wow, this isn't looking good for Gilas, to many Ben Simmons situations LOL, and we're in July !

I mean literally the best 5 , say Heading, Clarkson, Parks , AJ and Kai, haven't even played a single second.

strong word even dwight isnt in the best 5 here..but I agree that these guys hopefully is in the main rotation

I think Edu isn't in game shape yet becoz of that minor sprain he sustained recently. Perhaps coach Chot doesn't want to field a not-in-game-shape AJ Edu knowing how risky it is for an injury-prone player like Edu to play while being out of game shape. Maybe in a week time Edu will be able to play.

It;s suspicious actually... Junmar also came from injury but Chot always using him... Edu came from healthy season w/ Toledo and Brisbane workouts.. And neither SBP or coaching staff says he was injured before going to Europe.... I hope that they are not mad at Edu after he signs with B-League, not w/ PBA....

Edu himself said he is injured, Sprain ankle he got it while doing workouts in australia.

Owwwsss? Is there any interview before w/ him? I hope he will be OK and be tested in next tune up games... I still want him over Japeth and Junmar because we all know his capability especially when he is healthy....

Go watch his CNN Philippines interview and Playitrighttv interview in youtube.

Analyzed is right, we were able to manage to be competitive with serbia because of twin tower lineup of kai and Ange.. with edu replacing angge's role..

I think and alot of Serbian commentator, said that its our guard play that was dominant. Ofcourse having both of Kai and Ange was a big help

his trade stock is low right now because of his injury i will not be surprised if he will be traded to one of the smc teams, with smc being poised to take over the reigns of SBP i do think he will be available for gilas, and Will also don't have a choice right now no overseas team will sign him being injured, maybe a buyout will do in case he wants to play overseas

Well, if SMC do take over, man, I hope they contribute to the development of youth teams instead of using the team for getting their players into SMC teams or as a way to feature players already with SMC. I hope I'm wrong, but viewpoint now is bad, and I think it will continue from the way Panlilio and Vargas left it.

when smc was involve in the national team during chot's first reign as the national team coach they never poached the top players of the teams that loaning out their players, its the other group who was guilty of that though i will say that it somehow benefited the national team, as the main core of the gilas teams were mostly from the MVP group, when someone like Uytengsu who sacrificed another grandslam for the sake of the national team didn't want to lend his players at one point you know there is something wrong , we all know how SMC moves they farm but they don't poached and with top college players now mostly joining overseas league the landscape has change, and yes youth development must be prioritized, the reason why most rich countries succeed in any kind of sports in international competition is because of youth development, our country is really good in individual sports but we still suck at team sports in a higher international level maybe except for the football women's team

We still don't have the talent in youth for our women's football team, though. I love the senior team, but we still need to work on scouting and talent identification. There are youth prospects in the PFF. I hear Tuloy FC has good prospects.

As to men's basketball, I was talking about SMC hoarding them for the Philippines instead of sponsoring overseas development and development for leagues outside Asia. Overseas development will be better for them, and for our NT's talent level and prestige as well. Plus, I don't have confidence in their ability to develop, partly based on how they've run the Letran seniors team. For all their resources, Abando was the only Gilas-worthy player they've developed so far. If they prove me wrong with UST and if they send players overseas for training and development up to college, great.

if i'm of those patron id rather send a very talented prospect to train overseas and be expose on a higher level of competition and if that prospect succeed and let's say being drafted by an NBA team it benefits me more as a patron, but if you will look at the current landscape not just smc but other basketball patrons would rather choose to hoard these talented players to the school or teams that they are affiliated to than funding them to succeed overseas, what im thinking is they are too afraid of the risk that they might not make it big outside, even with Kai Sotto it seem its his own initiative to try his luck outside i even remember coach tab trying to convince him to stay with ateneo, Delta sponsored a lot of talented players that he can send overseas but still he chose them to stay in the Philippines , i hope there will be one rich filipino sports patron who will sponsor talented youth for overseas development, maybe if Manny was not get too inclined with politics he was able to do so, i know he supported some good young boxing prospects and few of them even became a world champion, that is why i like what those athletes with african roots and from africa are doing , they are helping the development of the sports that they are involve with to develop their youths with talent , south sudan was not a force up until Deng started to support the national team

