Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

  • Thread starter Thread starter IPC2
  • Start date Start date
Julio Lamas
Rajko Toroman
Brian Goorjan
Andrej Lemanis
Paul Henare
Nestor Garcia
Ruben Magnano

I vote for lamas, garcia, or magnano. They handled, and achieved something, using players who arent too far feom the Philippines can produce. Has toroman been coaching against good international competition for the past 5years? Parang Indonesia, and that was specifically targeted against PH. So pass. Goorjan, lemanis, and henare should be great coaches but me thinks they have to drastically change tactics if they dont have players as long as, as versatile, or as fundamentally sound as the players they handled while coaching other NTs. I bet they can do wonders, but we why nit someone who is proven in FIBa who handled a team like PH? Which is most south american countries are like except Brazil.

Someone mentioned our penchant for instant gratification and lack of patience...that's basically it.

Even the mighty USA became whipping boys when they sent ill-prepared teams. What makes us think we can do better emulating that.

What coach Yeng recently realized (but a lot of us has already been calling for), changes has to be wholistic. Improve grassroots, rules, coaching, economics, etc.

We have a promising batch of prospects in the 17-25 year old range. If we get our act together, we have about 10 years to maximize their potential. But it starts now, not 9 years from now.

It starts in their late 20s, we need more 29 year old 'rookies' /s. In all seriousness I'm glad Aj Edu was used this much at 23 years old. Hope he's a good signal that you can profit from your players just as much as the veterans like Fajardo WAY earlier.

I'm excited to see how it will look like if you pair him with young guns like Tamayo and Amos. Imagine them playing consistently together against high-level competition for 10 years.

Carl has improved his defense. I think after this WC, he will commit more to the NT. Mason might improve his defense under Tab as well. AJ with either of them would be good. Hopefully new management and coaching will see that.

Reminds me, after this Asiad, we need a new core. Retain Dwight, Kai, AJ, maybe Malonzo, Scottie, Perez. Then add some more guys. Hopefully we reintegrate guys like Heading, Quiambao, Carl, Mason, RJ, SJ, Juan GDL, Navarro, Winston, and Francis Lopez. Add some new guys too, like Mamuyac, Bahay, Harris, Konov, maybe Tuffin, then Pablo, Gagate, Demisana, maybe Kieffer Alas and Irus Chua in the future.

Then focus on getting exemptions for guys like Kouame, Koon, Phillips, Lucero, Villegas, and Ballungay.

What if Gilas will overcome Italy by more than 15 and move on the second round tomorrow?haha will your sentiments against chot and SBP be the same?haha I know this Gilas squad is capable of such feats and we have the most brilliant coach of the entire ph as our captain.haha

About Chot, I don't know. About SBP, absolutely, they should still go. It's not just about our senior team, they need to focus on youth too, which horribly underperformed last year.

I like Taiwans approach. They know they have promising teenage prospects and immediately constructed another team to give them the experience needed. Long-term diskarte (which we lack).

They really need to get Kouame for more competition or get him on a better league than the PBA.

IMO, we need Kouame to play in the PBA for at least a year or two. It will help a lot for his case to be local.

The problem here lies with the PBA people who's in charge, will they do it?Will they let Kouame play outside of SMC teams? How bout he goes to an MPBL team for two years, but be available for all tournaments.

The game was winnable. But we we’re not hitting our threes; Abando, Kiefer, Scottie, Malonzo and Perez missed wide open threes. We also turned the ball over in crucial stretches; Clarkson, Perez and even Dwight threw away the ball.

It was just an ugly game compared to the DR game.

At least we were not blown out of our building.

Makes me wonder what if the team has RJ as the sole sub-six footer there while we have Wright, Lassiter, Heading, Parks and Bolick. All of the six, while not known for their defense, are way better shooters than most in this Gilas team.

RJ and JGDL would have made a difference as additional ball-handlers and shot creators. Prior to the announcement of the lineup, I could see from a mile away that this team is poorly constructed. I didn't understand how most of the players who are imports abroad were ignored. Looks to me that the PBA wanted to make a statement that Gilas can win with a team mostly composed of PBA players. It's obviously backfiring now.

That's one of the biggest reasons I want the PBA guys in SBP gone. Pabida kasi masyado ang PBA, e. After this WC, who have they to offer apart from aging stars, Malonzo, maybe Oftana, and a young Mamuyac? The PBA's a farmers' league now.

Our best eligible guys for Gilas are mostly overseas, or in the amateur levels.

If SBP had 1% of Japanese and Taiwanese foresight, they would have already sent a Team B or Team C to the Jones Cup composed of the best collegiate players not coached by Josh Reyes. The UAAP on its own can form a formiddable team, they just need the right coach who will not poach players.

The same team should be sent to the SEAGames and other pocket tournaments like those in the middle east.

Expect the SBP to make Alfrancis Chua the program director and Tim Cone as the head coach. If you're sick and tired of Chot's DDO, get ready to watch years of Cone's antiquated triangle offense.

I go with these three as well. Go with a foreign coach that has an experience in handling teams similar to Philippines. These Latin American teams are closest to the Philippines in terms of playing style not the Europeans, not the East Asians, and not the Americans - it's the Latin Americans.

Chot Reyes on vacant Gilas job in 2020: 'No need for a foreign coach'

AS the position of Gilas Pilipinas coach remains vacant, Chot Reyes thinks that Filipinos are still very capable of being in charge.

