Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

  • Thread starter Thread starter IPC2

"Identity" is what is important for teams. Puso was accurate for that Pingris team and he embodied that identity. Then of course media and marketers milked it dry.

Gilas have become a good defensive team since Cone joined the team. 10th in defense in the WC, and defended pretty well in the Asian Games too.

We should make that our identity. Fits the "puso" and "laban" mantras.

as much I find it very corny on my own personal taste maybe because I had the impression that it was overly used and advertised by those bias main stream media, as per Sir Metta "Then of course media and marketers milked it dry". in some degree fans like us must come up with something to yell on, a rallying point to boast our players and motivate them during game time especially when the going gets tough.

as a 6th man we need to share something...they needed that.

SMH FILE: In the search for the new Gilas head coach, Tab Baldwin didn't even get a phone call.

I wonder: Is ignored a synonym for blackballed?

Another great candidate with NBA pedigree -- Will Voigt -- also didn't get a call.

Yeah, after the exodus and the "tactical immaturity" comments, no way, let's move on from Tab.

As for Voigt, yeah, he could have helped. The guy beat us with Angola. At least have him as a consultant, maybe? As good as some of the newer coaches are (Topex, Goldwin, Charles, Jarin), we still need someone to guide them for international play.

Here are the average ages of our rosters in past major tournaments:

2013 FIBA Asia Championship: 29.83
2014 FIBA World Cup: 29.75
2014 Asian Games: 30.42
2015 FIBA Asia Championship: 31.08
2016 OQT: 29.08
2017 FIBA Asia Cup: 28.17
2018 Asian Games: 31.5
2019 FIBA World Cup: 29
2021 FIBA OQT: 22.5
2023 FIBA World Cup: 28.33
2022 Asian Games: 31.67

I guess we've rotated players, since our average age has fluctuated over the years. We had no core from 2018 to 2019, and had to start over after that epic fail in the 2019 WC, and we started over again after we let go of Tab from the Gilas program.

We were on the older side in some tournaments, though, and the only tournaments where we had substantial success with older rosters were in the 2015 FIBA Asia Cup (silver) and the 2022 Asian Games (gold). Our roster needs to get younger for the 2027 WC.

since LH took over, i always thought the HC will either be TC or NB. that is still my expectation now. i will be surprised if its not one or the other.

i've nothing with battlecrys. just not into it. i'd rather have a chant . if someone comes up with a Go uste, get that ball, or animo La Salle like chant, that would be epic.

Chants or songs. Like those in European football.

We need good lyricists for those, though. Hahahahahaha.

song? hard to beat Unibersidad ng Pilipinas. but that might not be easy to teach casual gilas fans. again, if it can be done, it would be epic.

We will need a group of ultras (hardcore fans) who frequently go to games to lead in the chants and songs. Our football teams have ultras. We will need ultras in our basketball teams too.

Yeah pretty cool chant. Don't remember having this in the losing days.

Tab's camp just loves to leak. The fact that this hasn't leaked meant it wasn't Tab from the start.

If the SBP is talking about a 4 year cycle we have a handful of 25 and under players that has played in the seniors team.

B League players
Kai Sotto - 7'2" 21 y/o
AJ Edu - 6'10" 24 y/o
Carl Tamayo - 6'7" 22 y/o
RJ Abarrientos - 5'10 24 y/o
Dwight Ramos - 6'4" 25 y/o

KBL players
Rhenz Abando - 6'2" 25 y/o
SJ Belangel - 5'9" 24 y/o
Juan Gomez De Liano - 6'0" 24 y/o
Dave Ildefonso 6'2" 23 y/o

PBA players
Javi Gomez De Liano - 6'3" 25 y/o

College players
Kevin Quiambao - 6'5" 22 y/o
Mason Amos - 6'7" 19 y/o
Francis Lopez - 6'5" 20 y/o
Jerom Lastimosa - 5'11" 25 y/o
Geo Chiu - 6'9" 22 y/o

** Ange Kouame - 6'11" 26 y/o

Include Gutang in the KBL gang. He's eligible, and he's improving with LG.

Now, we'll need as many of the U26's as possible, because most of the pool for the WC and Asiad (excluding the ones you had on that list) are old.

Japeth (retired) - 36 going 37
Marcio - 36 going 37
Abueva - 35 going 36
Brownlee (NP) - 35 going 36
Erram (retired) - 34 going 35
June Mar - 34 going 35
Newsome - 32 going 33
Alas - 32 going 33
Terrence - 31 going 32
Pogoy - 31 going 32
JC - 31 going 32
Parks - 30 going 31
Scottie - 30 going 31
Perez - 30 going 31
Oftana - 28
Heading - 27 going 28
Malonzo - 27 going 28
Thirdy - 27 going 28

From this group, we really need to select those who can play until at least 2025. And the core has to be one that can play until 2027 at least. Focus on continuity even after that.

The core for the last Asiad was Japeth, June Mar, Newsome, Ange, Oftana, Perez, and Scottie. Excluding Japeth, who's already retired, that core has an average age of 31.33. We really need to get a younger core, one that can last until 2027.

There are advantages to staying in the Philippines. That being I still believe player development should be our priority so it would be if top players, especially youth prospects, leave especially for top leagues abroad.

Well, Goorjian does have a point. Players staying here will help boost the league's talent level and level of competition.

That said, players went to overseas leagues for the money. Teams cannot match the salaries abroad. For teams to be able to have that kind of spending power, the PBA and the teams have to find ways to generate more revenue and distribute it.

Also, playing abroad kind of helps the national team more than staying in the PBA, because we're already sure that the players abroad will be released when called up, as the B.League, KBL, and NBL honor the FIBA breaks, more importantly the offseasons coincide with FIBA continental tournaments and the World Cup.

The PBA only had substantial breaks for FIBA from August 2022 to September 2023. Before that, we were cramming for the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup and the 2019 FIBA World Cup (where we fielded one of our worst teams, and the lack of time to prepare (barely 2 weeks) didn't help either). Question is, will the PBA commit to adjusting the sked for to help our NT's long-term cohesion and success?

Again, for me Identity is the most important.

But if we're going to have a chant/battlecry/cheer...something to pump up the team in crucial moments of the game. Something along the line of Iceland's "Viking Clap" is cool...

It's always best to have a combination of percussions (drums, feet stomping, etc) then a chant to pump up a team.

Al Panlilio obviously doesn't like Tab Baldwin.
And neigther SMC nor PBA people like him as well.

Sir C2,

Same here as well but not like those Puso! Puso! thing..we need something new.

as for those drumbeats on both UAAP and NCAA, sorry guys but don't be touchy on this esp. on those fellow IBNers, that century old gimmickry are not ear friendly at all. need to compose something that reflects each school's spirit without the dongs and gongs sounds.(it sounds someone will be thrown down inside a life size pot as an offering to those African gods and tribesmen, just like on those good old Tarzan movies with the cannibals, really creepy indeed).

sorry ha..masakit talaga sa tenga eh..sa totoo lang.
