Reviewing the numbers of the past two World Cups, and I found that we actually performed pretty decently on defense in 2014, with a defensive rating of 106.8. Further more, we allowed a 44.3% FG (31.7% 3PT), and forced 14 turnovers a game.

2019 on the other hand was a goddamn disaster. A defensive rating of 128.6, while allowing an FG of 53.7% (45.2% from 3). Furthermore, we forced only 12.2 turnovers a game.

Man, how our defense fell through those years.

Yengs physical D is probably not Fiba legal. Barroca was supposed to be the point of attack defender but his PBA defense was called a foul everytime. No Ping. Not sure if Norwood was there. But Blatche was also a step slower defensively.

No Ping, but Gabe was there.

Man, we need replacements for them as defensive anchors.

I also noticed that we have a number of teams that employ defensive schemes that can translate to the international level. Ateneo, UP, La Salle, Magnolia, MERALCO, RoS. I'm talking about scheme, not the other stuff.

That makes our NT's defensive ineptitude without Tab all the more frustrating. We have teams that have good defensive schemes, so how come we can't translate that to the NT?

IMO: Lack of prep time and familiarity. Its easier to coach offensive sets because pinoy ballers' innate skills and instincts on that end, and maybe individual man to man defensive skills like blocking, taking charge or that pinoy trait of simpleng siko. Team defense is whole lot different animal. its like the team should in in sync like the back-4 in soccer, where the squad move as a unit.

Well Barok was brought in as a defensive specialist but wasn't really effective and was limited offensively like Gabe. If you can't defend and help the offence what's your value then? But the whole team sucked as a whole that's it's hard to find a scrape goat

its a common thing for a Tim Cone team usually first 2 games they don't play good, though that give an open 3 than a 2 defense is always the chink in ginebra's armor especially if the other team is waxing hot from the three, like in the fourth quarter there were several times Nieto was open because Mariano was like 2 steps away from his as he's trying to cover the shaded lane despite rain or shine shooting 41% from the 3

That give up an open three than easy 2 defense was a big concern for me when Cone was appointed as an assistant for the NT. His Gilas allowed Indonesia to shoot 16-40 (40%) while Thailand shot 11-32 (34%) from 3. At least as the team's defensive coordinator, the team's interior defense improved, although Kai, Japeth, and Malonzo were big there. Just need to see some better rotations in the perimeter, and we'll be good.

So having a solid long-term core is important in building the team. and that core should be drilled on a good team defense system, that helps them rotate to the paint and to the three-point line. Long prep times before tournaments proper help too.

plus the FIBA WC was just a year after the Phil Arena Brawl, FIBA refs were on to us and were quick to blow the whistle to avoid another incident. Our players need to learn not to use their siko and braso in playing physical d.

I think playing defense with our feet should be taught to players, starting from when they're kids. Helps with mobility, and the players will be more pushed to stay in front.

That said, playing defense with the feet lessens fouls, and we need to learn to just use our chests and movement when being physical. We pride ourselves for being physical, we just need to play physical the right way and harness it on defense, while tailoring players for the international game.

I remember Paul Lee hip-checking Jovic of Serbia that resulted in an automatic un-sportsmanlike foul call. I think that aside from giving too many easy baskets in that game, Paul Lee's overt display of physicality bordering the dirty, was what prompted the Sebian coach to comment about Gilas' lack of quality.

I think this would be more realized if the PBA (still the country's most popular league) takes the lead by adjusting its rules on man-to-man D/physicality according to what's allowed in the international game.

I think the Aussie/NZ game should be studied. They're physical, but their physicality is legal in FIBA. Maybe we could emulate them in the physicality limit.

Since we're talking about physicality and CYG, his inspirational message to Gilas players bests sums up our NT program

“Sa PBA ang gagaling niyo, dito sa international ang tatanga niyo,”-to CJ Perez
“Pag balik niyo sa PBA, ang gagaling niyo. Pang-PBA lang kayo.”- to Pogoy
Hoy! Dribble ka ng dribble, wala ka namang skills. Di ka naman magaling. Tang*** mo, ipasa mo ang bola,” - to Barocca ( this also best explains why DDO is no longer working for Gilas

This, PBA stars are not used to this type of physicality, case of point the Gilas-Boomers brawl. PBA should probably invite Aussie and NZ teams as guest teams next yr. Though I expect Goorijan's Bay Area Dragons to emulate Aussie physicality.

As if galing ni Coach Yeng sa international. Mema!

to be fair, at least he had the decency to take responsibility regarding Gilas' pathetic performance and resign, eh yung isa jan, lols. But true, he lacked self awareness while he berate his team during WC 19

Well he's not wrong though. As much as he sucked in FIBA he's speaking facts here. Though the same can be said to him. Pang PBA lang

Selecting PBA players that are flops internationally (pang-PBA lang) more than higher-upside and better-fitting players, not knowing when to pass, ayun. And then, coaching styles din.
