Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Olympic Charter encompasses olympics, di kasi tayu nakakasali sa Olympics kasi ehehe:cool:

I doubt this one. If it is then Nigeria could have fielded Dinwiddie and Okafor, both have Nigerian bloods (Ala Standhardinger’s case). But because of Fiba rule, they chose only one which is Okafor

Chot/SBP just need a super scorer (Clarkson as local) and a dominant NP Big Man and Gilas is to go for the 2023 WC. The 2 players will make up for the non-existent plays and mediocre (not suited for FIBA) team mates.

I fear that the mediocre teammates who are not suited for FIBA might comprise some of the rotation.

They better hope that it's enough to qualify for the 2024 Olympics.

I think SBP should apply for Brandon Ganuelas Rosser for an exemption this early to be a local player as his brother Mattew was part of the past national teams, it should be logical.

I dont think exemption is an easy thing. If we go by the Greg Slaugther route he was here when he was 17 or 18 and filed an exemption like 7 or so years laters. How long has BGR been here? 1 year? He is already 28. Mike Phillips is the best candidate IMO if he develops. Though the guy is more a mobile forward than a bruiser.

Let's not forget that we did not perform well on a Clarkson-led Asian games.

Not that I'm saying he is not talented but he might not the right one for the team

Well, familiarity was a huge problem for Clarkson & the team back then. Remember that Clarkson joined the team when the Asian Games basketball competition had already started. Clarkson had a very very limited practice with the team. I say its going to be very different if Clarkson spends around 2 months with Gilas training. Malaking deperensya yun.

is that realistic though, JC would spend 2 months in PH to practice with Gilas?

It would take a whole offseason for that. How did this team lose its discipline in rotations they did against SoKor last year?

The discipline on defense was most probably due to Tab's influence. Having him taken out of the team in lieu of Chot/Nenad (both coaches focus on offense) is probably the cause of this. Add to that the absence of Tab disciples like the Nieto brothers, Go, and Kouame who are not only stalwarts on offense but they also call the defensive schemes whenever they were on the floor with the non-ADMU guys.

Well, most of our sports program are doing stop gap solutions... Even the hype Filipina football team just doing shortcut by recruiting players overseas than develop homegrowns...

Because most of our sports institutions suck? They just see sports as an avenue for business first, then the country's/Pinoys' best interests in the world stage second.

I think Iran basketball is now on the decline. Though Hadadi still plays, I think he is going to retire soon, or if not, his effectiveness is going to diminish. I've seen Iran's decline in the last 3 years or so. The Iranians could no longer excel in Asian basketball as much as it did in the late 2000's to mid-2010's. Iran could only beat Syria yesterday by only 13 pts. And that's an Iran team with Hadadi, Jamshidi, Yakhchali, Kazemi. Syria on the other hand played without its naturalized player. About 4 years ago, Iran would easily massacre Syria by 30+ point margin.

I think Lebanese basketball is on the rebound right now. The Lebanese are out to regain their reputation as among Asia's powerhouse teams like what they were in the 2000's. They have lots of promising young players led by 6-foot-8 forward Yousef Khayat. Lebanon has pretty good young & promising wings & guards in its arsenal. At present, I'm more impressed with Lebanese basketball than Jordan basketball. Jordan doesn't have as much depth as Lebanon in terms of talent pool. Jordan also have a number of aging players.

You have to have the right horses. Tab focused on players with length and decent laterals. Secondly, its the principle I guess. You only have finite energy. If you spend a lot of energy on offense you have less on defense. Im not taking away anything from the team. They did their best with what they have. But I dont think Chots fast pace will bring us victories. I think the key is a slower pace with Ange as the defensive anchor with several long mobile forwards and guards. Chot lost to NZ team C by a lot with Ange, Ramos and Navarro. He had good defenders. His system just doesnt maximize them.

In the youth level, we barely have problems with Middle Eastern teams, showing that we have more players in the pipeline.

However, that pipeline has to translate to the seniors. We did well in our heyday against Jordan, Lebanon, and even beat Iran once. But now, wins are few and far between in general.

You need an offense designed to have our players expend as little energy as possible, so that it can be possible for our defenders to expend energy on rotations. If we run, it should be more opportunistic.

Yeah, Chot had good defenders in the loss to NZ. Ange, Dwight, Navarro, and Thirdy. Man, can't maximize them. He needs a defensive coordinator for that, like Tab and Black were in 2013-14.

Makes me wonder if Chot acknowledges to himself that he is a poor defensive coach?

Maybe he is too proud & arrogant to acknowledge that.

He's still basking in 2013.

Just look at how he reacts when people talk about his loses, full of excuses. Meanwhile, Tab didn't find an excuse when he lost to Serbian and got massacred by the DR in the OQT

Choke Reyes wakes up each day thinking he just beat Korea the previous day. He relives 2013 over and over.

2013 and 2014 WC got to his head.

He still thinks the same strategy will work almost a decade later.

Chot is an okay coach if you just want to qualify for the WC. He is NOT the guy who can handle world-level teams.

I hope they make an effort to push for this, B.Rosser seems like a matured version of Carl Tamayo.
legit 6'7 strong & aggressive, fit for a 4-player for gilas.
