Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Thirdy shoots 27% from 3 this season. In FIBA, however, he shoots 34.5%. Weird case. And the shooting problem can be remedied a bit. Problem is, we will need a shooter at 1, 3, and 4 to compensate for his lack of shooting.

But you can say the same for players in his position like CJ Perez, who has the same tools on offense, but worse defense.

Well, maybe if we have Dwight R. & Oftana playing the 3 spot, a Kevin Q. playing as both the 3 & 4 spots, a Jordan Heading playing the 2 spot, we will have enough shooters in the team already that having a slashing wingman like Thirdy with suspect 3-pt shooting won't really hurt the team. I'm really thinking of molding Thirdy into like a Chris Newsome, who is also athletic like Thirdy & with suspect 3-pt shooting as well. Newsome though is a defensive gem & has that deadly mid-range pull up jumper. I think Thirdy should polish his mid-range shot & further improve his defense.

I have an idea on why there is a discrepancy. It's usually the rhythm. With fiba, the ball is not really in his hands a lot so his threes are catch-and-shoot and not a lot of volume. With his team, he has the ball in his hands more and shots are more on the move or pull-ups. Very few players can be good at both without a lot of practice/training. It uses different sets of footwork, breathing, timing, etc. Then you have to practice it a lot of times to get the muscle memory.

Kobe suffered that with the USA team when he was getting open catch-and-shoots and he couldn't make it. He had to re-train because he wasn't used to being open and it took a while.

Young Lebron I think was caught on the mike telling Kobe to drive it instead of chucking the ball in the Olympics. Sorry Kobe is a chucker. Yes he hits some clutch shots but also he misses a lot of difficult shots and 3s. His shooting inefficiency was hidden by his clutch shots and volume. He couldnt get away with it in the Olympics because he was playing with more efficient scorers.

I skipped the UAAP season.

How was Francis Lopez?

Should we include him in the pool?

Quite a plausible explanation here, Sir. In Thirdy's case, i think he has to do something with his shooting form and mechanics. I'm not an expert here but from what I constantly see during his games/highlights, he has that certain awkwardness and delay in his shooting movements that only works when he gets left wide open.

The good thing is he has shown that he can have decent shooting % in fiba, so there's no reason for him not to replicate or even improve on it in fiba tournaments. Spend more time in the filmroom and figure out what shot works for him. Then just do tons of reps on those.

Thirdy's 35% 3FG refers to his most recent tourney, Asia Qualifiers 2023. Specifically, it refers to his last two games, against NZ and INDO where he got 2/6 and 3/6 respectively from 3. Prior to that in 2022 Asia Cup he got 20%. As mentioned by IPC he got 20% something in the current B league season. If memory servers me right, everytime I saw Thirdy, except for those 2 games in the qualifiers, he was baldog from 3. Given all his games, shouldnt we treat those two games as outliers? Thirdy is supposedly playing his best ball in B league right now. And I think his team also has a good standing. But what does it say about Thirdy's fit in Gilas when at the point that he is playing his best basketball his 3FG is still subpar for an SG?

I was referring to Thirdy's career 3FG% in FIBA when I mentioned the 34.5%.

We have a 26yo NP in Ange Kouame. Boatwright's in the same age bracket as Ange. And, he can shoot, yes, but we will need AJ if he's the NP lined up, because rim protection might suffer.

I read Boatwright's pre-NBA draft scouting report, and the reading on the defense is not good.

And, watching the game against Ginebra right now, he's being attacked by Ginebra's bigs. Not a good look defensively. We will need AJ to cover for him, and for Kai to improve his defense.

Defense is our biggest need for our NP, since we've lacked a local defensive presence since Ping and Gabe left. Dwight Ramos is versatile and he can impact the game on defense, but I dunno if he can compensate.

Ok. I see now. so he 2/10 in 5 games in 2023, 5/14 in 4 games in 2022, and 3/4 in 1 game in 2021. 10 games in 3 years make up the bulk of his 3 FG shots in Fiba. I think this is a classic case of small sample size. I would say his B league games over more games and more minutes are a better indicator of his career 3 FG. Fact is he was hot for 2 games in Fiba over this period. But I think it's a fools errand to hope this is a general trend than an outlier. Thirdy has never been a high 3FG shooter even in college. Dwight is also not a high 3 FG shooter but he plays a bigger position and therefore we can live with it. But a guard having a low 3 FG is risky.

And the 6'5 Tony Biahop locking him up

Why a 6'4 combo guard like Dwight would play the 3?This is like a freaking Chot's style of go small, you finally have some size at 1/2 combo then you will position him as an undersize 3.Instead keep drilling KQ and Oftana at 3/2 spot to have more size on the team when facing bigger guards. The 3 spot is not as much as a problem, now Gilas seeing lots of 6'6-6'7 types coming up for that position and they have a couple of 6'8 players who can combo forward. They're still very thin at the 4/5 spot.

because historically, thats what is plays when he is wearing a Gilas jersey. I think CTB used him as a 2 and like a game or 2 at the point for a few mins. but most of the time he is at the wings. If the new NT coach will play him more at the 2, he isnt really a PG, then maybe people would be more comfortable saying to put him at the 2. otherwise, its just historical position for him at the 3/4.

Dunno if it's Chot or Tab but I remember I watched him handling the ball a lot and even initiating the offense with mixed results that even Snow called him out lol. If only all our tall wings are given the liberty to develop their confidence in their ball handling against high quality competition maybe we would have more Dwights in our NT.

Exactly. Teach positionless basketball early. Teach every kid to defend the perimeter (even if it means banning zones at the youth level; everyone should keep their man in front of them), to shoot, to handle. Might have bigger guards or bigger point forwards.

Need more 6'4"+ guys with Dwight's versatility. Most versatile guy I've seen before Dwight is Abueva, and he's only 6'2".

Ho hum, sbp taking their time with the announcement. Im waiting more for the list of players that suppose to be core of whoever the coach will be then the actual coach. Pretty sure they are negotiating with these players and jot juat the coach before doing the presscon.
come on sbp, give billy manzano something new to hate on.

I just hope that SBP has been talking to our b-league players - Kai, Dwight, thirdy, Carl, kiefer, about their possible stint with Gilas in the coming 1st window in February.
