Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

  • Thread starter Thread starter IPC2

Thw Gold medal has really extra meaning to me , yes it truly is if not one of the biggest, the biggest win for Philippine basketball in history ( from a significance standpoint), that's no exaggeration. (Not referring to levels), so let me.just get that out of the way . IVE been raving about the win and celebrating in other channel mediums where my identity is disclosed . So there is no lack of celebration there
IBN isn't really my avenue to openly share what everyone is already saying. And as such people get the impression, I'm just being negative. ( take example the Kai thread, as promising as a prospect he legitimately is , I see.no point in making it a praise thread we can openly send praise personally in other Channels, so I'd rather contribute and limit sharing to real objective steps that are valuable for discussion, ideal development pathways etc . Speaking of which after all is said and done despite the gold which rightfully deserves all praise (period). We were still down by 9 points vs China in 1 minute to go , with 3 Naturalized players and then having zero NPs , and if you look at the rosters , there are certainly more homegrown elite players on their roster than Gilas, so let's not lose sight of the true status of Philippine basketball lack of ability to develop players despite the huge win.

Not sure about this one.

We owe CTC our gratitude but, objectively speaking, is he the right guy to lead Gilas all the way to the 2027 WC?

I’m conflicted because I really loved his defense-first approach in the Asiad as well as the better team ball.

The other part of me thinks a full-time coach with the same capability is needed like Coach Vucinic.

Cone previously said that he is a type of guy that cannot multitask....if that so then he needs to give up coaching Ginebra.

The gold medal game was the silver anniversary of the bronze.

Take a bow, Earl Timothy Cone. International Man of Mastery. National treasure.

Time for SBP to start searching for a new coach, then. Next window is in February, 4 months from now. Need a new coach as early as now. Hopefully, yes, someone defensively-oriented.

Ive been saying this for a while now and I still believe the future is in youth development but saying it after such an important victory looks off for so many reasons. Its not like anything is under a rush except maybe Ange's possible exception if he leaves for Europe. The rest can be said in a later date. Being so negative right now makes it look like you cant enjoy anything as it looks like you can't enjoy the most important victory in probably most important members lifetimes.

About that, Ange is now in Europe. He's with C' Chartres Basket Masculin, a third- division team: https://www.instagram.com/p/CxGgbe0IJMS/?hl=en

He signed 3 weeks ago.

may I ask you sir this question - where do we draw the line in considering a player a homegrown or not?

for me, I will consider Kouame as a homegrown because here in the Philippines where he learn almost everything about basketball. a high school and college graduate in the Philippines. this is the same reason that I will consider Michael Philips, Tyler Tio and many FSAs as homegrowns.

Agree, similar, I would extend it those who played for batang Gilas like AJ, I know it's mot technically home grown, but essentially a SBP program took the time to invest in AJ , by including him in Youth team.
so yeah as weird as it may sound I include our NBTC program of bringing players from overseas to be involved in a Local program (NBTC) as partly home grown
college fil foreigners are home grown.

essentially any time a local SBP program contributes to recruiting a player from high school age , it's part of a homegrown program (as work and investment is being used to improve pipeline.

What is not is recruitment of grown professional into the program from overseas in their mid 20s , 25 yrs old, thats essentially buying a team.

I would consider three general categories: home developed, early integrated and late integrated. For home developed I would say Kouame and maybe Diouf come to mind. IRC both learned to play ball here. For early integrated, that would be Edu, Philips and Ballungay. Edu was not developed here but him being integrated with the national team at 17 counts for something. Philipps and Ballungay came over here with their skills and athleticism but that at a stage where they are young and not fully developed basketball wise has to count for something. Guys like Brownlee and JC were integrated to the national team when they were already at their prime.

I would say Bobby Ray is more of early integrated rather than home developed because he developed his skills to a level of a 3 star NCAA recruit in the US. I would say if we can put more of our HS guys into US prep programs or similar like with Gemao the better. Speaking of him, is there an update on his application for the US prep school?

That's why I cannot consider the likes of Mark Caguioa, JJ Helterbrand, Ryan Reyes and Alex Cabagnot as homegrowns. Yes, they were all born and raised as kids here in the Philippines but they were developed in the US. I mean their formative years were all in the US (high school and college).

I very much remember the 1998 Asian Games in which the RP Centennial team brought home the bronze medal. That RP vs. Kazakhstan battle for the bronze medal was an emotional game for the Pinoys, expecially coach Tim Cone who felt that he let the country down after failing to make it to the finals. But even the battle for the bronze was a hard fought game for the Pinoys against the tough & stubborn Kazakhs. Good thing our boys pulled it through. I remember there was some drama after the game & Jojo Lastimosa had a sort of falling out with coach Tim. though I think Jolas & coach Tim had immediately patched things up after that.

Good to see coach Tim finally bagged his much desired Asian Games basketball gold medal. Perhaps after the 1998 Asian Games, coach Tim thought he will never ever win an Asian Games basketball gold medal.

Coach Cone has cemented his place in Philippine basketball with that historic win. I have a feeling he'll seriously consider leaving the national team job after that great win.

Aside from not wanting to risk tarnishing his legacy in the future like his predecessor, that gold medal will be hard to replicate/top. Maybe if he was a bit younger he'll consider.

Essentially there is very valid reasons why some get:
exceptions , Greg and Newsome- they developed locally in cillege and
eligible by playing for Batang Gilas ( Wright, Gamber , Zain, Spencer etc) and of course AJ (passport befor 16)

Totally sound and reasonable.

Reason I'm confident Philips and Ballungay will get exempted

Defense wins championships. That defense by Newsome on RHJ was key. And so was Ange's.

Having said that, defense requires athleticism/length on par with the opponent. It is on the world-level stage where we will always have problems. I think Edu was our lone bright spot when it came to defense in the world cup, and thank God he's young and doesn't take a NP spot.

For us to form a world-level team (a notch above Asian level or on par with China/Japan), we would need guys like Edu, Ange, Newsome in terms of length and athleticism. Who in our pipeline fits their mold, especially homegrowns? It won't be easy but we have to cultivate that pipeline. Young guys like Lebron Lopez needs to get the national-team reps as much as possible.

in the future hope SBP starts courting ron harper jr. he can play 3/4 for us the same way brownlee.. we saw how effective a 3/4 can do in international setting..

With SBP's consistent "usad pagong" attitude, maybe we will have a new coach 1 week before the February window qualifier.

Maybe… but will sbp will take their cases to fiba to grant them exemption? Once they will be both local players, B League will say hello to them… and pba will lose potential superstars once they will both local players…

quit it with all the negativity robert, you'll never be taken seriously here for your outlandish takes

I think despite his age, Chris Newsome wud be serviceable for Gilas in the next 2 years. I'm really impressed with his defense on Rondae Hollis-Jefferson in that gold medal game vs. Jordan. And he scored 13 pts which was significant in a low scoring game like that. I think he, Brownlee & Kouame were the difference makers in that game. Newsome I think is the best defensive 2-guard in the Philippine basketball right now.

Huwag lang syang ma injured, he wud be fine with Gilas in the next 2 years.

I think we and the SBP should be asking this question: Of this Asian Games team, apart from Ross, JB, and Ange, who among this team will still be good enough by 2025 and 2027? Because if there are many, we need to replace them with younger players and get them acclimated with those who remain. If we have too many old players, paulit-ulit na roster turnover 'to (there will be repeated roster turnovers).

I think Oftana will be good enough for both years. Scottie and CJ can still be decent by 2025, since both turn 32 by the end of that year. Of those born 1991 and earlier, who do we think can sustain a good level of play by 2025 and 2027?
