Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Call me crazy, but I think I can see shades of LA Tenorio in SJ Belangel. Decisive playmaker, knows what he's going to do, although he started out as a scorer, and he puts forth effort on defense.

LA's game is a good template for our sub-six footer guards, as far as increasing one's stock (and usefulness) in the international game is concerned. As for SJ, he just needs to have the deadly three-point accuracy when given daylight to shoot that LA has, and he's all set. He'll be a great asset to have for his Korean pro club and Gilas.

Good thing I lost my bet that we’ll lose by 20, we only lost by 17. Its another “learning experience” against a way younger than us NZ team. Man our bigs should really hit the gym on a consistent basis and add some strength and muscle. They get pushed around and overpowered a lot.

“Tune up game for Japan game”

College BBall is another problem. I wish our young ones just explore outside when they turn 20. College here hold them hostage until they turn 25 and by then no more development waiting to happen.

I think players might also be tempted to stay in college because there's the chance that they might not be given opportunities and playing time once they reach the pros, since vets are favored, especially in contenders. So might as well maximize the earning and PT.

true, some of these college stars earn more money in the college ranks than entering the PBA early, plus we've seen a lot of college stars (Teng, Javilonar, Taganas, Aljamal to name a few) who lasted less than 5 yrs in the league. So might as well maximize their earning potential.

LOL. correct. PBA have 31 year old rookies. UAAP and NCAA have 26? 27? year old college players? Youngest PBA rookie is 24? LOL. At 24, European, US, Australian, even Japanese, Korean and Chinese basketball players are seasoned professionals.

Well we got 24 year olds winning ROYs in our collegiate leagues. By the time they enter the PBA most players from world class leagues are probably on their second contract already.

The solution really is Filbasket or NBL lower the age of players coming in,say like 21,more than likely the PBA will follow.

Them PH College BBall players must be Med Students, the take atleast 8 years to finish college.

Student Athletes probably enroll only 12 units per semester just to delay/extend their stay. And I thought the maximum residency allowed for a bachelors degree is 7 years. Anyway some of the overextending athletes enroll in their univ's graduate program to extend their stay.

Hopefully, with things getting normal, that the 27 year old limit for college students will be eliminated.

lol, Giannis won the NBA MVP when he was 26 years old, Luka and Tatum has numerous All NBA citations and other awards and they haven't reached 25.

They take masters, then phds so all of them have Dr title when they graduate.

I can only think of Chris Tiu and Paolo Bugia as former PBA players who got their graduate degrees, cant recall or even think if there are former college basketball players who became lawyers, MDs or PhDs (Pacquiao's Doctor of Humanities doesnt count).

edit: Adornado's son, who was always the last player cut for Ateneo team A eventually pursued a med degree at UST and became a MD, Joel Villanueva earned a graduate degree from Harvard

congrats to queens of AFF. Philippine Malditas..

happy for the girls.. they need this as stajcic mentioned they need to feel being a winner and they won the chip and knows the feeling now..

Yeah, they spent years for this. They fully deserve it.

That'a what you get when you grow a core and keep it over a long period.

this is a perfect example of working success in silence..

If only Gilas Men thought and worked like our women's football team. Grow the players, start them young, keep a core, keep the program's continuity, instill a winning mentality and system.

this is actually the original intent of Gilas 1 as envisioned by Eala, but PBA had to mess it up

That team was nice, reaching 4th. Gabe and RDO were part of that team too, at least there was some continuity between 2011 and 2013.

SBP repeating the same shit.

Yet for SBP & some Pinoy fans, the Gilas-1 program was a failure because the goal was to at least get a medal & it failed. And these people didn't realize that in the 2007 & 2009 editions of FIBA Asia Championships, we finished 9th & 8th places respectively.

Talking about "You succeed if you succeed, you fail if you fail, there's no in between" mentality which is a flawed one. Most of us just don't have patience.

Gilas recent history vs world teams (not including Tab's 2021 OQT)

2019 World cup (5 games) avg losing margin - 30 pts
3 games vs NZ. - avg losing margin close to 30 pts .

I'm really sorry you can give every excuse in the world , but the reality is the Serbian Head coach is spot on - Philippine basketball is low quality, we simply do not belong at the world stage to be honest. .
The exception is if you perform like the 2021 OQT team.
The sample size is big enough (10 games since 2019, we should know by now what works and what doesn't, unless this simple realization is accepted expect the same old mistakes..

It goes without saying we cannot rely on talent, as we really do not have many good quality world level players ( malayo talaga ) , unless you realize this and arrive with the conclusion that it's only via superior teamwork that you can upset superior talented world teams, then wala. Contrary to what people think this will not be addressed by adding the same old 2nd tier level talent , (hugot ), that's fools gold,

Teamwork and defense, that's how we can compete.

So why would SBP hire a coach that puts little emphasis on defense, and has had a reputation for using his talent as crutches on offense (although to be fair, he's trying to implement Nenad's system on offense this Asia Cup)?

Is it too late to go back to Tab's program? Also, why are SBP higher-ups not listening to their boss, MVP, regarding Gilas? With Nenad assigned to help San Beda and Meralco as a consultant, it seems like MVP can easily reinstate these two together to gilas. With the WC close, SBP should really go to their senses and don't allow Chot's or their plan of 3 months with PBA players because it is not enough to be successful in the world stage. I hope after AC, they will really stop this nonsense and do what's best for the country.

That program should never have been dismantled to negin with. In fact, I'd argue that it should have started earlier, while Gabe and Castro were still on the team. Could have provided some leadership to younger players (at the time) like Kiefer or Parks.

Anyways, I digress. If the plan is to include PBA players, they have to be integrated into the team, starting from the windows. If the PBA players who played in the windows are set aside in favor of the favorites, well, screw it.

The long term pool is being integrated here and then by pba players but the core of the team is the 2021 team plus clarkson.. any plugins will be done as upgrade would come from pba (but it would be few) as the Ravenas and Parks arent part of the 2021 team (Thirdy was in Abdullah Cup and had his struggles at first)

He had it in high school/early in college. Don't know why he lost it last UAAP season.
