Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Wait a minute. Dwight flat out said that he was not going to play in the Asian Games: https://sports.inquirer.net/527127/no-dwight-ramos-for-gilas-pilipinas-in-asian-games

How could he have asked for the moon? Was it during the WC, or between the WC and Asian Games?

I agree non of the B league and KBL pinoy players were released for the Asian Games. If that were the case we could have seen AJ Edu, Rhenz Abando, Carl Tamayo, Kiefer Ravena and Ray Parks together with Dwight. Japan didnt even send their best players to the AG because the B league was firm that it would only release players for FIBA events and they went as so far to map out scheduled breaks to release their players for national team duties during FIBA windows.

Let's see if the PBA doesn't force itself without committing to the program. They committed for the WC windows, let's see if they follow through in succeeding big tournaments like the OQT, the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup, and the 2027 WC. If they want to be involved, they need to commit, adjust the sked if necessary.

Also, let's see if the overseas guys. Money or not, we need them for youth. Our best young players are in college or overseas. I'm not counting players like Ken Tuffin, Will Navarro, Jamie Malonzo, and Calvin Oftana, because they're 26-27, which is prime years, although they're relatively new players in the PBA. The players mentioned should still be in consideration, though.

So according to the released schedule for the Commissioner's cup the elimination round will run from Nov. 5 up until Jan. 14. And so depending on how the playoffs will playout the PBA will again have around 2 to 3 weeks to assemble and prepare a team for the February 2024 FIBA Asia cup qualifiers lol. The PBA/SBP still being true to their cramming culture that is unless the SBP will send out a team of non PBA players (College + pinoy imports).

Well, maybe Dwight changed his mind after that announcement that he won't play in the Asian Games & thought of the idea of playing in the Asiad if the price is right. I don't know but of course I wish this report that Dwight asked for the moon to play in the Asiad isn't true.

Well, that is what the PBA did in each of the window qualifiers of the 2019 FIBA World Cup & 2023 FIBA World Cup - the league took a 2-week break in each window qualifiers to give Gilas time to prepare. That was also what Japan's B-league & other pro leagues did to prepare their respective national team's for the window qualifiers. Its not like they prepared for a month or more in each of the window qualifiers.

I don't know if Al Panlilio & other SBP officials realised this: that our B-league, KBL & college Gilas prospects are available during the months of June, July, August becoz these leagues are on their off-season. These players can form a team/ pool & train for at least 1 month in that period & play in the Jones Cup which is usually held either in July or August.

I hope Panlilio realises this,. Or am I expecting too much from an extremely incompetent SBP president to come up with such an idea?

This is new and surprising to me. Care to share links?

I'd argue that Dwight was one of our most valuable players especially during the last WC. Williams I can understand he's easy to throw under the bus given that he's in eligible anyway and even Kai who was less than stellar lately. But Dwight?

Why is it that I have this feeling that among those who attended the meeting - RSA, MVP, Long Hair, Ricky Vargas, Willie Marcial & Al Panlilio, its was Panlilio & Vargas who didn't have any inputs?

I won’t be surprised if Panlilio and Vargas are just as incompetent as businessmen. They strike me as those pricks from the higher ups who delegate all their work to their assistants.

i also feel that panlilio and vargas hogged all the credit despite having no contribution whatsoever

In other words, masyadong pabida-bida lang si Panlilio akala mo maraming alam

I was listen to the PBA Motoclub on this and Rico was hearing like five names accused of being the ones asking for the moon so who the hell knows, other than Mikey obviously.

Thanks a lot to our big mouthed big wigs it's open season on our Pinoy imports now.

Not really sure it's wise throwing our best guards/ bigmen under the bus. Unless they're really confident they can win without them.

And their assistants are incompetent as well.

For me, Panlilio has done more harm than good to Gilas especially during the Asian Games. Remember the 60 or 37-player list being submitted by SBP to the Asian Games organizing committee in which Abueva & Terrence Romeo's names were not listed hence these players were replaced? I think Panlilio is among the culprits of such a blunder.

Is he reliable? On the scale of Snow to Homer where does he sit?

I trust the blogger to be honest, but since narinig lang naman nya itong issue from another source, we really can't be sure of its reliability.

Well, I hope nga its not true. We all know how important Dwight Ramos is to our national team.

With Al "Panlinlang" Panlilio at the helm as SBP head, SBP is starting to look like the Basketball Association of the Philippines(BAP) during the 90's to mid-2000's. BAP was ran by people who were too incompetent & played too much politics which were the reason for its disbandment & being replaced by SBP.

The PBA do have some depth in talent. Scottie, Perez, June Mar, Newsome, Oftana, JB (as NP), and Malonzo, Navarro, and hopefully Schonny and Tuffin. Maybe Bolick.

Thing is, the PBA guys lack rim protection with Japeth retiring, which is why we need AJ, shooting, which is what we need Parks and/or Heading for, and size and talent at the 4, which is why Carl and AJ shouldn't be thrown under the bus.

Honestly, when Vargas mentioned that detail of payment, I half-expected that the exports would have been the target, turn the crowd against the exports. And now there it is with that rumor. At least Chua is still open to our exports playing for us.

Cant wait for the mvp group to be ousted, say what you will against him but when push comes to shove Chua will put pride aside and do anything to get results, something mvps cronies cant seem to get over with.

to be fair chua is like vince mcmahon and is willing to put bitter feelings and pride aside for results (i.e. Abueva)

Panlilio and Vargas on the other hand are total @holes
