Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

  • Thread starter Thread starter IPC2
  • Start date Start date
I just hope that Kai Sotto gets to train for Gilas in next year's "FIBA season" which is around July to September. Kahit mga 1 month lang maka train/play si Kai sa Gilas next year. I understand he would be busy for the NBA next year.

Hope AJ Edu also spends around 2 months with Gilas next year from July to September. As what coach Tab emphasizes: "And I just think it highlights the fact of what I've been saying: if we want to bring new players in, they need to have a considerable amount of time with the team."

I hope so too! I want to see all possible Gilas prospects to join us especially our players oversees! Hopefully a few PBA players can commit for the National Team as well.

Parks Jr. and Keifer will be a perfect addition to the Gilas team , that will also add experience to our young team especially at guard position. Kai, Parks Jr. and Keifer trio will be a good trio in the upcoming Fiba Asia cup.

Kiefer, Parks and AJ as reinforements form 2022 June ( 1 year before 2023 WC) will do it, (tapos) , the team will be talented enough. ( Kai, Kouame, Balti, Tamayo, Dwight, thirdy ) , with this core 9 players

And by having those 9 players means that we have seen the last of the Nieto kids in the Gilas final lineup. The mere fact of having Parks and Kiefer, means that the leadership and stability will be present on our team. Parks commitment is really big time for Gilas

I would fill the 10 to 12 th man with glue guys, ( if they won't get PT anyway, it's better to get locker room guys , who will support the main 9 man rotation, rather than a star who will complain why he is not getting PT

What Parks’ commitment? His Gilas clause in his BLeague contract? Talk is cheap. Although it’s good that he is open for the possibility, this is not the first time he spoke of of his “desire” to play for Gilas.

Until he shows up in actual training, it is wise to temper our expectations.

I agree. Parks Jr. and Kiefer and hopefully and praying that Aj edu will be healthy by FIBA Asia cup time will be reinforcement the team need. Just this three will be enough to reinforce the team. And I almost forgot let us not write off yet Kobe Paras. We may see a much improve Kobe Paras next year.

Grabe and we still have a lot of potential players and factors to look into, like PBA players, Clarkson's eligibility, Kouame's possible exception, Tuffin, Edu's recovery, Panopio, Paras and etc. It is very exciting to see how everything will play out in the end. One thing is for sure, we will be a competitive team in 2023, but the question is, how far can we go and how will we look by then?

I would actually add Heading to the list , so basically , in no particular order of who starts

1. Kiefer / Dwight
2 Thirdy/Heading
3 Parks/ Tamayo
4 AJ/ Baltazar
5 Kouame /Kai

bench glue guys Go/ Matt

you prefer Kouame than JC as NP?

for me, the permanent core would be:

Kai
AJ
Rayray
JC
Dwight
Tamayo
Baltazar

i believe the should be the ones considered shoo-ins. The other 5 roster spots. It will be batted over. We have a lot of candidates Internationally, college and also some in the pba.

Not necessarily for 2023, but i think for the current 2022 Kouame would be the default (defensive anchor) , especially if Parks ( a JC fill in is available), note as well we are still uncertain if AJ is healthy ( Ange role) and if Kai is ready defensively as a main rim protector for 35 min.

If Jordan comes in , he replaces Jordan :)

Gilas needs to play as guests in the PBA to build some toughness especially the guards. Prep na rin nila against Middle Eastern team, Australia and New Zealand.

Those MENA teams in the King's Cup were a taste of the physicality this young Gilas team has to go through. They have upside, but yeah, they will need to be tougher, physically and mentally. PBA games will help build it, with their physicality.

They will need to make their shots, though. Yes, with the way Pinoy basketball team defenses are structured, they'll be left open from outside, but they'll have to make their shots.

For me, the best chance for Gilas as of current, is to join the import conference (governor's) because the imports taken are usually SFs to Off guards, plus PBAs strength is at the guard position. So this will be a good test for Gilas.

To make it a bearing game for all, FIBA rules should apply, and Gilas will have to play all teams for 19 whole days (every other day game), to mimic tournament plays.

Ofcourse, all games will add up to each teams respective win loss record.

If only things will go our favor. The current Gilas program headed by coach Tab is the very foundation of our hope in 2023 & beyond and that's something SBP & MVP are in control of. Other things like the possibility of Clarkson playing for us in 2023 World Cup and PBA players reinforcing Gilas with sufficient period of time of training with Gilas, are things that SBP & MVP group aren't in control of.

so better accomplish things that sbp is in control of like locking fil-foreign prospects asap. those who went of their way to get their phil passports should be attended to immediately (harris, Femi edu, mahmooud, and company)

To be as competitive as possible in 2023, if we can't get an exception for Clarkson or Koaume as locals, then we must at least enlist a few capable PBA players to raise our level. As much as I dislike the PBA and their ways, we do need their cooperation beyond the PBA Gilas draft to compose the best team possible. Hopefully, even a few of these guys can commit to us with the sufficient time needed to be successful.

They need to join this year, even just bubble training, because Tab said that he would have a core by next year, meaning players that did not have any bubble training will be less likely to be able to join, aside from a few exceptional talents like JC. The Gomez brothers, Rangel, Bulanadi and others are safe from this since they have already earned their stripes and some have even played in games. I think 2022 would be the deadline because once we enter the 5th window/November 2022, I think we will have a core by then. All of our overseas/local players must join as much as possible.

Exactly, I don't care if our 2nd/3rd tier future prospects/talent will play in the PBA, as long as our future top tier talents like our Tamayos, Baltazars, Ramoses, Ravenas, Sottos, etc will be playing overseas or in NCAA Division 1. Beyond 2023, we need our best talents to be able to play for us, and if some of them end up in the PBA, at least an independent or MVP team can have them, so they can still be able to play for us. We don't want a repeat of Gilas 1. Most of those guys never wore a Gilas jersey ever again, and if they did, it was not as much as we liked.

South Sudan eliminated Kenya 60-58

Kenya is one of the shortest teams in this tourney but South Sudan, long and tall, cannot put them away easily. Kenya battled from 20 points down at the half, to cut the deficit to 60-58 with about 2 and half minutes or so. Both teams went cold in thereon. Kenya has at least 4 possessions to tie or get the lead in the final 2 minutes. But they either miss or turned the ball over. Kenya even has the last possession but the last second 3 point attempt just wont drop.

Observations:
-Kenya is far from being the most talented squad but they offset that with their defense and hustle points. Credit head coach Liz Mills.
-Both teams don't shoot well from the outside, and from the stripe. The shooting mechanics of the big guys are, well, ugly. The most skilled players, like the Asians, are the guards and the smaller guys.

A similarity to Gilas is that we win with our defense as well. When we defend well against Asian powerhouses, we usually win.

Nothing new, we can't afford to just change baskets with korea, japan, china, (aus and nz if u consider). They have better scorers imo so far. But we can defend them thru coach tab schemes.

OFF TOPIC

Looks like the weakness of korea has been exposed and validated. They cannot handle quality bigs opponent. Yao, Hadaddi, Kai/Kouame gave them losses.

Its a known weakness noon pa but they havebtheir greatest victories at expense of yao ming, at expense of haddadi.. If gilas we romanticize beating korea.. in kore.. they romanticize asian games victoties as China will not allow them to host a Fiba asia tournament
