Sadly, that ship has sailed.

Still, we do have other good coaches. Goldwin Monteverde of UP, Jeff Napa of NU, Charles Tiu (although it looks like he's been slipping a bit).

They should at least try to revisit how he does player development.

Yes, it's all about player/team development with him. He prefers younger players then molds them. The guys are not necessarily the best when it comes to talent, but they must fit the system. Sum over parts, that's why his teams that look inferior on paper beat superior teams.

This type of development requires patience and more work. It's in contrast to strategies that go with quick fixes.

Wish we consistently discover local talent like Belmonte, Abando, Japheth, & Arwind. I believe these are the types of "athletes" that will make us competitive in world competition.

If we want to be competitive beyond asia.. not only do we have to consistently discover local talents like them but we also have to consistently discover those types of talents way earlier and put them in position to get into D1 or europe by college age.

Tactically, Tab truly is heads above other coaches. His defensive philosophy in games is his specialty. But yes, without the support of the major stakeholders, he will be destined to fail.

We should have already been in the 2016 Olympics. We can only imagine if he had JMF, Japeth and other marquee SMC players during the 2015 FIBA Asia. We would most likely have defeated China in that Finals game.

The current basketball landscape just does not fit a Tab Baldwin so we are better off with another coach. Unless Tim Cone can dedicate himself as the full time NT coach, I think having an international calibre foreign coach groom the younger coaches such as Ayo or Monteverde as his assistants is the proper way to move forward.

agreed playing in the UAAP, NCAA route will just put a cap on the potential of these guys.

They have to exposed their NIL too,so that they would have some seed money when they go overseas.

Hope we'll see Kevin Quiambao suiting up for Gilas in the February window of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers. The 22-year old 6-foot-5 forward is really ripe for the Gilas senior team. He is definitely the best college player in the country today. He has been the vital cog of La Salle's good showing in the ongoing UAAP basketball season & has really polished his 3-pt shooting. I think he's perfect for the small forward position in the national team.

I think Calvin Oftana at 22 yrs old wasn't this impressive judging from the level of competition in the NCAA at that time compared to the level of competition in the UAAP at present.

The talent that needs to be signed to this kind of contract is top-tier talent, like Juan GDL, Baltazar, Dwight. This way, the PBA will be forced to take the leftovers as top picks. Sure, it may result in weak draft classes, but anything to ensure cooperation with the national team. If your teams can't lend, we'll have to deprive you of future talent as well.

in theory, im with you but lets be realistic here. was there any agreement, signed on the line, that PBA is suppose to lend their players on____ games? or is this only done on the fly? i dont want to compare PBA to the NBA or any other org as they are an entity by themselves. I think, and its just me, if SBP right now told PBA all FIBA games you will rep the country and PBA actually agrees, I think we will have a better program or atleast better planning. i would like to see SBP go out in the open and say (this bit is just for discussion) the next 2 SEA games UAAP will form a team. all qualifiers for the next 4 years the B league and KBL boys will play, actually world cup and Asian games (if qualified) for the next 4 years PBA will form the team, and ___ tournaments MPBL\NBL will form a team. say it now in the open with the admins of these leagues behind Al Panlilio.i bet, these orgs will try their best, move around their sched if needed, just to have the best result because everyone knows its their brand on the line and they have months\years of prep already. hindi yun, 1\2 months before the games, SBP will talk to PBA or SBP will reachout to b league teams to lend players.

Welcome back, sir.

I posted that 2 years ago, when the PBA wasn't exactly the most available, that's why I had that sentiment.

