Go to level requirements

Put it this way, for one to be an effective FIBA world go to scorer , one has to be averaging around 17 pts a game for a mid major Div 1 US college , or it's equivalent in major foreign league.
Simply we do not have that player.. maybe Remy?

I'll take Kobe over Navarro on this one, they need more offense at any given point and Kobe will be highly motivated to show his improvement and he's not bad on defense,if anything his blocks looks disrespecting enough to disuade a player to drive within his area of defense. This time also he gets to play at 3 and possible even 2 is some plays if Tab wants to go really big.

Navarro already has a definite role in Gila's & that is being the team's best wing defender ala Gabe Norwood. And such role is so vital for the team.

Would Kobe be willing to accept such a role? I doubt that. Let's face it, Kobe has a star complex. I don't think he would be content playing as a mere role player or a utility guy with limited opportunity to score. Kumbaga sa opisina, pang managerial position and gustong trabaho ni Kobe. I don't think he would be willing to do utility work.

Besides, Kobe hasn't yet proven if he can play good defense in the perimeter - something Navaro has already exhibited so far.

Is he even a good defender? Is he really an upgrade over our current wing prospects? TBH I'm happy with Tamayo, Balti, Navarro.

Coach Chot's still stands on his small ball concept. 14:40 -16:04 "I think they have to learn how to play small ball - Chot Reyes"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2kmRGi5mOs

well I'm praying that this guy may not be able to dip his hand again on our Gilas program. Honestly speaking I am not mad if we parade this small ball concept if our opponents are the likes of Japan, Korea, Chinese Taipeh, our SEA neighbors wherein our 5"9 to 5"11 dudes can somehow match-up on their counterpart but with the likes of China, Iran, Australia, New Zealand, Lebanon, Jordan, Euro and American teams now wait a minute!! we had a situation here because surely they will maul our backcourt midgets all game long. I think we already discuss this issue even in other thread that a 6'1 to 6'5 range as our main playmaker is an ideal height if we want to be competitive outside Asia.

Fpr me, there are 2 categories of Small Ball

1. "Midget Ball" - Literally just based it in height and speed. Lol.

2. "Skilled Ball" - GSW dynasty are considered small ball with a 7 footer Wing, and a 6'6-6'7 Center. Because their concept for them of " small ball" is"skilled ball" not " small height ball"

Sabihin nating scoring wise, Kobe is significantly better than Navarro, but under the Gilas team concept, we need Navarro's defense more than we would need Kobe's scoring. As I've said, I really doubt it that Kobe would be content taking the role of a pure role player with limited scoring opportunities. Kobe was born with a scorer's mentality eh at mahirap yun tanggalin sa katawan nya, ika nga. Navarro on the other hand has played as a role player under coach Tab with Ateneo for several years already & he had embraced that role very well.

Well then, maybe it's by design the Tab does not have a go to scorer, especially while still introducing and building the system and culture. If Tab had a ball dominant scorer as early as now , the others will not be developed and we move away from a system.
As Tab said he has NO issues with a Clarkson level player with his IQ and talent level coming in late in 2023

But if we're talking about JC Perez or Romeo level , no way will that work in world level, in the context of that level those guys are simply not good enough to rely on as go to scorers , that won't work. That is the context of my statement , we cannot rely on talent to win. (We simply do not have that talent level to rely on it , but have to rely on chemistry to win at worlds)

Still, we need a failsafe later on when the offense breaks down. We'll need to teach the go-to scorer how to operate without the ball (although that will take some work).

Yeah, the scorer is a LAST RESORT.

With our lineup, I don't think we'll be going small for a long time. Tab's lineups always have a natural 4 and 5, based on what we saw in the FIBA Asia qualifiers and OQT.

Well yeah.

It doesnt make sense to play small ball if 2 or 3 of your best players are big.

Kai, Kouame, and Maybe Balti/Tamayo.

Dwight is the only Wing/Guard who is in the top 5 of the roster in terms of talent

While I agree, we don't need that player early when building the program.
Who knows maybe Mikey Williams is that player and is inserted in the windows in 2022

Actually by 2023 not now, (don't laugh), I expect Kai to be that go to scorer, I'm serious

@ IPC & D'Admiral

Being a go-to-guy doesn't really translate to being a "ball heavy" player (something coach Tab dislikes). Take the case of Matthew Wright at Phoenix. Wright is Phoenix' go-to-guy player but he isn't a "ball heavy" player. In fact Wright facilitates well for Phoenix & doesn't always look to score. I think Wright isn't in the same mold as a Mark Caguioa or Garry David or a James Yap.

If only we can find a go-to-guy with the same mentality as a Matt Wright then that would be good to the team.

I get that,
I think we can slowly evolve and find who that player is by 2023

And in my mind it could be Kai by 2023

I'm thinking of a wingman being our go to guy. Yung tipong halimbawa under shotclock pressure yung Gilas, ibigay na sa kanya yung bola & just let him create his own shot off the dribble.

And to me , a go to guy doesn't necessarily have to be a perimeter position player , but can play in the high post (e.g .Jokic or Dirk), , play broken, throw it to kai at high post , he then creates out of the free throw line extended

swing offense already has a post-up option installed. it's just a matter of throwing the ball to kai (there were instances of this in ACQ and OQT), but they didn't go to it much. maybe because Kai is not the vocal leader yet? he is a late inclusion to the team after all. but by 2023 and after reaching the NBA, i agree, Kai will be the go-to-guy whether team chemistry wise or coach orders.

Yeah, a go-to guy can be a big. I totally agree. I'm actually in favor of post-play as a failsafe.

Like I said, we'll need to involve our bigs more in our offense. Hopefully by the FIBA Asia Cup, we can now properly feed our bigs. Our bigs are our key to the success of Gilas.

OK noted. Maybe I'm just being into old school basketball:cool:

I happened to see this in Facebook:

Not a good choice for a headline.

Guys, do you think former San Beda & now La Salle point guard Evan Nelle would be a better fit point guard for Gilas than SJ Belangel? While Belangel is the better scorer, I think Nelle is more of a pass-first point guard which might be what we need in Gilas.

The downside I see in Nelle is that he's too lanky that he might not withstand the physicality of the FIBA game. And of course, he's with the greens eh.
