I wonder who would win, Tab's Gilas who fought Korea and won (Kouame, Kai, Dwight, Abarientos, Heading et al) or this version of Chot's Gilas (Brownlee, Standhardinger, Ross, Lassiter et al). My bet is that it will be Tab's Collegiate Gilas team.

Prime Kouame was pretty good. He can stop anybody and he can even switch in the perimeter. Al Dwairi was a bit too much for him but it wasnt lopsided as people remembered. He still scored and defended. Honestly, the Kouame Kai C rotation was pretty good. Kai was better coming off the bench playing his "5 minutes".

Or course if it was the Gilas against Korea team, I might pick that. That team almost defeated China in a scrimmage IRC. That might have defeated Serbia and possibly a closer score against DR. IRC Kai and Dwight were absent against DR and Dwight was absent against Serbia.

Whatever the outcome tomorrow, Chot should not be vindicated.

We played like a Asia Cup Pre-Qualifier team. Our offence revolves around JB32 and we have no options other than take pot shots from outside.

Even if we win, I still want this SBP board gone after the WC, no Panilio, Vargas, and SMC presence. Even Chot, though I have far less ill will towards him than the executives (more neutral, really), for the reason that he's not a coach you go with in a rebuild.

Hope Mighty, Chooks, or Delta take over. At least they could be a little bit more open-minded about sending youth and non-PBA players (I dunno with Delta, though). Chooks may have directed Kobe Paras to UP, but they also helped out with Kai's overseas training. Kung may self-interest, at least better than SMC and MVP.

Our basketball program can learn a thing or two from Coach Spoelstra.

He has that ability of maximizing every bit of talent out of his players. His teams always play together and hardnose defense. Great at identifying lowly valued players who turn out to be effective at something. Always has a solid game-plan and able to make in-game adjustments that win games.

He's slowly turning into a Popovich.

Wishing he imparts some of that knowledge to the Gilas program.

Those calling for us to lose against Cambodia just so Chot would be axed I think are gaming this wrong.
There's been numerous instances where he could have resigned after a failure but he hasn't, so that means he doesn't want to exit like that. He's too proud. The bosses also could've fired him after failures but they didn't because that would mean that they admit making a mistake choosing him. They're too proud.

These guys could care less about what people think and would even make it a point to grab on harder the more people call out for their removal.

It will take a phyrric victory before they let go.

The SEAG is proving to be decent to good early exposure for Gilas, hopefully they use the exposure to full benefit for both long term development and immediate task (World cup), that's the whole point of why people are unhappy with the decision making .

the concern is simple, does how the current SEAG games is being handled give you confidence that we will do well in the World cup ? duh, it's obviously a super red flag...

The reaction concern with our SEAG outing is really valid, it's simply a reflection of lack of confidence of fans that Gilas will do well 3 months from now in WC, I mean if MVP is dismaid, then why wouldn't the fans feel the same way. It's BS to say support lang tayo. Of course everyone will support our players , that's not in question. But it doesn't mean fans are not entitled to have grave questions and concerns on how the team is being handled.
People who say otherwise, have "group think mentality "as they misconstrue support of colleagues in industry or team, with rightfully calling out poor management practice.

Very much agree with you brother. Criticizing the SBP, Al Panlinlang or coach Chot Reyes does not equate to being unsupportive to the national team. The same way as criticizing the government doesn't translate to being an anti-government or being rebellious. I couldn't understand why a lot of people have that kind of mentality. One reason why there's a lot of toxicity in social media is because of this flawed mentality of lots of people out there who are in badly need of rationale & logic. Yung iba kasi natuto lang mag internet at mag facebook eh akala nila ang talino na nila & sila yung kadalasang maingay sa socmed.

Bad trades, bad signings, bad coaching hires, slow player development. This Gilas team feels like the Bulls from 2014 to 2020.

Now, as for this SEA Games, we win the gold, and we have success for the World Cup and qualify for the Olympics. OK, so what then? The team hasn't had a clear long-term direction since Feb. 2022. Feels like they're just out to make the PBA look good, and throw development to the wayside (as perfectly evidenced by this SEA Games). That's why I hope there's a management shakeup, and someone competent and not named MPIC or SMC takes over (ideally Chooks, Delta, and/or Mighty Group). That's why I was hoping for more youth in the SEA Games instead of too many older PBA guys like CStand, Marcio and Ross (as good as they have been, and Marcio playing his way into WC pool contention). Picking from Koon, Ballungay, Lucero, Quiambao, Harris, Gagate, Pablo, and maybe Konov, Bahay, and Anonuevo would have been nice.

Guys like CStand, Ross, Newsome, Lassiter, have already hit their ceilings & and in fact are already on a downhill. Guys like Bryan Ganuellas-Rosser & CJ Perez have already reached their peak.

