Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Again we are not expecting to much for our young team, this is for 2023 preparation. It is already a bonus and blessings if we win. Of course we want to win tournaments but let us still focus on development for 2023 because i really feel we have a change for podium finish or at least semi finals. Our goal is to reach podium or at least quarterfinals in WC2023, and be number one and champion in Asia, and top 10 in the world. It is a good start.

On for our roster, for me starting in this Fiba Asia cup we must add tall and athletic guards to support Dwight namely; Paras, JGDL, Thirdy, Panopio and hopefully Clarkson to be cleared as local. As for bigs lets add Edu and hope and pray that he is healthy.

I still don't agree including PBA players since they are already old by 2023. But if we want to add PBA players, it may sound strange, but I still like Norwood. For defenders, age is not that necessary , what is needed is smarts and experience. Just look at Bruce Bowen of Spurs and Shane Battier of Miami, they are old but effective defenders.

Maybe instead of actually adding PBA players to the core team, maybe the SBP should invite/hire former NT players like Alapag, RDO, Pingris, Hontiveros, Norwood (upon retirement) to be part of the Youth Development program so they can impart their experiences in international competitions to young players

I said serious, maybe the Australia, heir best of 3 games.

The rest are friendlies which means experimentation not serious.

WC 2019

Out of contention win from eliminated teams which means not that serious,

Montenegro is not top 20 or last seed Euro.

WC 2010

France without their top 5 players

Young Canada team who were last placer. Those teams didn't advance to the quarterfinals.

There is only 1 win of the 6 that is a friendly.
All our official FIBA and world cup in fact, so you're saying if a team like Serbia does not send their best like.Jokic in a World cup it is not counted. Ok.
So if those top 15 teams in the world at world cup are depleted, then isn't it then more embarrassing that Asian teams get blown out and are winless against them.

Why are u talking about NZ and results anyway. The tiers of level players is common accepted knowledge, nothing to debate. DR a top 19 team like 20 other teams in the world simply have more players of that level, nothing to argue.

Norwood and Hontiveroz will be a great mentor to them.

Hopefully, Tab can use his connection to get overseas job security for Baltazar and Tamayo (and some of the others too) so that they can continue to develop their game abroad, even with a threat of a ban from the PBA.

for now for sure tab wont do that as these two are still connected to their schools. maybe after they used up their eligibility or if they decide it themselves.

Yeah... magrereklamo UP and DLSU nian.. We should let them decide themselves where they will go or will stay at UAAP.. At this stage they know already that they are now beyong UAAP talent already...

Of course, I meant, when they decide to finish their college eligibility. I hope they go overseas first chance they get, and if they do, hopefully they get long-term deals which offer job security even with a ban threat.

Why the hell did the PBA institute that rule? Honestly, that's really shortsighted. They can get more stars na talagang pang-Pilipinas lang.

As I've said, this shitty anti-dodging rule by the PBA is an anti-national team rule & a pro SMC rule.

Bro, that is the fault of the whole PBA board. Though SMC and MVP has more under their umbrella. Each pba team has a vote on that ruling. Kaya stop just focusing on SMC alone. I hate chua but i dont think RSA wont support gilas. MVP were also dirty with their dealings. Pwde din nga palit management naman para madaming available na players from SMC then will check if MVP group would also be supportive if SBP would be under SMC.

The sad reality is by 2023, 2024 onwards SBP will be losing most of the current members of GILAS to the PBA just like in the past. It will once again beg the PBA and other collegiate leagues for quality players. The cycle continues, the SBP develops the NT, then the PBA and its teams devours the players of our NT.

The real culprit is SBP lacks the power to impose its will on the PBA. PBA, still has the financial and political muscle, SBP is too dependent and connected with the PBA. It needs to assert its mandate.

I think it would be best if we rotate the handling of SBP. Give each 5yrs. That way they would try to out perform each other and somehow there is no monopoly. What is happening is that there is a power struggle between MVP group, SMC and the rest of the pba teams.

It would be best if we change management after 2023 if we falter. SMC is equally capable and equip to run it. That would also show MVP's group true color if they were really for the country or not.

mvp has retired fom pldt and will soon retire from first asia pacific. as he gets older, his interest in international basketball will wane.

maybe after 2023, maybe after 2027.

but once his influence in first pacific wanes, d budget will no longer be there even if his disciples remain in pldt etc.

its d likes of romero that will take over when it happens.

Yes, that would be the best scenario. SBP planted the seeds of gilas and they are worthy of reaping the benefits. But them exclusively handling SBP, had cause so much struggle in our basketball landscape. It would have been better if Gilas would be handled by a neutral org apart from SMC and MVP.

The MVP group had used their marketing budget to finance Gilas. It wasnt really just a good deed for them. They been reaping all the good reps all these time. As a governing body, it would been best that they include everyone in it so that everyone supports the national cause. Unfortunately, they been pirating players from those who lend players in both senior and youth NTs.

They lost their moral ascendancy to govern a suppose neutral body. I am hoping for a change in management soon.

The most realistic neutrality as regards to NT is the SBP creating a LARGE pool of players for the NT from the UAAP/NCAA, and the illegalization of the "anti draft dodging"

This is why I'm hoping the next local pro league will be more anti PBA,a flexible season,a more balance teams, willing to let players play overseas with a buyout of their contract and can comeback anytime. The PBA is way over its head thinking that they're some kind of a tyrant entity that can dictate.

For Asia cup

I think it's thirdy, Matt and Suerte

But I'd like Lopez to be their in lieu of Geo.. I think that provides us a active body and versatility.
With multiple games, energy level is important. And Lopez has it

if lopez will replace geo, and assuming matt will replace one between sj and rj, and rey is in for mike nieto, whom from among d OQT 12 would thirdy replace then?

Mike , (yes may be a big move), but I feel as 2023 is the goal, and we have limited time with those not in special draft or currently Ateneo UAAP. For the Asia cup I would like to give those who we have limited borrowed time as much exposure to Tab and FIBA. It's also between RJ and SJ, I would have Matt if healthy replace SJ.

Also by adding Thridy, it relieves the pressure from Dwight to play some SG , and he can help quarterback more

Oops in this scenario no.more suerte. Originally I had Suerte for Geo.. but with thirdy and Matt added, I feel another SG is redundant..so just me get an active body like Lopez, also in the context of the weaker Asian teams , Lopez can help inside..

Of course this is just my preference alone
