Long time no see IBN.

What did I missed?

How is it going here still?

SBP should seriously consider Mike Philipps for FIBA exemption. Philipps is a perfect role player for Gilas in the very near future. U got a 6-foot-8 Mark Pingris right there. Philipps is even more skilled than Ping.

probably when they were both in college. pingris' post game & defensive skills were way better when he started playing for gilas, very high BBIQ player

Pingris was all brawn and physical abilities before his injury IRC. He was a top pick but got moved right? After his ACL surgery he slimmed down and focused more on defense. Ping though is a home grown. I dont think he good skills development in college. US though should be more competitive. I am not sure why Philipps doesnt seem to have much skill. Well maybe his wingspan and athleticism were enough for him. Well even up to now.

played above the rim in college and early pro years, but already had good defensive instincts by then. iirc he actually bulked up or should i say strengthened up when he started getting injured regularly and developed a ground-based post game

People need to realize , one of the most critical skill sets for bigs , is MOTOR ! You don't have that , and you're rather limited regardless of skill set developed, the unfortunate reality is many of our bigs do not have a motor, and as such the Philippines has a reputation of being a weak rebounding and in defense (as the frontline are the anchors and are forced to switch to the perimeter in FIBA)

DAdmiral

U think Pingris had good motor but wasn't that skilled? I think Ping had the shortcomings in shooting & ball handling (for his height) but was able to make up for it with his athleticism, tenacity, energy & defensive skills of course.

Just look at his body pre and post acl injury. He looks bulky in his pre injury photos. Post injury he is leaner. But of course he maintained his strength. Probably lessened his body fat.

Sadly uaap teams and it imports do have a below average motor tahts why motor mike Philips excelled in the league and not their import.. Ncaa do have high motor bigs but they have a height of an overweight point guard..

The high-motor players are usually 6'5" and below (and even in those players, we're lucky; Oftana, Navarro, Malonzo; Arvin Tolentino has a poor motor). Problem is, 6'5" is the height of an SF, 188-193 is the height of an SG, and 188-below is the height of a PG.

It's the schemes and rotation to the perimeter players that are good in the UAAP, especially UP, La Salle, NU, and Ateneo. UP and La Salle have plenty of motor, though.

I think that FSAs are a bit on the short-end of calls. Just look at that specific play where Mike was allowed to man-handle Diouf for a few seconds only for Diouf to be called a foul because of a grab that wasn't actually strong. The room for error for FSAs is so small that they have to be really good, like Kouame or Diouf for them to play many minutes. They get called for ticky tacky fouls but many times the smaller local centers are allowed to excessively body them up without calls. I get that this is a way to level the playing field. The FSAs are much longer, taller and athletic than the locals. Mike Philipps is the best local center but he is just 6'8. If calls were equal he won't be able to do anything against 7'0 Diouf. Even Kouame got into foul trouble a lot of times. But as you can seen in his play in the Asian games he is not a guy who typically fouls. MVP points were even changed to pad assist's weight, a stat that FSA's don't usually dominate. So for me let's just call a spade a spade. Calls are not in favor for FSAs to give locals more room to shine. That is fine. Just look at a guy as athletic and skilled as Momowei. If calls were equal don't you think that type of guy won't dominate more? But let's not pretend that Mike Phillips is not much inferior to a guy like Diouf if calls were equal.

Motor is about effort and energy. In our few bigs with skills and athleticism, they are usually tasked to produce a lot so they conserve their energy and do not go all out for every play. It's usually the less skilled/undersized who are effort guys (high-motor) because if they do not give max effort what else can they provide.

But the important thing is, for those guys that conserve, they have to produce even with conserved effort. Some guys are just lazy, they don't produce and still don't give extra effort.

One of my theories also is nutrition/fitness. Energy is so important to be able to play relentless style. A lot of our players have poor diet/fitness regimen which results in limited energy.

For the people who watches the NCAA, you guys think Clint Escasmis could be a PG prospect for Gilas? Seems to me he has a good feel for the game and good size.

Bahay should just go to ateneo, they could use a point guard lol, his pals gamber and mason are already there, not to mention his ateneo de cebu teammates plus all the PG minutes he can have. Beside's its been proven that talent alone on a stacked team cant win you a championship, why not learn from one of the best coaches to ever do it in the uaap while he's still there. This game pretty much shows how overrated coach gold is anyways, besides not calling the shots on defense, doesnt make necessary adjustments leading to questionable playcalling. Imagine not winning it all with that stacked team geez.
Shows that you need offensive adjustments. Man, can't just ride the defense all season.

Young coach pa naman si Goldwin, but he has to expand his playbook.

If Goldwin's to coach Gilas, it's best as an assistant muna just because of defense.
