Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

  • Thread starter Thread starter IPC2
  • Start date Start date
I think we and the SBP should be asking this question: Of this Asian Games team, apart from Ross, JB, and Ange, who among this team will still be good enough by 2025 and 2027? Because if there are many, we need to replace them with younger players and get them acclimated with those who remain. If we have too many old players, paulit-ulit na roster turnover 'to (there will be repeated roster turnovers).

I think Oftana will be good enough for both years. Scottie and CJ can still be decent by 2025, since both turn 32 by the end of that year. Of those born 1991 and earlier, who do we think can sustain a good level of play by 2025 and 2027?

Ross? Maybe U mean Newsome?

I feel after the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup, we need to replace players like Perez, Newsome, Kiefer.

Players like Abando, Heading would still be good by 2027. I say we try players like Schonny Winston. Aaron Black, Alec Stocktom if any of them wud be good enough fir the FIBA game.

I really meant Ross. I included him along with Ange and Brownlee because they're the FIBA ineligibles.

Ah OK. I get it.

I think Junmar, Oftana, Perez, Newsome, Thompson wud be good enough by 2025. But after that, it's time we retire Junmar, Newsome. Perez from the national team.

Yeah, maybe we should take it on a step-by-step basis (my initial approach is, think only of 2027). Think 2025 first, then 2027. Maybe majority of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup squad will have developed enough chemistry with any new additions, as well as able to stay on for 2027.

But I don't know. Maybe a lot of these Asian Games guys would still be good for 2025, and we might have to replace majority of them due to age along the way to 2027 qualification.

I have a question regarding Filipino Citizenship..... we have already a couple of Naturalized Basketball Players, does this mean that their kids will have eligibility of Being Natural-Born Filipino? Just in case their kids would like to play BBall in the future
Any Law Experts here?

a child of a naturalized citizen of the Philippines is a Filipino citizen by descent, but they are not a natural-born Filipino citizen. They are still consider local.

A child born to a Filipino citizen (natural-born or naturalized) at the time of that kid's birth is natural-born. A child of a naturalized citizen but the Filipino parent was not a citizen at the time of the child's birth, refer to what zairex said.

So we saw two different versions of Gilas in the World Cup and Asian Games. So lets just say Brownlee is our designated naturalized player for now, what do you guys think is our strongest line up for the upcoming tournaments?

Here are age charts of the pools for the WC and Asiad:

1985: Ross (ineligible)
1987: Japeth, Marcio
1988: Abueva, Brownlee (NP)
1989: Tautuaa (ineligible), Erram, June Mar
1990: Newsome
1991: Alas
1992: Romeo, Pogoy, Clarkson (NP), Perkins (ineligible)
1993: Parks, Scottie, Kiefer, Perez
1995: Arvin
1996: Heading, Oftana, Malonzo, Thirdy
1997: Kouame (NP)
1998: Abando, Ramos
2000: Edu
2001: Tamayo
2002: Kai

Now, limiting it to those who made the final lineup:

1985: Ross (ineligible)
1987: Japeth, Marcio
1988: Brownlee (NP)
1989: June Mar
1990: Newsome
1991: Alas
1992: Pogoy, Clarkson (NP)
1993: Scottie, Kiefer, Perez
1995: Arvin
1996: Oftana, Malonzo
1997: Kouame (NP)
1998: Abando, Ramos
2000: Edu
2002: Kai

Kind of an old pool, since the average age is 29.6 if we just limit it to the guys that made it, and there's a lot of age variance. We will need to select who among those born 1993 and before should be retained for the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup and the 2027 World Cup.

Tim Cone was truly the brains behind this historic tournament win. He shown that he is very good at adjusting between games and on the fly. His main skill is that if he already observes that something is not working, he will not be stubborn and force his ways unlike his predecessor. He finally gave Koaume major minutes and our defense was impenetrable. He drastically reduced triangle possessions, and if one offensive set does not work, he has additional aces up his sleeve.

I think the other major thing that really helped both Tim Cone and the players is them getting acclimated and used to the FIBA type of game. The players and the coaching staff have been away from the PBA game for multiple months now. Despite some of our players just being added to the pool due to player unavailability, the main core and the coaches have been soaking up FIBA experience for multiple months now (Thompson, Fajardo, Japeth, Brownlee, Newsome, Oftana, Koaume, etc.)

Before the Asian Games, there was the Euro trip, the international tuneup games and of course the best preparation you could ever get: playing/coaching in the Basketball World Cup.