I think a few vets are necessary, given the changing SEA landscape. Someone to steady the ship, around 2-4 guys.

But I think emphasis has to be given to youth, especially those who are 25 and below.

Here's my (way-too-early) 2025 SEA Games youngster pool (assuming the UAAP and NCAA gives way, considering that the Games are December 9-20, 2025):

Guards: Jared Bahay (20), Terrence Fortea (24), Harold Alarcon (23), Migs Oczon (25), Andy Gemao (19), SJ Moore (20), Kieffer Alas (18), Andrei Dungo (21), John Rey Pasaol (21), Reinhard Jumamoy (21)
Wings: Francis Lopez (22), Zav Lucero (25), Chris Koon (25), Chicco Briones (22), Caelum Harris (20), Jacob Bayla (20), James Nacua (21), Josh Coronel (21), Kai Ballungay (23)
Tweeners: Mason Amos (21), Luis Pablo (21), maybe Mark Belmonte (22), Alex Konov (20)

If that's the case, I hope he continues to mentor CTC and maybe someone younger. Let's take him up on his offer that he wants to help Philippine basketball.

I remember Coach Manong Pumaren being mentored by Bobby Knight. He attributes a lot of what he learned from those moments. There's a lot to learn from this world-class coaches. It's like technology transfer.

It was already posted. The only time we used a majority of cadet players in the SEA games was when we had an NP like Douthit that ensured we would still win the gold. Chot is a hypocrite when he says SEA games should be for development and at the same breath announcing he won't coach the SEA games again. Let's face it SEA games is a must win.

I think we could bring in some younger players but we prioritze good senior team guys that ensure we can win. First we have to have good bigs. We can bring in Rosser and Philips again. Then we need an NP. If it is Kouame then we can drop one of Rosser and Philips. Then we need to bring legit WC candidates in the SF and guard positions. After that we pick the collegiate players. Note that younger bigs will be less effective as they are the last ones to develop. Even Phillips has holes in his game not to mention Amos who became unplayable in must win games.

I think 5 amateurs would be a good combination of development and competitiveness.

People are forgetting how successful Ateneo was in the Jones Cup. What more if he had the best players of the UAAP like KQ?

We are being forced to choose between winning and developing talent because the coach SUCKS. CHOKE SUCKS.

CHOKE doesn't have what it takes to develop and lead a cadet team with NP to a Gold medal. Simple as that.

I think the ideal thing to do is have a national training pool of about 30 players & maintain that pool for a 4 to 5 year cycle. From that pool of players, we form a team that would play for FIBA & other international competitions like the Asia Cup, World Cup, SEA Games, Asian Games, Jones Cup & others. Let's get rid of those aging players like Junmar, Japeth, Erram, Almazan, Newsome, & instead include young promising players who are currently in their early 20's and even those who are 18 to 19 years old like a Mason Amos, Luis Pablo, Seven Gagate.

If we are to include FIBA ineligible players in the pool, dapat kunti lang (say 3 to 4 players) & it should be young players who have a good chance of getting FIBA exemption in 2 to 4 years time. I'm talking about the likes of Mike Philipps, Chris Koon & Kai Balungay. It really sickens me hearing the idea that in tournaments like SEA Games & Asia Games, where FIBA rules on player eligibility does not apply, we are going to send a team loaded with FIBA ineligible players who are already old like CStand, Pringle, Mike Williams Bryan Ganuelas-Rosser, Moala Tautuaa.

In this way, the players of the pool will be able to get so familiar with one another & get so familiar with the system thereby establishing good chemistry/cohesion. I think in a span of 3 years, maganda na ang chemistry ng team.

As anything that comes from Chot that 23 was all pogi points and no substance. There was no program to develop those guys. The guy who actually developed, Balti, was not even part of that.

If I remember correctly that includes RLs Bolick, Mocon and Carino. Bolick is currently blacklisted, they never gave Mocon a shot and Carino is stuck in the minor leagues

Nope. Not like the NCC (in the 80's) or the Gilas-1(2009-2011) programs. The NCC & Gilas-1 program involved players in the amateur level. The program I have in mind will involve mostly professional players from the PBA, B-league & perhaps KBL, with some current amateur players (perhaps 30% to 35% of the pool). Meaning this program will involve players who are already at the peak of their careers or would be at the peak of their careers during the tailend of the 4 or 5-year cycle. This would not involve players who are expected to be washed up by the tailend of the 4 to 5-year cycle.

That's why if I were the SBP, I will work on Brownlee, Jr.'s passport the moment Brownlee, Sr. became a naturalized Filipino citizen. The kid is only 12 I believe. It will be unwise for SBP to do nothing on the kid. If they work on this kid, atleast advice Brownlee, Sr. to work on Brownlee, Jr.'s passport.
