That's what I meant. Upon the end of Navarro's contract with Northport, he is expected to sign a contract with a KBL team. And even if no KBL team would be interested on Navarro, I'm pretty sure some B-league teams would be interested on him especially with the way Navarro's has played so far with Northport. And we are talking here of a player who is around 24 or 25, which means he's bound to improve more.

I know that a lot of posters here don't like the idea of Gilas having "bansot" point guard/s but I think with the way RJ Abarrientos has been playing in the KBL, then maybe RJ is worth a consideration. I mean, we could maintain a good pool of PG's in Gilas for the post 2023 FIBA World Cup era with Iskati Thompson, Bolick, Schonny Winston, Dalph Panopio, RJ Abarrientos & maybe even an Aaron Black. Having a good No. of PG's in the national pool is very logical since player availability will always be an issue with PBA Gilas players. Let's face it, in as much as we would always want Iskati & Bolick in Gilas uniform, most of the time they are not available.
While RJ Abarrientos is "bansot", I think he's too good a point guard to pass on. He's playing very impressively in the KBL in his rookie year there, & he's what, 23 yrs old? He's bound for more improvement. Imagine how good he will become 3 to 4 years from now if he continues to play in the KBL & gets the reps playing the FIBA game.
I think hindi na masama if RJ is paired with a good size PG in Gilas. Say an Iskati-Abarrientos or a Bolick-Abarrientos or a Winston-Abarrientos point guard rotation would be good enough in Asian level competition.

Surprisingly at world level, it's not actually the bigs we're we are most mismatched, but at the guards and wing positions (I'm serious) , these are the positions where we will get burned..

Yeah, we're really a step slow when developing wings. For the most part, they're 6'1"-6'3", and lack the length to contest opposing wings. If players are 6'5"-6'6", they are trained as hustle fours instead of wings, if they have the mobility.
Well, at least we have Oftana, Navarro, and Dwight as starting points. I hope Caelum, Francis Lopez, Jared Abadam, LA Andres, and Alex Konov can emerge as good 6'5"+ wing prospects who can defend.

Ay, that's where we absolutely need work. Most we can produce are tweeners like Tamayo, Baltazar, and Quiambao. Might need 6'6"-6'7" players who can approximate the skillsets of the players you mentioned, and the length to defend.
Maybe 6'7" Alex Konov can fill that spot. Shooter with a good motor.
And, you're really advocating for a small ball lineup, no? Not saying that I disagree (I don't), but I just noticed.

Not necessarily small ball) , but whatever best talent you can put on the floor (regardless of position), put the most talented player who can reasonably play PF , talented both on offense (stretches floor ) can defend the perimeter but still rebound well. Maybe this guy if can put things together

For me personally, I really love to see a healthy Gabe Norwood(6'5) played his last tour of duty this coming WC 2023, imagine occupying the 1 and 2 spot alongside Winston(6'3), WillNav(6'6),Jaime(6'7) and BRP(6'4) and partnering them with JC(6'4) that would be awesome.

Jmie malonzo was the missing piece for this team but suddenly Kai came along Jordan came along, other good team pieces like scottie parks and japhet playing a tall 4 along side kai.. so malonzo stint with nt was overshadowed.. nothing to worry about as the one who handle Gilas now (Apa) is his club coach also..
Scottie + Dwight + Ange as local + aj edu + Kai + JC as local + Malonzo + Justin Brownlee.... major headache for any team including the USA.

Just because you're a good player doesn't mean you're a good fit. We always had a surplus of great players but we need to classify them accordingly in terms of what level they can play at. For example, great 6'4 center, okay maybe you can be a star in the MPBL but that doesn't mean you can play that way in the PBA as well. Talent is talent, man. In the case of RJ, he can be protected by the likes of Dwight, Navarro, Malonzo, etc. However, a 6'4" center is different. Harder to protect bigs, e.
And really, small ball refers more to the 4 and 5 positions in my book, and more to their respective skillset. If an undersized wing plays 3, and two undersized bigs who play like bigs are the 4 and 5, that's not small ball. If your 4 is 6'6" but is a wing, and/or your 5 is a 6'6"-6'8" natural PF, that's small ball (especially in terms of the 4 being a wing).

Guys, I'd like to throw this hypothetical question just to have some good discussion here:
If for instance we have a prime Johnny Abarrientos playing in the PBA right now, would you not consider him for Gilas mainly becoz he's only 5-foot-7 and we have good size point guards now like iskati, Bolick, Kiefer Ravena & even CJ Perez? I'm talking here of Asian level basketball, not world level.
I liked Johnny A so much. He was so skilled, quick & athletic as well, & he was exciting. Though he was a scoring PG, his passing skills & court savvy were really exceptional. Of course the downside would always be his size (or lack of it).

I think he was more of a mid shooter. I think he was the quickest guard then that he didnt need a 3. Also he played for TC. Didnt shoot a lot of 3s IRC.

He is a good midrange shooter, thats why when the need to shoot threes came along he easily adjusted..the underrated thing about Johnny is he is a "smart" scorer in his prime..it was when kenneth came along when Johnny offensive game deferred..

Crap. Will's a long 6'6" wing defender (which we have in VERY short supply), probably our best, and his improving offensive game could have been more helpful to the national team. Cone would appreciate a ballhandler from the wing position.
Now how do we replace him?