Reyes aired his opinion on the matter during a coaching webinar organized by Hoop Coaches International, saying there is no need for the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to hire a foreign coach for Gilas at this time.

Reyes, who led the Philippines’ return to the Fiba World Cup in 2014 after a breakthrough runner-up finish in the 2013 Fiba Asia Cup, said results in past international competitions will prove that there’s no significant gap between local and foreign coaches.

“We don’t need a foreign coach,” Reyes said. “We’ve tried it before. I love Tab [Baldwin]. I love Mark Dickel. I was the one who brought Tab here. I’ve had great relationships with Rajko Toroman. And you know how close I am to Tim (Cone) and you know how close I am with coach Norman (Black). I’ve huge, huge respect for foreign coaches. But in the end, where did it take us? Where have we gone with the foreign coaches?”

Reyes made it clear that he is in favor of bringing in foreign coaches to become part of the staff, something that he used to do when he was in charge of Gilas. But in the end, Reyes said only a Filipino coach will be all heart when it comes to playing against different countries in international competition.

“What we did in our system with a Filipino coach and we made sure we had very good foreign talent in our coaching staff. In our world championship staff, I had Tab, I had Nacho Escano, I had Norman Black, all these great coaches.

"But I think the Filipino coach is the one who is going to be able to capture the heart of the Filipino. Maski gaano kagaling ‘yung foreign coach, wala siyang pusong Pinoy. At hindi nila maiintindihan ‘yun kasi tayo lang makakaintindi nun. ‘Yung talagang magpapakamatay tayo,” said Reyes.

The five-time PBA Coach of the Year admitted having so much 'puso' at one point got the Philippines in trouble in international play, obviously with the brawl during the Fiba Basketball World Cup qualifiers between Gilas and Australia last July 2, 2018 at the Philippine Arena in mind.

Reyes was suspended five games for the brawl, and was later replaced by Yeng Guiao, who coached the team until the 2019 Fiba Basketball World Cup before resigning after the Philippines finished last among 32 teams.

“Yes, minsan mapapaaway tayo and I know we’ve gone through hell and gotten so much flak for that. But kung talagang Pinoy ka, hindi ka talaga magpapatalo eh. Anong sabi natin sa Tagalog noon, patay kung patay eh. Ganun talaga eh. Kung ayaw niyo, eh di palitan niyo na lang kami. Let me ask you. Meron bang foreign coach na ganun?” Reyes said.

“Nothing against them. I think they are great for Philippine and local basketball. I think they give a lot of value especially to other upcoming coaches but in the end, just take a look at the results where the Filipino coaches have been able to take the national team,” the former Gilas coach added.

Reyes believes the most important aspect for Gilas to be successful is the full support of all the basketball stakeholders in the country. To stress his point, Reyes cited the once-a-week Gilas practices in the buildup for a major tournament.

“Whether it’s a Filipino or a local coach, the important thing is full support. Players, resources, time to practice, that’s the more important thing," he said. " Let’s get a foreign coach in and I know they are talking about [bringing in] some European coach. And then what? He will come here to practice every Monday once a week.

"Tab doesn’t even like to do that. Even Tab Baldwin doesn’t want that situation. Kukuha ka then magpa-practice ka once a week and magpa-practice ka, two weeks na lang bago mag-tournament."

Reyes agreed with the SBP’s move to create a separate Gilas pool from players taken in a special PBA draft, specifically to be trained in the run-up to the 2023 Fiba World Cup which the Philippines will co-host.

“I think that’s a good idea. That’s a good situation and good direction. But is it foreign or a local coach, why not local?" he said. "I think nasisilaw lang tayo minsan because of this great other things around it but in the end, it’s about coaching, whether foreign or local.”

Cone is best as an assistant, not a head coach.

But more than the choices, I'm concerned about SMC's "development." More interested in hoarding stars than developing them for international play and for overseas leagues. Look at Letran. Apart from Abando, they've developed nada since Willie Miller (no, Almazan doesn't count, he's ineffective in FIBA).

from this alone it's just lowkey saying that he should handle the team again, the guy has a big ego and now it's biting his ass, and if filipino coach will handle the national team again backed by foreign consultants its should not be him or his son, Monteverde is the best choice , Chot was thinking that us being the host and seeing the young talents plus the plan to bring Clarkson is enough to cover for his deficiencies but now it's all backfiring to his ego bloated face, the willie revillame of coaching is getting booed even by the home fans

i will still go for a stretch big naturalized player and hope Kouame will get an exemption, yes we do have Kai and Edu but Kai is meh while Edu is defensively good but still limited offensively

This team could've won games if it had decent ball handlers/PGs. It's so weird for Chot to pick a bunch of combo guards in Scottie, Ramos, and Kiefer when his system is heavily reliant on elite playmaking/slashing.

able to capture the heart of the Filipino? the guy is delusional. look at mainstream and social media, it is these Filipinos vomiting you out, who find you pukable. pusong Pinoy ba ang pagiging kapal muks? isn't delicadeza the more Filipino thing rather than forcing yourself on people who CLEARLY DO NOT WANT YOU? people pay good money to BOO YOU, in your own homecourt, that should be a pretty clear indicator of how you've captured the heart of the Filipino, if there's enough KAHIHIYAN in that pusong pinoy of yours.