If they want to produce NBA prospect players, bringing top Filipino prospects in USA or Europe is a must.... No way they will be a prospect of they are staying at home...

that is the point though, if i am rich patron that supports basketball id rather bring my most talented prospect in US or Europe as it will give the best chance to be drafted in the NBA as if everything pans out my player will earn more , i will earn more and i'll be a hero in the eyes of the public by helping someone to be the first homegrown NBA player, but most of the rich sports patron in the Philippines would rather see their top talents to be in the school or teams that they are affiliated with

I think it’s something embedded in us Pinoys that we still are saddled with. In general we Pinoys dont have much of a nationalism. It’s easy to spout love for the country but time and time again many of us Pinoys favor our selves, our faimilies, our little communities over the nation’s good.

Improving Pinas and its reputation seems to abstract a concept compared to helping your alma mater have pissing rights over their rivals.

Again, if Arvin Tolentinos boosters offered him some compensation while studying in the NCAA we might have our own Yuta Watanabe right now. A smaller but more skilled one.

Hopefully, next time we have U15s or U18s another kid will catch US college scouts attention we’ll have a willing sponsor.

gilas draft was never a thing up until 2016 when TNT do not have a first round pick when most of the top prospects of sinag applied for the draft, and from not having a pick TNT was able to get Roger Pogoy one of the the top rookie prospects alongside Belo and Wright i do believe that without the gilas draft Pogoy will easily be a top 3 pick , i noticed that whenever there is a bunch of good prospects from the amateur ranks that also joined the cadet program this special draft was being implemented, though for the past 2 versions it was only the bottom 5 teams were given the chance to pick in the special draft, if overseas league did not come to picture for sure there will be another special draft for these cadet players and might be available for every team especially if the team of those who are running the show do not have a FRP, now its unfair to say that PBA do not give support to the national team except in 2011 , PBA represented Gilas in most of FIBA sanctioned competitions, even in the qualifiers for the 2019 world cup, after the pandemic most businesses were trying to recover their losses and PBA is also a business so its quite understandable that they did not participate in any post pandemic tournament , prior to the 4th window of the qualifiers and during the TAB era. but we all know what happened im just trying to point out that before the pandemic PBA always represents the country in FIBA tournaments and them trying to recover after the pandemic is the reason why they did not participate during the last run of TAB with the national team, and some of the players of that TAB team were those selected in the special draft
Even if the PBA players represented us from 2011 to 2020, the times when we needed PBA support was troubling. Support comes in quality players and quality practice time and prep time. It's not just how much the support came, it's how much we needed that support. Timing was also important.

2015 - June Mar, Japeth, and Jeff Chan were absent in the FIBA Asia Cup lineup. No SMC players but Pingris were in the lineup. At least we repeated our silver medal finish, and that roster was better constructed than the rosters from 2017 to 2019.
2017 Asia Cup - we only had two weeks to train for that tournament, thanks to the schedule.
2018 Asian Games - RoS and some other players represented us. I remember us considering pulling out of the competition if not for Yeng selecting many RoS players for chemistry, correct me if I'm wrong.
2019 World Cup - same as 2017. The team was also poor. Could have been better had the schedule been adjusted.
June-July 2022 window and 2022 FIBA Asia Cup - Erram was the lone PBA player, and the PBA season started during this period. I did say at the time the PBA players in the SEA games performed poorly, except for June Mar and Wright, and I was happy that those players won't represent us in the Asia Cup, but at least guys like Japeth would have been useful as rim protectors.

These are why I'm wary of our top Gilas players joining the PBA. When they're needed in international tournaments proper, little to no adjustments. SBP won't put its foot down either, because they're also PBA officials.

Agreed on this score. This should be the job of the NSA (in this case, SBP), but the problem is, they're self-interested basketball patrons. MVP, SBP, even UP boosters. I'm a UP alumnus (and current law student), but I get frustrated with the recruitment at times. Over-recruiting in some positions, leading to some players wasting away and leaving, and some fans would want to see promising Gilas players in UP rather than abroad.

It's fucked up here, honestly.

UP is just doing what DLSU and Ateneo are doing in overrecruiting. The only difference is UP is aggressive in denying it, like lol.

I see comments saying that we're not overrecruiting, but preparing for the future.

Would have been believable if we gave our players ample development time to go pro early and give space for other players.
