establish cohesion & chemistry. Also, I'm a believer of a smaller national pool so as cohesion & chemistry will be achieved easier & faster.

I remember coach Chot Reyes' Pilipinas-San Miguel pool during the 2005 to 2007 period in which more than 30 players got to suit up for team Pilipinas in various international & FIBA competitions during that 3-year period. I think that pool/team had a hard time achieving cohesion & chemistry as there were hardly any regular fixtures of team Pilipinas. Certain group of players would suit up in one tournament, then a different set of players would suit on the next tournament.

I'm confident that coach Tim's current team consisting of a small pool or roster will be able to establish cohesion & chemistry faster & easier than having a bigger pool of players.

Man if only Ange can be considered a local, was there any news of SBP trying to lobby for his exemption?

Sir Melo,

as of the moment there hasn't any official news for the lobbying but as a consensus on all IBNers, the first major step is the PBA need to tweak a little bit there existing rules on eligibility to accommodate athletes who was naturalized by law.

if that happens, that would be the sign.

That should be the pipeline.. this is what other national teams doing for years… Lebanon has Arakji, Saoud, Ezzedine, Haidar in every national team games… Jordan always have Ibrahim, Al Dwairi, Bzai, Abu Hawas… Argentina always have Campazzo, Deck, Laprovittola, Delia and Brussino… this system is always successful because they know each other well…

Makes me wonder why Thirdy has yet to carryover his good games in the B-league to Gilas? And its unfortunate that he's not with the 12-man roster of coach Tim. Hope that if that 12-man Gilas roster adds some players in the near future, Thirdy would be among the additions.

I'm thinking of Thirdy following the footsteps of Chris Newsome. Like Thirdy, Newsome's 3-pt shooting used to be suspect some years ago, though Newsome was able to improve his outside shooting lately. Both are athletic & play at the wings. Also, like Newsome, Thirdy has decent defense as well. If Thirdy can mold himself into a Chris Newsome, I think he will be serviceable for Gilas.

Atleast Newsome can shoot.. Many fans just telling Thirdy should improve his shooting… If he makes atleast 38% 3 pt shooter, he might have a chance in the future (or after 2028)…

Newsome is a bit taller, is a bit the better shooter and has better handles. He is also disciplined on defense. Thirdy at times gets lost on D. In Gilas he forces drives because of his subpar handles. Newsome can defend SFs at the Asia level. Thirdy cannot. So Thirdy really needs to up his skill more, shooting and handles because he needs to play the guard position.

Because he's an undersized SF with unreliable handles and outside shooting.

Being undersized is one thing. Lacking basic fundamentals is an automic "cut".

He has to be good at one thing. What's the difference between him and Abueva? Abueva is a poor shooter, has shaky handles too. Abueva is one of our best rebounder. If he can bring something to the table they can find a role for him. Right now there are far better options who can play the same positions.

Abueva is better shooter than Thirdy, more hardworking than him... Si Thirdy tamad bumox-out yan... He just want highlight reels.... It just his current team (San En) situation of Thirdy fits his style... But his skills is not needed yet for Gilas....Scottie can do what Thirdy can bring, w/ better shooting, defense and especially rebounding...

Tenacity & boundless energy are Abueva's thumpcard. And those are what Abueva uses to make up for his shortcomings in skills & size. Remember that at barely 6-foot-2, Abueva is clearly an undersized small forward in the FIBA game & his shooting is below averaged for a natural wingman. Well, in fairness to Thirdy Ravena, I think in terms of shooting & ball handling, he has a slight edge over Abueva. But in terms of tenacity & energy, Abueva has a significant edge over Thirdy.

We have a vast supply of guards and recently several good-sized wings.

We lack bigs and shooters.

And no, we can not trot out 2-3 teams against our traditional rivals, much less against superior competition. Sure we can trot out 10 different teams against Thailand. There are levels to this.

As for bigs, we lack defensive-minded bigs in the FIBA stage, with AJ being the only defensive anchor we have in Gilas. The max height of our bigs is 6'6"-6'8", so we'll have to develop lateral quickness and perimeter shooting for them to be able to play 4 in FIBA. For center, we'll have to naturalize, since we don't have many bigs that are 6'10" and above.

Shooters, that really has to be ingrained first. Shoot when open. I watched a paliga last night, and the players turned down wide-open threes in favor of midrange pull-ups or drives.

That said, we still could use a reserve team from which to call up players in case of retirement, injury, etc.

Besides Andy Gemao, who do you guys think are the best young players suited to represent our country and play for Gilas?

Thompson is a good choice for PG and good pg who is defensive and pass first pg, but we still need one pure pg a good passer. They should have included Abarrientos who has good court vision and good handles and shooting. Just my opinion. CJ Perez and Newsome are good ball handlers and slashers but lacks the court vision to be a PG, they are not a good passer and not known to set plays for a team.
