Darn shame, honestly, that Troy didn't develop well, and that affected his usefulness for Gilas. Now, I think he shouldn't be considered in the pool at all, considering that we already have guys like AJ Edu and Carl Tamayo at four. Even Dwight plays 4 better than him. Heck, Mason and Baltazar are better options (they shoot better, at the very least, Balti's a better help defender, and Mason is 19).

Tab might have helped him improve in the perimeter the way he did with Balti.

Belmontes shot is thing beauty good arc not broken almost automatic swish, just the strength game and perimeter d(which cant be thought the only thing that separates good defenders from bad ones is effort and sometimes they reserve energy so that they can have more in the offensive side..

Yeah, he has good touch. He also has a good motor, which might bode well for his perimeter defense. His laterals show potential, as he has already good quickness. Hope he develops into a Gilas wing. Kahit tweener who can defend the perimeter, since he's already 6'6" and has great length.

mason is a terrbile defender though and he seems to have a very low motor, tab himself has pointed these things out why he amos is still playing limited minutes

mason isnt a 4 he is a typical european guy that only stand in zone defense

The way I see Mark Belmonte, he seems quicker than a Calvin Oftana, Will Navarro or a Dwight Ramos. I think Belmonte is a natural small forward. He seems to have a long wingspan. Good to know that he is only 20 yrs old. He really reminds me of a taller Allein Maliksi.

Guess who will be Gilas' OQT group come Nov.27 (Monday)?

KAQOF.jpg

Notes:
  • There can be a maximum of two European teams in each group and not more than three European teams in each tournament.
  • There can be a maximum of one Americas team per group.
  • There can be a maximum of one team from Asia and Oceania in each tournament.
  • There can be a maximum of one team from Africa into each tournament.
I hope Gilas will be grouped with more popular teams such as Lithuania or Spain... We still didn't face them since Gilas program started....

I think if Mason Amos doesn't improve his defense, he won't be that effective as a big man for Gilas even if his offense is outstanding, especially his 3-pt shooting. Coach Tim Cone described him as a 6-foot-7 Allan Caidic which speaks a lot of Amos' long-range shooting.

Good size small forwards that I think are serviceable for Gilas at present:

1. Dwight Ramos - Japan B-league
2. Calvin Oftana - PBA
3. Will Navarro - PBA
4. Ken Tuffin - PBA
5. Javi Gomez-Deliano - PBA

I believe Jamie Malonzo is a combo forward.

Is there a thread for Olympic qualifying tournament, the draw is on monday and the pots are out

I would develop mason if im tim or the next nt coach, putting mr unstoppable in the paint isaac go on our team isnt long term beneficial for us..

Hope no more 6-foot-2/6-foot-3 small forwards like we used to have in the 90's & even up to the late 2000's. We now have a good pool of 6-foot-5/6-foot-6 natural small forwards.

Nope... just one of those two... We will likely face 1 powerhouse team in POT 1 or 2.... The weakest team in either POT 1 and 2 is Greece and Slovenia if Giannis and Luka will not play... Italy is a good match up too since we just lost to them by just 7... Poland is also good match up too since China almost beat them before... But overall, we are damn underdogs with them... Meanwhile, Lebanon will have a chance advancing 1st round since they are in POT 4, They will face lower bracket teams in POT 5 or 6 unless they will be group with Croatia or Bahamas... They will be in trouble... They have to pray that they will just face any African teams

If you're just 6'2"-6'3", you better have Abueva's motor, defense, physical gifts, and maybe a good jumper to play 3 in FIBA at that size. Or if you're 6'4", at least Dwight's body type, strength, and speed. Otherwise, that size (6'2"-6'4") is better suited for the off-guard spot.

Good thing we have Dwight, Navarro, Malonzo, Oftana, and Lopez at that spot. Hopefully, Mark Belmonte, Justine Sanchez, Jonnel Policarpio and Aldous Torculas can develop as good wings for us.

Speaking of Abueva, it is still some sort of an enigma for me that despite Abueva being just 6-foot-2 (they say he's even barely 6-foot-2), he was serviceable to Gilas in 2015 despite not having a decent outside shooting. His height is that of an average (or even below average,) shooting guard in Asian basketball, yet he played as a small forward for Gilas & hardly caused any mismatch despite being matched up against 6-foot-5/6-foot-6 small forwards of the opposing teams.

Abueva obviously compensates for his shortcomings in height & skills (shooting,) with his unparalleled tenacity, energy & toughness.

Imagine if Phi basketball will have a 6-foot-5 version of a Calvin Abueva, I think we are going to consistently be in the top 3 teams in FIBA-Asia-Oceania basketball.

Big hands, long wingspan, and long standing reach would be an invaluable asset too. Speaking of our 6'3"-6'5" bball kids in the pipeline, those projected to become the stocky, undersized small/power forward types like Camson, Ferrer, Mariano, the Matt Evans-look-alike guy from SMB, and a lot more, if only half of them could be developed to play (or move) like Lu Dort of Canada at the very least, that would be a great thing for Gilas/PBA in the long run.

Wingspan has a lot do with it. Just compare him with CJ Perez. Same height. Perez is probably more explosive. Better handles and shooting. But despite this Perez has not been effective recently. The main difference I think is Abueva has a much longer wingspan than Perez. This allows Abueva to guard SFs even in Fiba while Perez can’t. Perez is pigeonholed at SG. But his shaky handles, decision making and outside shooting for a guard, makes him less effective at high level comp. Lassiter is also an example. Despite being 6’2/6’3 he has a good wingspan allowing him to guard SFs in Fiba.
