Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

I understand delaying Oliver if someone better from the current PBA class of imports wants in (Rakocevic?) but definitely no reason to delay Brownlee.

Serbians will get mad at us if ever Rakocevic play for us. Haha

If only the players you mentioned were an inch or two taller, we would have solve that agile PF problem with Malonzo and Balti.

how's raven cortez doing these days? he was probably the best defensive prospect in his generation. legit 6'7" at 16 yrs old, very mobile and can guard wings/guards, good shotblocker, good BBIQ in general. he had very limited offense & dribbling though but he can cut and score on offensive rebounds. i haven't heard anything about him since he got injured pre pandemic

Here's an observation of Cortez against Ateneo.

Ok it's time for me to issue my apology to Raven Cortez. I really thought he just tall. He can actually run the floor, and finish. Already better than bright LOL.

Raven suffers from the same problem as Mike Phillips in that both are currently best at the 5 spot and are undersized internationally. Raven I'd guess is an easier transition to a forward spot but aint there yet.

Raven looks like he has a good stroke from the foul line, so he can improve his shooting. However, he'll have to improve his lateral quickness so he can play the 4 for the senior team. Have him switch onto perimeter players at times.

A little trivia from Nick, he was the first American born Serbian to play for any of their National teams

https://www.philstar.com/sports/2022/10/10/2215616/magnolias-gamble-serbian-american-import-rakocevic-pays-off

Q: I heard that you played for the Under-20 Serbian national squad. How was it playing with them?

It was amazing. I love the experience, I love playing with my teammates, me and my teammates are very close. We stay in touch even to this day. Hopefully one day, I could play with the national team. And as soon as I have some time, maybe this summer or next summer, I can go back over there. But it was an incredible experience, I was the first ever American born player to play for the national team, so that was a different type of accomplishment. That was special to me and obviously my parents. The experience was incredible, I feel it made me better as a player, I can't wait to go back out there once I have some time, I?d love to compete with them again.

Oh, it means that he can no longer play for any other national team except Serbia.

Diba yung papers ni Brownlee nakay Cong. Romero since 2018... What happened to that?

2018, that's the 17th Congress, had to refile it for the 18th (2019-2022) and the 19th Congress (2022-2025) again, back to 1st reading/refile for 1st reading for the 19th Congress since it was not even tabled/tackled at the Committee level (generally all bills that dont get signed by Congress before it ceases will be archived and refiled the next congress). It takes a lot of political capital and maneuvering to get a bill discussed/heard even at the 1st reading, especially for bills like this (seemingly inconsequential for the general public)

Charlie Villanueva played for US U-20 for transferring to DR. He can still transfer but it would require Serbia to let him go.

That's what I am trying to convey - this rests at the mercy of Serbia. Legally speaking, yes, he can be released by Serbia. The question is: will the Serbia let him go? Nobody knows, except Serbia.

Here's an observation of Cortez against Ateneo.

raven can do have a decent pro career, but working hard might do him a troy rosario story (yeah not as athletic but being effective player for the etam in the long run) theres no late bloomer big mobile 4 guy yet in the pba as sharma and belga are traditional center..

Actually there's a chance... With Serbia have tons of talent in their program, He can easily release by Serbia... Same case also for Christian Standhardinger from German U-18 (or U-20) to Gilas in 2017....

You can't be sure with that. There are qualifying windows to play. They may test the untested.

What Cong. Romero did? Anak ng teteng... Paparepresenta then walang gagawin.... Hay naku!!!!

my office/agency handled/commented on a lot of bills authored by Romero, majority of the bills he filled are just crap/filler, must be the reason why his colleagues don't take him seriously.

Nice to have a good No. of 6-foot-5/6-foot-6 combo forwards in Philippine basketball right now - Malonzo, Oftana, Will Navarro, Kobe Paras, Roosevelt Adams, Arvin Tolentino, Javi Gomez-Deliano.

I remember in the 90's parang si Jun Limpot lang yata yung 6-foot-5/6-6 natural power forward in the PBA. Then in the 2000's, only Danny Seigle was the 6-5/6-6 natural small forward in the PBA.
Things have changed since then & its a good change.

I have a question. The Goldwin-coached UP squad that won the UAAP championship last May, can our old guard coaches beat Tab's Ateneo with the same UP squad?

I doubt that very very very very much!! I wouldn't bet my rent money against coach Tab's Ateneo team with UP being mentored by either a Choke Reyes, or Leo Austria, or Tim Cone.

I looked back at this question, and judging from the masterclass Cone had against the Dragons last Sunday, especially on defense, maybe he has a chance to beat Ateneo with that UP team. He'd want to develop Zav and Anton Eusebio as wings too.

Dunno with Chot or Austria. We'll see in the following Sundays.

At least Cone showed that he can coach a good defensive game against international-style teams like the Dragons, and that might make him a good addition to the NT staff as a defensive coordinator.

This is the effect of FSAs (except for those from the US of course). Elite guys were forced to adapt to international position-size. More prospects currently in the UAAP coming.

Biologically, were also producing taller people.

i think today's generation is 3-5 inches taller from our generation, thank you star margarine and better nutrition/good

True. It?s not uncommon to see 6?0 High Schoolers in MM nowadays.

Don?t be surprised if the SBP will tap Brownlee or Clarkson for the SEA games. Lolz

To save the team's ass when the lineup, defense, offense, or all of the above are poor? Hahahahaha.

But if it's chemistry-building for the WC, why not? I'd personally prefer an NP that can help out more on defense, though.

Here's an analysis of Carl in Ryan Alba's UP-NU thread: https://twitter.com/_alba__/status/1580870571511803904?t=-ZL_RTzuG1IjX5V8iVB7EA&s=19

Ryan noted Carl's improvement on defense, particularly on the perimeter, and his newfound isolation scoring and passing. He's also the ballhandler in some PnR situations.

I hope Carl's newfound versatility on both ends translates to FIBA, especially defensively. At least competently switch to wings or some guards and contain them.

If not, his versatility on offense can be good, but he'll be nothing more than an instant offense option for the NT, and that's OK.
