Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

  • Thread starter Thread starter IPC2
  • Start date Start date
With the 1st window of the 2025 FIBA Asia qualifiers 2 months away, we are still in the dark as to who the players we are going to send, who our head coach will be & on how our team is going to prepare. Thanks to SBP for this. Talking about foresight that SBP badly needs.

Time flies so fast that before we realize it, the 1st window would just be 3 weeks away & yet everything is still uncertain.

Panlilio and Vargas : OUT

We need someone like Alapag or Gabe. Someone who knows this program deep down.

Yeah, Panlilio and Vargas are not fit to lead SBP. Their crap forced us to reset over and over, and set our men's program back.

2022 Asiad? Qualification for the U17 WC? That's on the Gilas players and coaching staff. Heck, Alfrancis Chua had more to do with the Asiad victory.

Women's progression? That's on Pat Aquino building the program and recruiting all he can.

If the Bulls had GarPax, the Kings had Divac, the Knicks have Dolan, we have Panlilio and Vargas.

Don't follow other American sports but it seems every Chicago team is ran horribly.

We have to take care of AJ, Kai and even Kouame... They are all injure prone players, We don't have to sacrifice themselves just to win against minnow teams... Although because we don't have NP yet, I see Kouame will take over for now, As Brownlee still suspended.... Maybe Kouame will just play vs Taiwan, But no need for him to play vs Hong Kong... Give those young players to get some experience playing FIBA tournaments and let's see who will shine among them... Maybe Amos, Lopez, KQ, Escamis, Cortez will get the shot too...

Mike Philips even though he is not yet cleared for now, Geo Chiu and Junel Policarpio should be included in the pool as well...I hope the Granpa's may somehow woke up in the righteous side of the bed

Oftana outpalying malonzo

Oftana was better even before getting drafted and will have a better career when all is said and done as long as he wouldn't be content playing as a 4. I see him as a bigger version of Keneth Duremdes. I am hoping we produce a 6'8 version of Vergel Meneses in the future.

If they made him play the combo 3/2 in Gilas that would just put more size on the guards rotation and I'll pick him over Malonzo every day.

Could have been Kobe. He clearly has the better physical tools over Oftana and most of our wing players. Had better training, better upbringing, was a former MVP's son. Sayang

Jamie has all the tools innthe world but really struggled to play as 3 in fiba and refkected in his ginebra play..he just need to relax let the game flow to him..

Here's Cone's Christmas wish for there to be a sustainable Gilas program.

"“To continue and follow up what we’ve done in the Asian Games," Cone told SPIN.ph.

One thing, in particular, about Gilas' Asiad triumph that Cone wants to continuously see more of come 2024 and beyond is the unwavering support of the sport's stakeholders — from sporting leaders to Pinoy hoops fans anew."

The article also mentioned that he's incumbent.

between oftana, malonzo, a healthy navarro, and soon francis lopez it's good to have multiple options, kobe paras is no longer needed.

Jamie Malonzo isn't really a natural 3 which Calvin Oftana is. I just think that in terms of ball handling & 3 pt. shooting, Oftana has the edge over Malonzo.

Just curious though, was Oftana already playing the 3 spot back in SBC? I always have this idea in my head that he was playing the 4/5 spot in SBC because that is the usual position for a guy his height playing in college.

Mostly the 4. But they always had guys like him playing the 4/3 spots like Arthur, Mocon, Bahio, Alas, Sorela, Gamalinda, Mendoza, Rome, Navarro, etc. Puno fits the same template

its more of style james payosing is a 3 in san beda but he ia more of a 2 guard.. like what pople said on puno plays 5 on beda but can be more of a combo forward

Urgghh, Kobe needs to forget about being a go to guy. He needs to watch tapes of Glenn Khobuntin, a solid 3 and D guy. Kobe has the athleticism and size to excel defensively especially at the Asian region and his 3 point shooting is pretty promising based on his 3pt percentage in his last year in JPN.
