Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

JF was able to defend the paint in WC. The drop defense was effective because of our guards able to fight of the screen better. Which Oftana and Perez were not good at last night. Thats why even the defense strategy the same the personnel and focus was not.

Lets not kid ourselves. From what I saw it was only the DR game that we got away with playing JF. We were just lucky that DR was focused on playing through KAT. In many other games the lead got away when JF was there. There were too many open shots when he was on the court.

Part of Jordans counter run was Freddys two layups against JF. JF was also unwilling to contest an open guard at the 3.

pretty much, after the DR game JF became a non-factor and/or liability

More like NO need to pay heaps for an NBA mercenaries.
just tap Kouame or Brownlee

sorry wrong trend

I rewatch our game against Angola. You got to tell me when did Angola score on JF drop coverage. its true that our biggest lead was tied was when JF was in the floor but not his fault. To be fair the biggest lead was when Kai was on the floor in the 4th quarter. But also not entirely his fault either.

None of the open shot made by Angola from the outside was JF fault as he wasn't involve with the play. Their was one play that JF was involve that Angola scored on mid range. But it was not JF fault. I let you find it in the 2nd half.

Let be fair and rewatch the game. The reason again why JF weakness on PnR was not exposed so much because of Pogoy, Thompson, JC or dwight fighting the screen to keep the dribbler not to take a quick shot. Which has been the focus of Chot in WC is in our defense and offense was fully on JC.

Which is BS given what we learned from our PGs in the WC. He should have been invited then. Maybe we could have won one more game..

Yeah, I think I know what U meant, that crucial game against Angola in which guards Iskati Thompson & CJ Perez couldn't bring down the ball under the heavy backcourt pressure by the Anngolans which resulted to costly turnovers. That's the possible downside if U got combo guards or non-legit point guards bringing down the ball under backcourt pressure by the opponent.

It's still significantly different having legit or natural point guards bringing down the ball.

That backcourt press thrown by the Angolans against us would easily be addressed by point guards like Johnny Abarrientos, Jimmy Alapag, Jason Castro.

diba, there are scenarios we cant control (i.e. home cooking), so as much as possible, win every winnable game. Im surprised that the fans have yet to turn against CTC, either his BGSM popularity is carried over to Gilas, still in a honeymoon period, or Cone is too tact unlike his predecessor.

Maybe all of the above. But make coach Tim commit one blunder after another & for sure Gilas fans would start to ridicule him. But I don't think that's gonna happen becoz as coach Tim said prior to the Asian Games, he won't coach Gilas beyond the Asian Games.

After this Asiad, SBP better start looking for a coach that is interested in a long-term project, build up for 2027, get a system good for international play, and get as many players as possible that can play in 2027 (meaning get as many players that are not too old for that). Similar to Germany's 3-year project.

Correct. It should be a pool of players practicing/playing/scrimmaging together for a 4-year cycle.

The ideal No. of players in that pool should be around 24. Having too many players in the pool will also have some detrimental effect.

Gilas drastically reducing triangle sets in the first quarter. I've only counted two possessions where they ran sets out of a vanilla triangle. They mostly ran a spread out offense where there are more possibilities of three point shots being taken, and they are not afraid of taking shots early in the shotclock. Unlike their first 3 games, they also mixed up their defense, going from a full court press to a 2-3 zone. Good adjustments from Tim Cone.

Granted that the opponent is significantly weaker though thus Gilas showing their superiority is a given, I think Tim Cone is looking more like a FIBA coach in that first quarter.

I thought we only show it on semis pa..Ginebra doesnt really set on triangle mainly..

Cone has been tweaking his system over recent years to modernize it

Actually 16 - 18 players are already enough...

After the draft the possible Gilas pool did improve a bit but most of the bigs need that FIBA exemption

FIBA eligible:
Deschon Winston
Kenneth Tuffin
Ricci Rivero
Kemark Carino

Needs FIBA exemption:
Zavier Lucero
Luis Villegas
Keith Datu
Christian David
Brandon Bates

Is the Hagop rule enforced in 3x3 competitions?

Those ineligibles would make good fits as they are all stretch bigs.

Arvin Tolentino is thrash, don't ever include that dude in any gilas iteration. Chris Ross and Cio are retireable right now still like our chances againts Iran tomorrow. Sa China if no cooking show we have a slight shot haha

Agree people were hyping Tolentino because of what he has done with Northport where he has the green light to shoot, the guy is able to put up points because he is their best shooter but he is a defensive liability at the wing position. Ross and Lassitier have slowed down and I think this should be the last time they are called up for the national team. But Im hoping that they get past Iran tomorrow and advance to the semifinals. And if somehow Gilas wins against China in the semifinals to me that is equivalent of a gold medal already lol

I was one of those wanting Arvin to go to Gilas as a 6'5" wing who can score, but now, I have Will Navarro, Jamie Malonzo, Calvin Oftana, Francis Lopez, and maybe guys like Caelum Harris above him at the 3. Defense is key at that position.

As for Ross and Marcio, yeah, it's time for them to give way to younger players, starting in February. Ross is 38 (and ineligible anyways), and Marcio is 36.

But but...the Duke and Rhode Island try-out invitations.

not the same in 5x5. simple, you have passport of your country and reside for at least a year and your good to go as local.. in 3x3 OQT, we parade tautuaa and munzon who are both ineligibles in 5x5 same in 2018 3x3 world cup where CS and pringle are 5x5 ineligibles

I wonder if we pry Ben Mbala out and have him switch nationalities, will FIBA allow him to play in the PHL 3x3 squad even if he had already played for Cameroon's 5x5 NT