I always believe that a national team/pool that would have a significant improvement in a 3 to 4-year cycle would be the one which players are composed mostly of players in their early 20's (it would even be nice to have a few players in their teens, say 18 & 19 years of age) & such players have to train, practice & play together as a team in a 4-year cycle in order to establish cohesion/chemistry. In this regard, here are the Pinoy players whom I think should make up the Gilas pool in the next 4 years:

Kai Sotto
AJ Edu
Geo Chiu
Carl Tamayo
Mason Amos
Francis Lopez
Kevin Quaimbao
Dwight Ramos
Thirdy Ravena
Rhenz Abando
Jordan Heading
CJ Cansino
Mark Belmonte
SJ Belangel
RJ Abarrientos
Evan Nelle

Notice that among these players, not one is playing in the PBA at this point. These are players playing in the B-league, KBL & local college basketball. Well, I am not really big on PBA players becoz they will always have issue on "availability". I prefer national team prospects who would be available most of the time. While PBA can adjust its schedule & can take a 2-week break for every window qualifiers of both FIBA Asia Cup & FIBA World Cup, would the PBA take a break for at least one month during the FIBA or international basketball season which is from mid-June to mid-September time frame? This is something that our Gilas players playing in the B-league & KBL will not have any problem becoz those leagues are in their off season during the months of June, July, August & September. Available ang mga players na yan during that period. I think our college players will also be available during the months of June, July & August.

My point here is making the Gilas team/pool gather together, train, practice, scrimmage & play international basketball in a yearly basis during the aforementioned months. Gilas can play in the Jones Cup which is usually held either in July or August. If the team/pool can train & play for at least 6 weeks every year, aside of course from training & playing during the qualifying windows (say 2 weeks per window) of Asia Cup & World Cup, then in a 4-year cycle, the pool can already establish enough cohesion & chemistry. That during the 2027 FIBA World Cup, kahit mag train yung team ng mga 5 to 6 weeks lang prior to the competition, bastante na yung preparation na yun ng team simply becoz that team would have developed chemistry & cohesion during the 4-year cycle.

With majority of these players only in their early 20's (only Thirdy, Heading, Dwight Ramos, & Abando are in their mid-20's), I think the improvement of the team as a whole would be very significant becoz the players themselves being mostly in their early 20's are also expected to improve so much. So individually & as a team, there would be significant improvement.

I think a team whose player average is 23 years old is expected to improve more than a team whose player average is 28 yrs old.

I know that Thirdy doesn't have a lot of fans here but honestly, I haven't given up on him. I think Thirdy can be like a Chris Newsome. Thirdy can be a defensive specialist at the 2-spot complimented with his slashing & fastbreak finishes.

Thirdy of course isn't a Dwight Ramos or a CJ Perez offensively but if he can play the role of a defensive stopper just like a Chris Newsome does, then I think Thirdy can be serviceable to Gilas.

I remember Dwight being compared with Thirdy on who was better during the Ateneo days. Dwight has come a long way

I was actually mocked when I suggested Dwight will be better than Kobe Paras, when that 23 for 23 list came out
in January 2020 had a conversation with Tab, he suggested Dwight is the best guard in the Philippines, I didn't believe him, not so unbelievable now.

I remember way back in 2020 & 2021 a poster here saying that Dwight Ramos is being overhyped by some posters here. I wonder what that poster here has to say now?

About Dwight Ramos, I actually didn't expect much from Dwight Ramos, though I expected him to be serviceable for Gilas. Of course nobody was expecting naman that Dwight would be as an explosive a scorer as a Justin Brownlee or a Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. My expectation on Dwight was he would be a slightly less inferior on defense than a prime Gabe Norwood but with a significantly better offensive game than Norwood, which I think would be good enough for Gilas.

He was the best Gilas guard in the World Cup by a country mile, that's for sure.

I think it was some sort of a blessing in disguised that Dwight Ramos wasn't available in the Asian Games as with his absence, Calvin Oftana got the much needed playing time & opportunity as the team's top local small forward. Though his stats in the Asian Games is far from being eye-popping - only 6.4 pts & 3.4 rebs a game, I think Oftana played some decent defense out there & delivered some clutch baskets in some crucial games, in particular Gilas very close win over Iran in the quarters.

Oftana is a good team player,he did what he was good at,he accepted his supporting role on the system.

Theres a reason why his b league team and Gilas was losing when he was the top guard
