Urghh reading about Oftana makes me reminisce about Kobe Paras when he was still a teenager. Remember the hype with those HS basketball mixtapes and when he committed to going to UCLA?!?. Oftana is what Paras should have been. IMO

How possible is it that we maintain the core of Gilas, say a nucleus of 9 or 10 players, that would consistently play in the qualifying windows & tournament proper in a 4-year cycle so that we that team would be able to established more than enough cohesion or chemistry? This early I'm already thinking of the 2027 FIBA World Cup & the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup.

I think Gilas would be significant stronger & more consistent if we keep the line-up intact for a cycle of say 4 to 5 yrs. Hindi yung paiba-iba tayo ng line-up for every tournament or window qualifier.

I say we maintain a nucleus of Kai, AJ Edu, Tamayo, Balti, Malonzo, Dwight, Oftana, Heading, Schonny Winston, Iskati, Parks, and a naturalized player for a 4 year cycle.

Yun ang lamang ng ibang teams like Jordan, Iran, Korea, China over us. These teams are able to maintain their respective national teams' core for a considarable period, say at least 5 years, hence they have the edge over us in terms of cohesion over us.

That's a great idea but availability will always be the question. Those players you've mentioned will set us up to be contenders within the next 4-5 year cycle (except Schonny who's not yet proven, Balti who hasn't shown anything commendable in the pros and Heading who will be too much of an undersized 2 in the near future).

JC and Kai will be our 1-2 punch for World-level competitions, them together puts us in an entirely different dimension. Imagine how much more these 2 will improve over that 4 year span. It's also convenient that we have players like Edu, Dwight, Malonzo, Parks, CJ Perez and Iskati, these players give us assurance that we can match up with powerhouses. But for FIBA Asia Cup, SEA Games, Asian Games and Qualifying Windows, we kinda have to settle for who's available, and I believe that's where SBP tests out different players to see if they can fit into the scheme of things (example: although talent is not a question, Roosevelt Adams and Thirdy Ravena were proven not viable options for FIBA competitions)

Thing is we've beaten all these teams already, we've always had the edge over them talent-wise and height-wise now we are not in a disadvantage, it's only a matter of putting the right pieces together at the right time. For example in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship, we were a Junemar Fajardo and Japeth Aguilar away from a 2016 Olympic berth. Instead we had an undersized RDO & Sonny Thoss guard Zhou Qi and Yi Jianlian.

Asian Games 2018 where we placed 5th, we only needed 1 more big (we had Erram, Almazan, Asi and CStan *facepalm*) and a tall wing with reliable shooting and we could've won gold.

But oh well, I hope SBP, MVP & SMC already learned from these mistakes.

Haha. Being 6'4 would really make him standout standing next to other players. He looked slightly taller than the other guards

If Schonny cracks the window lineup and displays stellar play, it would be a tough decision come WC time if it's CJ Perez or him. But at this point I'd pick CJ Perez because of poise, maturity and experience, have Schonny mentored by him. Schonny still has to prove he can produce at the pro-level.

Also if Sedrick Barefield is eligible all of the sudden and Juan GDL miraculously revives his career in Europe, they surely deserve consideration.

Jerom Lastimosa is a no go, too thin and too small for international ball.

But for now, it's safe to say the point guard position belongs to CJ Perez and Scottie Thompson. The rest should wait for their turn.

Key takeaways:
- SBP believes we can beat Lebanon without JC
- Justin Brownlee already training with the team since Window 5 so familiarity not a problem
- Lebanon will field in a new naturalized player in Window 6
- Jordan still not qualified so prepare for a long night against this team
- Iran not qualified yet as well (last best Asian team in WC2019)
- Window 6 will be used to see how some players will blend with the core
- AJ Edu included in WC Pool
- Sedrick Barefield eligibility still in question
- Justin Brownlee shoo-in for SEA Games in May
- Gilas will be training both in US and Europe (same regimen as 2014)
- Pool will be trimmed down to 15 players around June
- US training will be somewhere convenient to JC (most likely LA or Utah)
- Gilas looking to have tune-up games with teams such as Spain and USA
- Pocket tournament prior to WC will be held in Manila for teams that will prepare in the country early
- We will run the same unorthodox system but this time it's hybrid ("systematic" bara-bara, Philippine style of play)
- Chot prefers to draw African and South American teams in our World Cup group based on previous results
- Chot optimistic we can get into second round
- Best Asian team qualifies for 2024 Paris Olympics (Japan (Rui & Yuta) and Lebanon (Arakji) should be the main concerns of Gilas)
- Asian Games will be late October (No JC for sure)
- Asian Games and SEA Games eligibility rules change, so expect to see FIBA-'ineligible' players don Philippine colors

Agree with U about the availability issue. But if U look at the players I've mentioned, only Iskati, Malonzo & Oftana are currently playing in the PBA (whose availability would be a issue). We can replace those players from time to time with players like Bolick (most likely he'll play in Taiwan), Will Navarro & Abando.

I see Rhenz Abando and Will Navarro as Gilas mainstays in the near future. Hopefully Will recovers and bounces back from the ACL injury soon. For now let's have them develop their game in the pros. Availability wise, I think the only problem is Kai and JC. PBA, BLeague, and KBL are definitely more lax with clearance than NBL and NBA.

I hope Bolick doesn't get blacklisted. You know how petty some people could be..

Kinda frustrating that Will Navarro got hit by an ACL injury just when his offensive game is starting to improve.

Cone - "Mason is a 6'8" Caidic, and has a legit shot of making final 12 "

Interview with Noli Eala

Oh wow! It speaks a lot for a player being described by a coach like Tim Cone to be a 6-foot-8 Allan Caidic. Cone must be so impressed with Mason Amos' outside shooting for him to say that. Imagine if Mason would polish his inside offense & defense, his potential would be almost unlimited. I see Mason Amos as becoming a quality stretch-4 in Asian basketball in a few years. I see him as reaching the level of an Ali Haidar of Lebanon.

I think there's some semblance in Mason's game and that of Carl Tamayo. Though I think Mason is more athletic & is a better offensive player than Tamayo.

My WC squad : Clarkson, Parks, Erram, Thompson, Sotto, Malonzo, Pogoy, Perez, Ramos, Aguilar, Tamayo, Edu

For Asian Games (5X5) : Brownlee, Oftana, Abando, Baltazar, Quiambao, Fajardo, Almazan, S. Ildefonso, Bolick, Navarro, M.Amos, Winston

Asian Games (3x3) : Brickman, Monzon, Hermoso, Mikey Williams

In todays era, i dont think so. Caidic will not guard any body as he is not athletic. He will be like Ritualo, great shooter but nothing else.

guys like duncan robinson & joe harris have carved out decent careers in the nba, a 6'8" caidic is easily better than those 2

I think Alba once posted Mason's FiBA youth shooting FT, FG % and 3 pt % and was something like 90/50/40 which is really unprecedented for a youth. If u look at UAAP shooting % they're actureally really bad

IMHO, mason is not athletic but a mobile player. His mobility combined with good skill set is the best blue print for 6-6 and up homegrown players.

Ritualo is barely 6 foot though which kinda limited his effectiveness and can't really do anything else effectively except shoot.
