Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

And of those 30+ stars, I think only June Mar is really irreplaceable, maybe Terrence. The other PBA irreplaceables are Malonzo and Navarro as 6'5"+ wings, and they're 27 and 26 respectively. Navarro's our best man-to-man defender at the 3 spot after Dwight.

After the Asian Games, time for SBP to lay down a real long-term program leading up to the 2027 WC, and hopefully develop our first FIBA-eligible player in the Euroleague and/or the NBA or the G-League.

I think that's what everybody has been clamoring for.

I'm envisioning a 24-man pool Gilas pool that would be kept intact for a 4 to 5-year cycle & that would comprise our national team that would play FIBA qualifiers & actual tourneys & other international competitions in that cycle. I think it would be better that about half of that pool would be at the 24-year-old-and-below category & we limit the number of 30+ years old player in that pool.

And here's my strong suggestion: Pwede wag nang galawin ang pool na yan, wag nang palitan o dagdagan ang mga players as much as possible. If there would be player changes in the pool, it should be minimal. In this way, mas maging cohesive ang team/pool natin & would have a better chemistry.

AFAIK, they are qualified. Qatar is the sole host, and unlike Indonesia, they have a history of success in the Asian region, especially during 2001–2005, when they were a legit Top 5 team in Asia. If we are also using the standards that were set by FIBA for Indonesia, which is a top 8 Asian team, they were in the quarterfinals seven times out of the past 10 Asia Cups.

Maybe they will but they should not granted POT 1 spot… it will be another easy route for teams in Groups A and B since Qatar is not that powerhouse in basketball in world level, and it will have multiple group of death scenarios that multiple competitive teams will face off early… the reason why France booted out very early this competition…

USA lost in fiba World Cup is not just because they bringing lesser talent NBA caliber players… but they loss because how they play throughout the tournament… they didn’t box out properly, they didn’t advise how fiba rules is different compare to nba rules and they didn’t knew that no 3 sec defensive violation in fiba unlike in nba, they keep on switching even its not needed too much… this video explains everything how bad team USA plays throughout the tournament…

If willing, i think konov might be ready for the senior team with a cameo here and there

SMC Gilas trying to make amends with fans by having fan interaction and photo op session with the players.

SMC SBP is more grounded, while SMC PLDT is the elitist kind.

I guess SMC understands the hate of the fans. Making amends with fans is equally important as practice ..why waste one day of practice just to have fan interaction and with Gilas girls

And they will not be selling any tickets in their tune up game against the LG Sakers next week

Good on SMC. Hope they retain the goodwill of the fans. At least they know the people are angry, they should alleviate it, and they're working to make amends.

I'm waiting on a program. As long as it leads to a good direction for the team in all levels, I'm willing to wait and see. I may have pre-judged them too harshly due to Letran, SMB, and Mags not being developed and constructed for international play, and outside of Tim Cone, lack of openness to adopt plays and schemes, and hire coaches, for international play. Who knows, maybe they'd construct the youth and senior teams more like Ginebra and TNT, maybe better versions.

Maybe 2.1/5.0 is the bottom for SBP's facebook page ratings lol.

No other way but up.

Like I said, SMC knows the fans, they understand their market. They have ears on the ground. Both RSA and Longhair practically came from nothing. They know the fans' "kiliti". This is at least one good thing that came out of the take over.

This is in stark contrast with typical highly-educated white-collar executives in MVP and Panlilio who are so disconnected with the masa fans.

Here's a compilation of the stats for this WC: https://hackastat.eu/en/fiba-world-cup-2023/

Interesting statlines for us:

We were 10th in DRTG at 106.3.
We allowed a true shooting percentage of 53%, good for 6th in the WC.
We allowed opponents to shoot only 32% from 3, good for 9th.
We allowed opponents to shoot 41% from the field, good for 4th.
We had the lowest AST% at 43%.
We had the 10th highest TO% at 16%.
We were 26th in 3PT% at 30%.
We were below average at offensive rebounding, grabbing only 28% of all available offensive rebounds. (ranked 21st, average 29%)
We were average at defensive rebounding, grabbing 73.7% of all available defensive rebounds. (ranked 15, average 72.9%)
We force turnovers only 12% of the time, good for 31st.

Defensive stats might have been padded by the Angola and China games, but I'll take it.

Judging from these numbers, we might have a few points of emphasis.

1. Keep up with the defense. Keep players who contest shots. Improve defensive rebounding. Build a roster concentrated on forcing turnovers, since we're gonna be undersized.

2. We need shooters. Heading, Parks (if his head is still in the game), even younger guys like Mason Amos and Renzo Competente.

3. Need ball movement to keep the defense off balance. It doesn't have to be a complex offense. We just have to learn how to move, and then pass to open cutters and shooters, and when to make the extra pass when a defender is closing out on you. Of course assists can come from isolation sets (from the perimeter or the post), but of course, the ball moves quicker than a person, and it can make life easier for the offense. Can save energy, actually.

Sorry ha, but all those stats , point to one main thing, we do not produce the same volume of world elite FIBA at the rate of others (period)

addressing the bigger issue of why we ended up with same results again. Remember all 32 teams have to deal with similar issues (lack of prep, chemistry, unavailability of players). So what's the difference? Two things.
1. We simply do not produce (whether naturalized or not) elite level players at the rate others do. Hello, others don't even need to rely on a NP. While others that use a NP have alot of them. Go figure

2. Unfamiliarity with FiBA style (Euro essentially)

Now those two points. Pa ulit ulit after one bad result after another. What program changes are being done to address them? Let me guess , WALA, for the nth time , what else is new

How could you get recruited to the US if you lack the height tho?

Japan (also challenged with height) yearly has around 5 teenagers entering the US college system, a few end up in the NBA , BTW doesn't have to be US ( many elite academies in Aus and Euro) , the thing is Japan trains (exposed to pros) their tall high school age players to make the US ( div 1 and NBA as wings/ guards) , while we train our tall HS players to be dominant bigs for Phil colleges & PBA . See the big difference and the results ( players produced)

Well unfortunately, for countries that are challenged with height, they need to exert more effort and money on their development programs to develop players for international competitions, not the case for countries like Sudan tho, remember that they just came off a civil war and a don't even have the facilities in basketball..

Ain't no way RSA and AFC came from "nothing" that's just BS lmao

Well here is the thing , there is a proven blue print pathway (div 1, academies etc ) of how to develop a world class player, no need to reinvent the wheel and try something different.
And clearly the structure of the Philippines on how it does things will NOT work.