I think the results would have been drastically different to our demise if they just came off a PBA conference. In the whole tournament, we rarely saw the typical PBA player bad habits such as travelling due to lifting of pivot foot during first step blowbys, the unnecessary handchecking to contain defenders leading to foul trouble, and the too much sagging of off shooters.

We now observe and celebrate what most people have been saying in the forums, that preparation time, good coaching and good international exposure will give good results.

Moving forward, I think Tim Cone has proved that he can be our national team coach. However for this to work, he really has be fulltime with Gilas, and if this is not possible. then I think we really need to get a fulltime international coach with good FIBA experience.

quit it with all the negativity robert, you'll never be taken seriously here for your outlandish takes

That’s a fact bro… if Mikey is a local in fiba, he will leave for Japan for sure, same with Cstand… but they can’t… You see almost all 1st round pick of PBA today are fiba ineligibles… because PBA teams know they were not leaving in the PBA anytime…

Coach Time Cone is the greatest coach right now, of course he is better than chot reyes, he is better than any philippine coach right now.. again he is the best coach and greatest coach now.. winningest PBA coach.. so let's stop the slight chot reyes banter because truly tim cone is the greatest period...

anyways, getting that of my chest, i would love a shot at a match with a full strength Japan team.. and I think we can do that next year.. before the OQT, both our national teams will be on training already.. let's arrange a friendly.. I would love to really see that..

and I want a fully committed Tim Cone to coach the national team and have all the players available that he wants at his disposal.. With a well prepared National Team under Tim Cone, I do believe we will beat Japan hands down..

For the 2025 FIBA Asia window qualifiers & tournament proper, this would be my hypothetical pool:

Bigs:
Kai Sotto, AJ Edu, Junmar, Carl Tamayo, Mason Amos, Jamie Malonzo ( I believe Malonzo is more of a 4 than a small forward).

Small Forwards:
Dwight Ramos, Calvin Oftana, Will Navarro,

Shooting Guards/2-Guards:
CJ Perez, Chris Newsome, Rhenz Abando, Jordan Heading

Point Guards:
Iskati Thompson, Kiefer Ravena, Schonny Winston

Naturalized player: Justin Brownlee

Also worth consideration in the pool would be Justin Baltazar (if only there's no politics), Francis Lopez, RJ Abbarientos, Ken Tuffin, Aaron Black.

Chua on suggestions for Asia Cup at OQT: https://x.com/sonrdINQ/status/1711261477393600811?s=20

"Actually, andun palang kami sa (China), I was telling people that we have to plan for it now.

We have to know the schedules. Kung kukuha pa ba ng PBA players. Ano ba next step. Kung kukuha ba ng UAAP players? Kailangan planuhin."

Wow, some foresight from Alfrancis Chua. I feel that he's gonna turn us around on him. And the language he used, looks open to calling up our overseas players, since "kukuha pa ba" was used in reference to PBA players and UAAP players.

I love LH

we should take advantage of this high that we have from winning the GOLD in the Asian Games.. seems all sectors are onboard.. Alfrancis Chua and the SMC block seems to be very helpful in this endeavor.. it now seems to be that the ball is now on SBPs court.. hahahahaha

eto na, dito na magkakaalaman if Al Panlilio and Sonny Barrios can take it to the next step.. kapag wala.. ay protesta na to...

we already have the dates for the events next year - FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers and FIBA OQT...

FIBA Asia Cup
Window 1 - 22 Feb 2024
Window 2 - 21 Nov 2024
Window 3 - 20 Feb 2025

FIBA OQT
2-7 July 2024

I don't know what SBP still needs for this.. start talking... start planning... kahit wala pa coach.. talk to the leagues.. talk to the players abroad.. have formal one-on-one conversations... at least PBA, UAAP, NCAA can plan ahead as well..

I expect something within the month... first even is Feb next year.. that means at most January a team should already be in place for the first window.. and that means latest by december there should be a national team head coach already.. October na ngayon.. 2 months na lang.. SBP should do something already... again I expect something this month..

or else... hahahaha....

So B.League and KBL players are out of equation now?

So B.League and KBL players are out of equation now?

I probably don't think so. He said, "kukuha pa ba" in terms of PBA players and UAAP players, which means when would we still need them. I don't think he ruled the overseas guys out.

Fiba sanctions...club team must release players

I mean this one:

He mentioned PBA and UAAP but nothing about overseas players.

We should put the best team possible in big tournaments, even if it means that the PBA will have less spots in the national team.
