We still might need Japeth for a window or two, since we lack a rim protector outside him and Ange and Kai. We have Luis Pablo, Gab Demisana, and maybe Seven Gagate as other potential defensive bigs. If they develop well, then Japeth might be made expendable.

The rest of the vets you mentioned though, yes, they're now expendable. Better use their spots on young talent. Not really big contributors (except for Newsome, who was an asset in the August window), and they're getting older.

Only Demisana has the potential to be a Fiba level rim protector among those guys. We saw that in the U18. This is okay though, Kouame is still there. Once he finally gets surgery and finishes rehab he'll be back up to speed.

But AJ Edu is expected to be a regular fixture of Gilas during the post 2023 World Cup. Its time that we learn & get use to a life without the likes of Japeth, Junmar in the national team. The sooner we get used to it, the better for our Gilas team.

No hope for Luis Pablo?

Pablo's actually a pretty versatile defender. Quick enough to rotate to the perimeter and stay on perimeter players, and could protect the paint.

He's a good defender. Overall he was probably the best defender in the U18. Mobile for a home grown. But his motor and rebounding stood out the most for me. But he is no rim protector. Demisana was the best rim protector of that team. Unfortunately, he was less heralded and less developed than the other bigs of that team. Pablo was the surprise of that team, and eventually got the bulk of the PF minutes. But Gagate was overhyped I think. The guy was eaten up on defense and could not score under the basket agains the taller teams. Demisana had one good game where he made a blowout respectable by being a defensive force underneath. Demisana is the only decent rim protector of that batch. That's what makes him special defensively for Fiba.

Demisana needs to develop his body and toughness from what I’ve seen at least from u18, seems to shy away from contact, has long arms and can block shots near the rim. That was at least my impression of him defensively. Gagate has the body frame and athletic ability but he doesn’t try to impose himself in the paint.

Pablo really needs to fix his shooting. I dont see him like Mike Phillips who can play the five even internationally.

Speaking of Mike Phillips, do U think he can be the bigger version of Mark Pingris? I think Pingris is barely 6-foot-5 while Mike Phillips is at least 6-foot-7. We've seen the impact Pingris had made with Gilas being a utility guy who did the hustle & dirty work with flying colors. Imagine if Philips would be declared eligible by FIBA (fingers-crossed).

I guess Mr.Analyzed hint that China will hire naturalized guy from NBA will be true at all... With Kyle Anderson from Minnesota and Yao Ming/CBA is in final talks to get the former's services as NP will be finalize and expecting Anderson to play for China in FIBA WC this year... With that case, China again have the advantage vs Japan... Chinese locals are much better than Japanese locals ( CBA is way better than B-League).... And another NBA guy who will play in this summer's FIBA WC...

Mike is a 5 in the modern game. Might be short but has long arms and a great motor. No shooting too whatsover so no choice.

Well, Pingris never had an outisde either. In fact he rarely took or made even mid-range jumpers. Yet he was serviceable for Gilas playing mostly at the 4 spot.

That's becoz Ping wasn't there for scoring/offense. He was there mainly for his defense, rebounding, hustle & high energy. The same could apply to Mike Phillips.

Damn!! Wa happen to IBN….anyway, I would truly happy if the Philip brothers turn out to be the taller version of a Freddie Abuda with all those motors, hustles and intangibles. I think that consistent Piso piso that coach Freddie are known for when he was acquired by SMB but not part of his repertoire during his PABL and Purefoods days can be address upon during practices or workouts sessions. It’s just a matter of a designing a system/plays that would always put them in their sweet spots for possible offensive rebound and putbacks when the main offensive options are missing their shots. I agree that playing the 4 and occasionally the 3-spots would be a better fit in a world level but on an Asian level those brothers can matchup pretty well up to the 5 spot.

if we're talking about a much taller pingris we already have one who is 6'10" in aj edu, he's the closest to pingris among our young bigs

Calls AJ the most versatile interior defender Gilas has.

What would really piss me off is seeing ageing players like Junmar, Japeth, Poy Erram, Pogoy, Matt Wright, Chris Newsome in the Gilas pool for the post 2023 FIBA World Cup era. Its about time to retire those ageing players from national team service becoz those players are on the downhill route. Palaos na talaga yung mga yan. Its time we make the much younger players like Mason Amos, AJ Edu, Schonny Winston, Carl Tamayo, Rhenz Abando, & others be regular fixtures of the Gilas pool for the qualifying windows & tournament proper of FIBA tourneys like the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup & 2027 FIBA World Cup. The more we get rid of those ageing players for the Gilas pool, the better for Philippine basketball.

I think there are a number of players in the amateur backyard that should be considered in the Gilas pool if we are thinking about long term program. Guys like Seven Gagate, Luis Pablo, Chico Briones, Caleum Harris, Alex Konov, Abadam, Bayla, etc. I think it would be ideal that we elevate these players in the Gilas "cadet" pool anytime soon.

BTW, its nice that IBN is back to regular programing.

The only veterans I feel we need in the post-2023 WC are Scottie (PBA), Parks (B.League), and maybe Perez and Bolick (PBA). The rest should be 28 and under, in the pool below:

PBA: Malonzo, Navarro (free agent), maybe Mamuyac, maybe Oftana
B.League: Dwight, Kai, Carl, Thirdy
KBL: Abarrientos, Abando
College: Mason, Lastimosa, Valdez, Oczon, AJ Edu, Panopio, Lopez, Quiambao
Others: Winston, Pablo, Gagate, Demisana, Bayla, Bahay, Gemao, Kouame (NP), Konov, Harris, Nacua

Yeah, Ateneo has done that for quite some time. Honestly the style fits Filipinos more than the traditional PG to C lineups. Instead of having a bigman at 4, they usually have either a tweener in Verano, or a wing like Navarro, Koon, or maybe Ballungay in that spot. Though, they can have a guy like Daves (who also has mobility) manning the 4 too to guard bigger players.

Positionless basketball, really. That's what Tab tried to build in Gilas.

To paraphrase Tab. You don't really need a lot of really tall players. You need versatile guys on defense and offense of decent height compared to competition. But you don't really need a lot of centers. I think this is similar to many of the NZ teams. Not sure if this is because they share the same principles.

Hopefully, the post-2023 WC Gilas lineups focus on positionless basketball. Players like Dwight, Navarro, Malonzo, Balti, Scottie, and even Carl and AJ (maybe Mason) should be crucial pieces moving forward. Versatile players who can play multiple roles on offense and/or guard multiple positions on defense.

I really like seeing chots lineup with pogoy sized forwards getting shitted on by proper small ball teams like ginebra rn

Tab's comment about Ateneo direction and modern game is consistent witb the NBL, where frontline are fast and Guards are big with pace.

“I think our frontline will get a little bit smaller, our guard lineup might get a little bit bigger, and the speed of the game might be a little bit faster. This is how we project going forward, which as I said, kind of shadows how the whole game of basketball is going these days,” he said.
