Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

There it is the real height without the exageration of vloggers, well that makes two young candidates with size.

Hopefully Seven can play 4, and can defend, and Konov builds on his motor to become a good defensive 4.

Among our current 20-year old & below local bigs, I think Mason Amos is the most skilled offensively (he registered eye-popping stats with Batang Gilas U-18 in 2022 Asian U-18 tournament). Problem is that he seems to be a dead-weight on defense. Mason seems to have gained extra weight since turning college & such extra weight slowed him down specially his laterals on defense. But I have a feeling that if Alex Konov's career will be well managed, he will turn out to be the better big man than Amos.

Nevertheless, I'm impressed with Amos & Konov's 3-pt shooting.

I'll still take Amos but not a starter,he sits farther on the bench like no 7,put him in special set of offense,Konov will be a good backup.

You need a big like AJ and Ange to cover for Mason's deficiencies on defense. Siguro, a wing like Navarro too.

there's a lot of options for JH, if there is no takers in the B-League(for now), KBL or T1 leagues he can still return to the PBA, be included for in the Feb. window training pool or hopefully for the OQT as well. with that level of skillsets he will still be serviceable for Gilas hopefully until 2027.

Ineligible in the KBL

Seven's 6'8.75" without shoes, according to Enzo Flojo.

As for Konov, he's a local, I think.

He’s pretty tall. But Ive never seen him be a decent rim protector unlike say Demisana He’s still more of a PF in my book.

It couldn't hard either if Gilas could the two combo forwards of Tamayo and Balti, without an AJ,Gilas can really use those two.

I have not closed the case on Amos' defensive ability. He is only 19 and a lot of times, his mistakes seem mental. He's only going to get stronger physically and quicker (with the right type of training). If and when he learns proper positioning and anticipation (like a lot of other late-bloomer bigs in the Philippines) I think he can be a plus defender.

Enoch Valdez is a potential Gilas player. He is a better shooter than his fellow Amerasians Calvin Abueva and CJ Perez. https://youtu.be/RjHVd8XsXUs?si=OxF_W8IkVA3Hal9x

Hopefully he can improve his PG skills. He's only 6'2", which limits him to guard at the Gilas level.

With position-less basketball, it's more of being a guard on the defensive side. On the offensive side, "pg" abilities can come from different spots now.

He can concentrate on being a guard stopper and with his 3pt ability and athleticism, he can be a potentially good 3-and-D player. Also, even if he's listed 6'2, his arms looks long and his hands look big so I'm pretty confident he has a long wingspan.

The next step is to train other positions for PG duties. So far, only guards can run point, with most floor generals being 5'11" and under, with some wings 6'2" and under being unable to run point.

ah ok..may I know the reason? even though he is FIBA eligible.

Please educate me Sir.

Thank you.

Both parents should be Asian, which is why FIBA ineligible Christian David was able to land a gig there

In the Korean league, eligibility as an Asian heritage or quota import is also different for Fil-foreigners who are required to show a Philippine passport and prove that both parents are also Filipinos. Christian David was recognized as an Asian heritage import because he has a Philippine passport and both parents are Filipinos. But Fil-Ams like Barefield and Winston won’t be eligible as Asian heritage imports because one of their parents isn’t Filipino.

ah ok..noted on this.

Hope we can appoint him starting from the November 2024 window. We could use a guy like him.

Appoint capable guys for assistants too. Jong (as always), Topex, Goldwin, Charles, Jarin. At least have them learn from him as a succession plan.

similar to what danding did with Ron Jacobs and his proteges. And the good thing is he never said anything bad about SBP and the PBA, he even called the league as a top tier (top 4 or 5) league in the world. Plus he knows when to shut up ( re: criticism against pba officiating).

I jus hope the BCAP will be open to his possible hiring

Trivia, Goorjian’s father was a friend and an assistant by the late great Ron Jacobs at Loyola Marymount University.

A 2005 article by Quinito, when Goorjian then coaching the CJ Bruton lead Sydney Kings play a pair of exhibition games againts the RP team pool

https://www.philstar.com/sports/2005/05/12/277205/aussie-coach-rp-5-can-go-long-way

Goorjian told The Star he was impressed by the Filipinos’ style of play.

"I like the way they move," said Goorjian. "They cut, screen and pass well. The problem is lack of size. That’s something you can’t work on in practice. In the first game, they shot poorly. They had open looks and if the shots fell in, we would’ve been in deep trouble."

Goorjian said officiating wasn’t a damper although he picked up a technical in Game 2 for protesting a foul call against guard C. J. Bruton.

"In the first quarter of the first game, I thought the officiating was too tight," he continued. "Neither team could get any momentum because the play kept on getting stopped. I don’t think the officiating was patriotic. I just thought the officials called it too tight but we learned to adjust along the way."

Goorjian said he mixed and matched defensive tactics depending on the players on the floor.

"I used the zone when I had my nucleus that was used to my defensive system and I went man-to-man when I had relatively new guys on the court," he said. "There was no conscious plan to play big or small. When I had small guys like C. J., B. J. (Carter) and Luke (Martin) playing together, it was because they gave me the energy we needed to play hard. I benched the guys who were just walking up and down the floor."

Hopefully, the coach is good and the players can fit the 2027 timeline.

She already confirmed it's not Goorjian, which means TC is again on the shortlist.

I can't think of anyone besides Tab and Rajko with an "impressive track record". The former will obviously not be considered, while the latter is a possibility as he is only a "consultant" for Benilde.

Other coaches who expressed interest are Will Voight, Mario Palma, Sergio Hernandez, and Mike Taylor. Mark Dickel and Nenad Vucinic are also options but their relations with the SMC group are questionable.

the clue is “popular coach and very deep knowledge of the game”
